I was in Hayti and Caruthersville for work and so I asked a local where they recommended for lunch and ended at Chubby's. And no wonder! It was delicious! They have a good variety for a lunch menu with plates and sandwiches available. I ordered the pork plate with sides of beans and cajun fries. They have their own Chubby's sauce on the table so you can add as much or little as you'd like. If you are driving 55 between STL and Memphis, Chubby's is a great pit stop for BBQ. This place may not look like much on the outside. Don't fool yourself theres some great food waiting on the inside. I ended up ordering and taking home a second meal. For the review i really wanted to try the ribs i mean come on its a barbecue restaurant right? However, i wanted chicken. Some I compromised and got both. The potato salad was excellent and the onion rings are to die for. Now i drive cross country and get to experience food on a different level and this place was in my opinion high on the mark. The sauce was a little sharp for my liking but edible maybe my suggestion would be to have it on the side when you order. However, it was good don't get me wrong theres a hundred sauce profiles this was one i like and is tasty just not a favorite profile wise. The inside was extremity clean and waitress and staff was more then helpful with my order and smiled the whole time. This place is right off the main highway and there are several signs to lead you there including at least one billboard. I went through the drive up. It took a long time. At least 15 min or so but probably because food is made to order. I got brisket sandwich. Its a hamburger bun with the brisket. It didn't have much smoke flavor and had a "pot roast" texture. It had a lot of fat which made it really greasy. It was a good portion/size and very hot & fresh but basically flavorless. No BBQ sauce, no pickles, onions , nothing. I'm really picky because I grew up with Texas BBQ which of course is the best! so this place just didn't cut it for me. The potato salad was mustard potato salad and was ok. Maybe there are sauces or more options if you eat in. The woman who took the order at the window was friendly. I was disappointed though. read more

I decided to try something different on this leg of my trip. Instead of staying in Sikeston and going to Lambert's, I stayed a little further south in Hayti. My first choice (Patty's) was closed on this Saturday night. So I went back to Yelp for another choice. Chubby's fit the bill (more than two stars helped). Chubby's is a typical BBQ shack, with local and pig memorabilia everywhere. The food surprised me - it was awesome! Chubby's uses a vinegar-based sauce, so it is tangy. IMHO, good BBQ (just as a good steak) doesn't need any sauce. They were out of my first choice, brisket. But they redeemed themselves with the ribs. A half-slab of baby backs came out with two sides (I chose potato salad and cole slaw) and a huge slab of bread. Smokey and meaty, the ribs were solid, but as soon as I touched them, the bone separated from the meat. These were good ribs. The sides were very good too. I found the cole slaw different from what I'm used to also. They use a vinegar-based sauce for this as well, and add thinly sliced green peppers. Yum. The potato salad had the typical mustard-mayo mix, and was very similar to what my mom makes. Needless to say, I couldn't finish it all and left stuffed. Chubby's is a great option to Lambert's and their long lines. If you like BBQ, Chubby's is the place to check out in this part of Missouri. read more

Excuse my French, but this place sucks...the worst bbq place I've ever been to, and one of the worst restaurants ever... the brisket was nothing but fat....I mentioned it to the waitress and she offered me ribs instead at no charge...well the ribs had a weird odd smell to them and were very dry...it was like they had been microwaved or something.. usually dry meat doesn't bother me too much but this was too much.. also, I am a big fan of vinegar based bbq and vinegar in general but it was all I could taste in their sauces...I tried the regular bbq sauce and the hot bbq sauce.. also, the Cole slaw was so loaded with vinegar I couldn't even finish it... the only things I was able to eat and finish were the baked beans and potato salad...Both of which were very average (think canned beans and grocery store potato salad)....even the bread was horrible ! Lol...it was just a thicker piece of white bread not even toasted with nothing on it ! I paid $18 for potato salad and baked beans...they are charging premium prices for way lower cuts of meat....this place should do society a favor and shut down...the pic I posted of all the food is what was left over at the end of my meal. read more

Walk into Chubby's and pigs of all sorts will stare at you from each and every corner. Picture a kitchen of a Grandma whom is obsessed with pigs. Creepy or cute? The verdict is still out. Figurines of pigs. Posters of pigs. Stuffed animal pigs. Is this a fat joke? Plus, their slogan is "Pig Out at Chubby's". Cue the Twilight Zone music as you go in for a pulled pork. As we guzzled down our over-sized sweet teas, we began with the Fried Pickle Spears. Thick cut spears of pickles were breaded and then fried. Think mozzarella stick breading, with Italian spices, because that's exactly what it tasted like. They were served with marinara sauce on the side, which was kind of odd, but that didn't stop me from eating each and every one of my share. I chose to order the Regular BBQ Sandwich, with the cabbage on the side. I'm scared to know what the Jumbo BBQ Sandwich looked like. I was happy that my pork hadn't been drown in sauce so that I could add more at my own discretion with the sauces provided on the table. Don't want to waste time sitting down for dinner? If you're feeling lazy, like most of us fat American's are, you may take advantage of the drive-thru. So if you want to get a little chubby on your road trip, then pull on off the highway for Chubby's BBQ, where piggies of all kinds fit in. read more

After reading the reviews, we decided to try this joint and to be honest, I'm wondering if we went to the right place?! Everyone's taste buds are different so having said that, if you like dry, overcooked meats with a strong vinegar sauce, then this place is for you. We ordered the Killer Combo and the chicken was overcooked and dry, the ribs were dry, only got 2 strips of brisket (Thank God because they were so fatty). No hint of BBQ flavour whatsoever. Maybe we caught them on an off day but everything we ordered was just dark and tasteless...well, except for the vinegar flavour! Sorry, this was the worst $36 we every spent... Stopped for lunch while driving back home from Memphis. It had mostly good reviews and one claimed it was the only Zagat 4 star bbq in the US. The bad reviews all seemed to focus on their sauce, saying it isn't sweet enough. Yep, we said, that's for us. I've always thought that Coke should go in a glass, but I want my meat to taste like meat. The place is small, basic, a bit run down and dirty, just what one might expect in a barbecue joint located in the middle of nowhere. We arrived about noon and it took a while to find a seat as the place was packed and is fairly small. But, in the time it took the three of us to go to the bathrooms (small bathrooms, so one at a time, meaning it took maybe ten minutes for all of us to get in and out) we found a table.Table was set with silverware rolled in napkins, a big roll of paper towels, salt and pepper, and an array of sauces including their own bbq sauce, which is a delicious, herby and spicy vinegar based sauce that is very light, cuts through the fat instead hiding it, and isn't so strong as to overpower the meat flavors. Between us we had brisket, chicken, and ribs. We also had cole slaw, potato salad, baked beans, and fries as sides. All also had unsweetened ice tea-- served ice cold in what must be a 32oz cup. Everyone liked everything that was on the table. The brisket was especially good. Chubby's smokes meats with a rub and lets you add sauce. I recommend their house sauce noted above. It can be hot or regular. Hot is not too hot, but regular actually was more to my liking as it had more herb flavors coming through. The brisket had nice smoke rings and a slightly crispy edge but remained a bit pink in the center. The chicken came with dark, dark reddish brown skin but was still nicely moist inside. It was a bit greasy as chicken will tend to be, but it wasn't bad, and the vinegar based sauce paired nicely with it. The other sauces-- I don't recall the labels, but all were the kind you can buy at any grocery-- were all too hot and killed the flavor of the chicken. It took a while, but our light eater managed to eat the whole thing and pronounced it most delicious. The ribs too were said to be very good. I didn't personally sample this dish, but I'll report that the serving was large, the ribs were smoked and very tender with meat separating nicely from the bone, and were thoroughly enjoyed by the barbecue fanatic that ordered them. He barbecues two or three times a week all summer long, and he barbecues almost everything from bread (well, bread gets smoked more often), meats of all kinds, greens, potatoes, anything. He doesn't care for any of our local (Champaign-Urbana) barbecue with the exception of Black Dog, but he liked this. (Sorry Black Dog... I still love you...) The sides all were good, although I only tasted the cole slaw. My wife pronounced the potato salad the best she'd had since her mother's cole slaw. Our companion said the beans were tasty, spicier and tangier than expected, but delicious. And the fries were fine-- thick and perfectly done, but not that unusual. I really enjoyed the Cole Slaw. It is an oil and vinegar cole slaw with some peppers and seasonings. The peppers were small and not overwhelming; I am not sure, but I think they might have been jalapenos. The oil didn't taste like olive oil, but it was very good and in just right proportions-- neither vinegary nor oily. (I'm kind of guessing, but it might have been a high quality, first press canola oil. It had that slight buttery flavor that first press canola has. Anyway, it was good.) The service was slow at first, and it took a few minutes after we seated ourselves before they noticed we were there. I'm told this style is common in Eastern North Carolina-- lots of smoke and vinegar sauce added after, not during cooking.Whether or not that is true, it is the best commercially prepared barbecue I've ever tasted. When we travel, if we've been to the town before we usually don't go to the places we've already been at-- whether attractions or restaurants. But we'll make an exception if ever we pass through Hayti, Missouri again. This was great food. Don't let the ramshackle appearance of the building fool you. All in all, we loved our visit here. I know bbq is somewhat personal... but what isn't. So, if you are a fan of really sweet sauces, this is not your place. If you like meats slow-cooked in a tomato or ketchup sauce, this is not your place. This was the first time I've eaten at a bbq joint that had the vinegar sauce, and I loved it. I've had it a few times at people's homes-- people who make their own sauce-- and this was far superior (said with apologies to my friends). read more

I'm from TX, so I'm used to pretty good BBQ. Everyone is always raving about Mizzou BBQ, so I thought I'd give it a try while driving through on the way to a project in Illinois. I crossed over into Mizzou from Arkansas, and saw the sign for" the best ribs in town". Not even if they were the only ribs in town, but I digress. My 1st clue of the impending disappointment was that it's 2:00 pm on Saturday, and there's only 1 car in the parking lot. For reference, people start lining up at 0800 on Saturday to await Franklin's 1030 opening. Anyway, I walked in and ordered a side of ribs. Its called a rack where I come from, but come to find out, improper vernacular was the least of my worries. After placing my order,, the very nice young lady said "that'll be $26 and change ". Mind you, I ordered just ribs; no drink, no sides, and apparently no moisture. A little pricey, but I thought, these must be some great ribs. I paid, thanked the young lady, and jumped back in my truck to continue my trip. Looking forward to smashing some swine once I got settled and back on cruise control, I set them in the seat beside me and got back up to speed on 55 N. Once I was away from traffic and able to keep it between the lines with a little help from my left knee, I opened the box to see what $26 got you in Missouri. When I saw what was in the box, disappointed doesn't even come close to describing how I felt. I actually felt like I had been cheated. I guess I could have taken them back, but I don't think they are aware of how far off the mark they truly are. I feel kinda sorry for them. The owner was standing right there when I asked them to slice them, since will eat them on the road. He actually let them serve me that garbage. I've had beef jerky and biltong juicier than those ribs. You literally could not tell if you were chewing on meat or bone. Pathetic. The fact that they have the audacity to charge $26 for that garbage is remarkable. If that is what passes for "the best ribs in town " in Missouri, you guys are sadly mistaken.
