Always what I want and require, and expert tips and advice on how to keep my hair healthy as I do swim alot and the chlorine does attack my hair. 9 times out of 10 it's Blane who cuts my hair, who is always exceptional! But even on the odd occasion it is someone else they have been really great. Would recommend making a reservation, as although they do accept walk ins, they do book up fast! Got my hair cut and colored by Kelly and I am soooo happy with the results. This place is so underrated. I've now gotten my hair cut and colored by three different stylists (Courtney, Lisa, and Kelly), and have always been super happy with their service and talent. They are right down the street from me and I can always either call an hour ahead or just walk in. They're also super affordable ($30 for cut, $175 for color). The only thing that makes me sad is I feel like I fall in love with one of them and then they leave (Courtney moved and Lisa went to another salon). So hopefully Kelly stays so I have a go-to!!! read more

Victor was very rude by getting directly in my face (no mask) and loudly told me I was not welcomed in the salon for services because I was comparing each stylist's techniques which made [them] feel inadequate in their expertise. (The front desk receptionist, Jackson, & both in-chair clients present were taken back by Victor's behaviour.) It's the first time I've changed stylist in 10 years. I went in to have a chat with each stylist (Jackson & Victor) regarding preferences in techniques, texture, & style. I was doing my due diligence to make sure it would be a win-win for both stylist and me. My hair is not an experiment. With long hair, once it's cut, I'm stuck with it for a while. Let's make sure stylist and client are on the same page before getting scissor happy. The may have fine reviews and are recommended, but it's a bad sign if a stylist doesn't understand the clients needs and or refuses to hear a client out. read more

Damn, Blane is the person to go to if you are in need of a fantastic haircut! I have had a run of bad luck with hair stylists for a while. I went to Blane the other day because I decided to go back to my mo-hawk which I haven't had in years. Blane was able to envision exactly what I was hoping for, communicated beautifully during the cut to ensure all needs were met and did not torture me with idle chatter. Vegas cuts my hair I am never been disappointed. I tell all my friends this place is great and no need to pay for an expensive salon, they do great work. On the down side Matthew is inappropriate and abrasive, when he is there, there's a palatable tension rather than the usual happy lighthearted atmosphere, I go in the evenings after work. read more

I called on my way and they had an appointment time in 40 minutes. Parking isn't fun for that part of cap hill but I still managed to find a spot 3 blocks away that was free. (Middle of the day on a Tuesday) I forgot the name of the guy who cut my hair but he performs in the drag show at Julia's! He did a great job and spent a lot of time making sure my hair looked great. The salon is lacking on ambiance, and the chair is was in tilted to one side. He said they were waiting for new chairs to be installed though. They also didn't wash my hair. But hey the haircuts are cheap! In the end for only $34 I got a great cut, better than more expensive places have done in the past. I will be back! read more

Jackson is the best! He is quite good at this art, and pays a lot of attention to detail. He remembers things quite well, about stuff that we've tried with my hair and style, as well as conversations that we've had in the past. The cool thing about Hardware Salon is that they are open until late at night, and they don't charge a bomb. I've called in for an appointment after work a few times. Jackson isn't there all days of the week, its better to call in early for a session with him. The other stylists are pretty good as well, I've tried them a couple of times. read more

Scheduled a walk-in for the first time and was very happy with the service and haircut I received from Blane. I have about 3-4" hair and he was able to give me the perfect scissor cut to clean me up. Spent close to 1.5 hours here, paid $50 for a haircut which I am very disappointed with. With very voluminous and curly hair, it has always been either a great haircut or a disaster haircut for me. I read several reviews before I got there, but it didn't turn out well for me. It has now left me with way MORE frizz in my hair than before and its even more difficult to handle them now. Tl;dr bad cut and worst service. I showed up on time and they were running a bit late, so they said to leave (social distancing) and they would give me a call when they were ready. No call came, and when I came back they had started giving someone else a haircut. No biggie mistakes happen, I wasn't in a rush so I waited another hour. When they were finally ready it was almost closing time so I got a lousy rushed cut that wasn't at all what I asked for. The stylist ended the cut early cause it was closing time, and when I called later to have my haircut finished they said I'd need to pay another $40 since it was "a separate haircut". Lousy cut, worst service. I only went because every other barber had a wait list of at least a week and I was overdue for a cut, I guess now I know why nobody wanted to go here... next time I'll wait the extra week and go to Rudy's. read more

I usually hate going to get my hair cut because the people who do it are either too intimidated to make suggestions or too pigheaded to listen to my preferences. Not so with Vegas. Vegas was my hair dresser and I have to say I was VERY impressed by her attitude and her willingness to give me exactly what I wanted + a little more. When I sat down, I knew I wanted at least an inch off and some layers. I told her this and she immediately started brain storming with me to help me get the look I wanted. Did I want to go shorter than my chin? No. Did I want bangs? I dunno...maybe. Did I put a lot of work into my hair in the morning? HAH! No. She took all this information in and gave me exactly what I wanted. After the cut, she showed me which products she was using, explained very clearly what each one did, and gave me the price range for each product. Then, when she started styling my hair, she told me exactly what she was doing and how she was doing it, so I could replicate the look at home. Throughout it all she was polite, patient and very understanding. If you want a decently priced hair cut from a wonderful hair stylist, ask for Vegas at this salon. read more

Great with one caveat. Went to Matthew with five inches of hair, and after telling him that I just wanted a little trim to look professional, I left looking like Justin Beiber. NOT what I was looking for. He also smelled strongly of cigarette smoke and was a bit overconfident given the results. Went back the next day, and Vegas, bless her soul, saw me first thing to even things out and allow me to go to work without looking like a total idiot. I have had haircuts from three different stylists at Hardware. Vegas cut my fair a few times and I thought she did a really good job and she had great interpersonal skills. I felt very confident in her abilities. The 4th time I had gone back I had a cut from one of the staffers which I was not very happy with. The next day I called and got another staffer, Jessica. She went over and beyond to correct the cut, for free of course. She stayed past her normal work schedule to fix it for me and offered a complimentary product as a token of goodwill. Ever since then I have continued to go into Hardware and asked for Jessica. I have special needs due to having scarring and some cosmetic tattoo work. While this can present a challenge for stylists, Jessica always comes through with providing a stellar look. She is highly attentive, anticipates my needs, and has great style. read more

I was taking a leisurely stroll down Broadway about three years ago and stumbled upon Hardware Salon. In desperate need of a haircut but fearful of another stylist who was "confident" in cutting Asian hair I took a chance and walked in. Out came Jessica, who, unbeknownst to me was going to be an integral part of my hair and life for the next three years. I cautiously asked, "Do you know how to cut Asian hair?" and received a definite, "yes". What happened after that is really just history, a history of fantastic and reliable haircuts, catching up on gossip, and many many friend referrals who are now loyal to the talented hands belonging to my girl Jessica. Jessica understands my hair, how it works, and how to make me look exactly how I've wanted but never knew I could look. I live in Portland now and don't always get the chance to get my haircut by Jessica, which sucks because we usually catch up on all the happenings of our lives. But I do make a conscious effort to visit Seattle, mostly to see friends but to also get my haircut by Jessica (who is amongst those friends). She is THAT good, seriously. read more

I can't say the same for all the stylists here, but the stylist I had seemed to have zero knowledge of how to work with curly/wavy hair textures. He started my cut by brushing through my hair, starting at the top and literally breaking my hair and tugging at my scalp as he went to the bottom. I asked why he was breaking it and he said he had clients earlier in the day who told him to not be so gentle. I didnt say anything then, but i was thinking "wtf that was an entirely different person who was insisting you damage their hair, my hair is wavy/curly and coloured so it needs to be treated nicer". Instead I politely told him that hair that is my texture needs to be combed starting at the bottom to work through tangles that form easier. He was a little gentler, but didnt really seem to take my advice to heart. When he got to the cut, he didnt really ask me for much direction other than how much I wanted off. I mentioned I wanted more layers, but he didnt ask how long/thick I wanted my layers. Instead, he told me that my bangs came into the rest of my hair too bluntly, so he was going to add layers to help that. These layers are only slightly longer than my bangs and extremely thinned out compared to the rest of my thick hair. He didnt really add much more in the way of layers to help make these short ones less noticeable. The result has a weird texture and doesn't translate well to my hair that can be anywhere from wavy to curly depending on humidity. Speaking of texture, not only is the top much too light compared to the body and back of my hair, but the sides feel and look uneven compared to eachother. The length seems uneven too. Overall pretty displeased I called to let them know about all this and was offered an appointment to fix it with another stylist. I ended up not wanting to go in after being disappointed so greatly the first go around. Its unfortunate. I liked the location and the salon itself, I just wish they would be more curly friendly. read more
