We sat outside and enjoyed the scenery. It is a beautiful location right next to the River District. There's a lovely park, splash pad, and playground right along the Dan River. We were so stoked to eat right there. The interior of the restaurant was so fun. We loved the decorations. Books everywhere! The server was ok at first. But when we were done, I did not like how she presented me the check. She just quickly flashed me an amount on a screen, and then hid the screen. I asked if I could pay cash and she accepted it but did not bring me a check even then. We ordered 3 burgers that sounded really good. Such a disappointment. The burger meat in each was shaped perfectly and was as hard as a hockey puck. They appeared to be cooked medium but the meat was tough and gristly. I have no idea how they got all the burgers the exact, uniform hockey puck shape. They must be like those frozen ones you can get at Costco. But $17.95 for a frozen hockey puck? At one point, while my kids were telling me how gross the patties were, while my husband and I told them they had to eat them to go play on the playground, I flagged the server down and asked what type of meat it was. She said beef. However, it did not taste like beef. Thank goodness for all the toppings because if they were plain burgers, they would have been inedible. We were so hungry though so we ate what we could. Notably, the buns also tasted cheap like they had just come out of a stale grocery store deli bag. The seasoned fries, sweet potato fries, the homemade ranch and ketchup, and salad with homemade vinaigrette were ok. After we left, I added up what we ordered again and realized she must have charged me an extra $12 to swap out a veggie patty for a beef patty. I was not told there would be an upcharge so felt a little swindled, especially with how she presented the check. I wish I had kept the veggie patty though, because it probably would have been better. Also my kid who had said the burgers were so gross puked right after we left and immediately felt much better and enjoyed 2 hours on the playground. My other kid was jealous of the other one puking. Like you can't make this kind of stuff up. This spot has so much potential. I would honestly hope to visit again just to chill outside but would not ever eat the burgers.

She was busy holding down the fort-taking orders and cooking too. I later learned that it was a family run business. I ordered the "spicey meatloaf" with 2 sides (there were a lot of side options to choose from). My two sides were fried okra and stuffing. She ordered the chopped bar-b-que pork with coleslaw and mac 'n cheese. We sampled each other's food with the satisfied expression of closed eyes and a 'MMMM" while eating. Everything was DEE-liscious! Wonderfully seasoned, great portions and perfectly cooked. It's one of those times when I wished that I had a bigger belly or a clone, so that I could try more food!...or pick up and move to Yanceyville NC! Other patrons asked a lot of questions about the other menu items. That's when I learned about their "black cornbread". The owner said it was her father's recipe. It uses black cornmeal and other spices. We took ours to go and later (really) enjoyed it back at our hotel. The owner/cook also gave us a sample of her chicken salad. It was so so good, seasoned wonderfully...more reason to be fatter to be able to eat more!! I would recommend anything and everything there, because I'm sure it's cooked right and with love! Thanks Briggs for helping me appreciate wonderful southern/BBQ food!

When I walked in…read morethe door I was expecting your typical NC BBQ joint, but was surprised to find it's a Jamaican restaurant now. It looks like the restaurant recently changed hands and the new ownership is taking it in a new direction. Consequently the menu is a mashup of the old menu and Jamaican dishes. I was very pleasantly surprised with my curry chicken served with rice and cabbage. It was a typical Jamaican yellow curry with bone-in chicken and potatoes. The curry was very flavorful, but not spicy. In hindsight, I should have asked if they had some Jamaican scotch-bonnet hot sauce to spice things up a bit. The cabbage, cooked with ham hocks or something similar was fantastic; it was the best cabbage I've had in a long time. All in all, my meal was excellent. My wife tried the BBQ. The fries were cooked to order, the slaw was creamy, but the BBQ was a disappointment. I tried a bite and it reminded me of the sort of pork BBQ that you can buy in the grocery store. It was a definite meh, at best. My curry chicken was definitely a 4-star meal, while the BBQ rates 2-stars, so everything averages out to 3 stars. That said, I suspect that if you stick with the Jamaican menu, you're likely to get a 4-star or better meal. One last thing: If you pay with a credit card, they hit you up with a 4% upcharge. Disappointing.

I'm writing this while back in Danville for my work travel specifically today Thursday, September 10. My girlfriend & I made more of a vacation out of this from Sunday, 9/6 to Sunday, 9/13. We spent one night at an old friend of mine in Raleigh, NC and got to her parent's Smith Mountain Lake house in Franklin County on Monday night. We drove through Danville on Monday evening. I wanted BBQ or southern, but it was Labor Day & some places were closed on Monday anyway. We drove by Ka Cafe, and they were closed. We didn't want to waste much time looking for another restaurant or drive that far as we were hungry. We saw River District had good reviews and just went with that. It's a huge brick building looked like an old industrial building in the past. I parallel parked behind someone else, but there were also plenty of spots in their parking lot. We were confused as we saw 2 entrances, but we followed another customer in. We asked the friendly host about the 2 entrances, and he said I'll show you. The left entrance we went in was by the standard bar area with a mix of high top tables, booths, & the bar itself. The right side had another bar with bar seating, bowling alley, & games. We chose the standard one as we figured the other side seemed like it could get hectic. I also asked him if they had any specialties like southern foods, and he said it's more of standard burgers, sandwiches, & wings. Although I had my heart set on southern food or BBQ, I settled as we were hungry and didn't want to waste more time. Our server was very nice and efficient. I saw that their specialties were starred on their menu. I asked her recommendations too. Per the stars, her recommendation, & my gut I went with the hot honey chicken sandwich fried and upgraded to sweet potato fries for $2 more. My girlfriend was craving a standard burger & got the standard fries. Wow, excellent hot honey chicken & sweet potato fries. The bun was nicely buttered for extra flavoring. I tried a bite of my g/f fries & she tried my sweet potato. We liked on own more. Likewise, a bite of her burger, which I could tell was good quality, but I liked my hot honey chicken more. And she thought mine was good but liked her burger more. She came around to check on us a few times, getting water refills. My girlfriend & I had a discussion of another restaurant we were just at 2 days earlier relatively close to home in Maryland. She said I bet she asks if we want dessert or need anything else before slapping the bill down, which the MD restaurant did. Server came around to ask if we needed anything else, which we said no. Then, she came back with the bill and went above & beyond asking if we wanted to go cups of water. Perhaps, we could tell we were travelers as we didn't have a southern accent and wanted to provide southern hospitality, which we don't really get back home in MD. Restaurant & restroom was also clean. Overall, this was an excellent choice as both host & server was friendly and great food!

Simple and classic. We both made a few tweaks. She skipped the onions, added ketchup and mustard, and got a side salad. I kept mine simple with no ketchup or mustard. Food came out fast. Appetizer and burgers hit the table in just over five minutes, which was impressive. The burgers were good. Not over the top, but juicy and worth the price. The only miss was the bun. It was cold and could have used a quick toast or at least some heat. The house salad was fresh with lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, cheese, and croutons. I tried to swap my fries for sweet potato fries and ended up getting both, so no complaints there. Just know the sweet potato fries count as extra. Fries came out hot and stayed hot. The sweet potato fries had a nice balance, not soggy, not too hard. The corn fritters were the standout. Crispy on the outside, soft and sweet inside. Service from Amber or Shannon was great. Attentive, friendly, and helpful. The only slowdown came at the end. It took longer to get the check than it did to receive the food. The space is in a reclaimed industrial building with exposed brick and high ceilings. Very large and open with plenty of room for groups and events. There is a main dining area, a busy bar, and a separate section with bowling lanes. The crowd was mixed. Families, couples, groups, people at the bar, even a few on laptops. Plenty of TVs and music, but it stays at a manageable level. Accessibility is decent with a lift available. Parking is nearby street or lot parking. Overall, a fun, casual place with strong value, especially on Tuesday nights. Must order: Corn fritters Heads up: Buns may come out cold and sweet potato fries are an extra

I ordered the Roast Beef Hoagie. My wife, a retired restaurant consultant and food critic chose what she expected would be far more simple...a bacon, and egg, sandwhich. My expectations were simply a good hoagie, such as : A classic roast beef hoagie typically contains thinly sliced roast beef and a combination of cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and onions on a long, fresh hoagie roll. Common condiments include mayonnaise, mustard, or horseradish sauce. We also ordered a side of french fries. After 20 minutes of looking wearily at a plethora of dangerous looking wiring McGievers, our food arrived. My wife had an adequately prepared sandwhich, the French Fries were hot and tasty My Hoagie, and this sadly is true, consisted of chopped up bologna on a sub sandwhich roll, nothing else . I stared at it while I ate the Fries. I do not eat processed meat, and did not endevour to taste for fear of chemical inbalance. I have seen that particular meat before. It was at the nearby Piggly Wiggly labeled Roast Beef Bologna. I actually like real Roast Beef, I realize my mistake was expecting an actual Roast Beef Hoagie

I heard there was a burger on the menu and it peaked my interest (see my other reviews). Waiting in line people were impatient because the orders weren't coming out fast enough and when they did they were incorrect. I should have walked away. Finally it was my turn. I ordered the 'Build Your Burger' cheddar, lettuce, tomato, onion, ketsup, mayo, and mustard. It was $10 and came with crinkle fries. She tried to charge me $12 which was the w/bacon price. It took about 10 minutes for it to come out. I flipped the box open to quickly make sure I got what I ordered before heading inside. I did. It was when I got inside and closer inspection revealed that there had been a hastily disguised massacre. The burger was burnt, cooked to death. Burnt hard distasteful char. It was as though it burned, stuck to the flat top and they broke the burger trying to scrape it off. There was literally a large chunk of the patty separated and they used the cheese to weld it back together and hide the evidence. It was a complete abortion with the exception of the fries which were just fries. I was sad.

Considering their website is not up and their facebook page has a few pictures and some bad reviews (from Saturday's event), I feel like these guys definitely deserve a second chance, but they were just unprepared for Saturday. I got to Sycamore Brewing right at 9:30am (when breakfast was supposed to start)... Sycamore was up and running, while the Food Truck didn't open it's window and start taking orders until after 10am. Not a great start (IMHO). If you say you are going to have breakfast at a certain time, I would definitely be on time... if not be earlier than expected. So the initial start of not being open created probably a rush of orders that the truck wasn't really ready for....Is my best guest so the truck was already in the weeds before even firing up the first order. I waited a while for the ordering line to go dwindle before getting up to place my order. Their menu was simple enough and had a choice of a breakfast burrito (choice of meats in the burrito), egg, cheese, roasted peppers... pretty standard. The other choice was a sandwich in between two pieces of Texas toast pretty much the same ingredients. The Sycamore FB page advertised pancake holes, but the day of the event they were advertised as donut holes.... with powdered sugar and syrup. They had side offerings of fruit and potatoes. So the menu seemed good enough... not really sure where the hold up was, but my order was taken (no payment was taken and not ticket system... just a verbal number given to me). It was super painful for the next 2 hrs as food slowly came out of the truck for the folks that basically ran up to the truck as soon as they opened.... yet it wasn't consistent since orders started coming out and people were not receiving their food in the order they were in line.... The numbering system was not at all helpful since it would give you false hope that you may be only a few away... but alas... we all quickly found out there was little to no way of systematically figuring out what food would come out next. I met a nice couple that were starving and just bailed (they gave the truck until they were done with two beers each).... since they didn't pay, I guess the transaction ended up okay, but then the truck would be preparing food for people that weren't there (while the people that stuck it out were still waiting). So now, I've had 5 drinks.... I also had run 5 miles before this so I was pretty buzzed and wondering where in the (INSERT EXPLETIVE) this burrito that I ordered over an hour ago was. Just an overall bad situation... it was like a train wreck were you see the crash coming, but all the doors and windows are barred up and you physically could not go anywhere else. In an effort to quell the dissension, I think the food truck owner (I am guessing) told everyone they will discount the food and apologized for the wait... so people dispersed from waiting beside the truck and went to the tables.... Then it became another show of this woman coming out with food and yelling numbers for people that may or may not have stuck around. When I finally did get my order, I wasn't charged (which was nice), but my burrito was supposed to have sausage in it, and instead I was greeted with bacon. Which isn't a big deal for me... I was just happy to get something, but I could see if someone had a food aversion or allergy, this could be an issue. I did feel for the lady since she gave out free waters and fruit to those that were still waiting for their orders..... I think I also saw her giving refunds to those that had paid as they ordered. Just overall an experience that literally left a bad taste in my mouth. I think I heard some patrons at the bar complaining to the Sycamore staff so it is doubtful this food-truck will do breakfast again... Some other folks that have done a Sycamore breakfast said the other trucks were pretty good ("these guys must be new"). I did manage to look at my watch after inhaling my burrito and seeing the time of 11:50... I was actually thinking about ordering from the other food truck that was serving lunch at Sycamore that day.
