The beef stew was pretty good, but had too many tomatoes to be a true beef stew. The broth was tomatoey rather than a rich dark beef gravy. I found the Shepherds Pie to be way too bland. Again, very little beef gravy and not enough peas for me. The menu said there were herbs on top. There were not. The place was not busy so food came out fast. Atmosphere is cute, staff were friendly, prices are reasonable.

It's a burger so I do not expect much, yet a little salt would go a long way. I have visited this establishment three times now. I visit here twice a year and there are not very many places to get a burger. The first time a couple of years ago, the burger was decent. Not good but not bad, definitely not as dry as it was today. The second time was pretty much like the first time. Not very good but I've had worse. You probably wonder why I would go back a third time. Good question but it wasn't my idea. Every establishment deserves at least a second chance, especially with this economy and the inability to attract and retain employees, but three times??!! Nope, it was only a basic cheeseburger and an epic fail.

The server was wonderful, especially considering she was cashier, server, and food runner. We waited over 30 minutes for our food - an omelet, sausage, and home fries and toast for one of us and 2 eggs over easy with bacon and homefries with biscuit for the other. When it arrived we got a runny egg omelet, hard burnt sausage, two well done eggs and biscuit was a bit dry. The potatoes and bacon were the only items that were good. Oh well, still on the hunt for a good diner I guess.

The other menu items like the fries and onion rings are good but it's the burger that is the star of the show here . The first time I tried Chargrill was at the original restaurant location in downtown Raleigh . Total retro vibes here as it appeared it never updated its drive in style , car hop , outdoor/car dining only . At the time you had to walk up to the order window and write down your order on a piece of paper and slip it thru the window . The location in Benson is modernized while still paying homage to its original Raleigh location with vintage photos and retro decor . The indoor dining is certainly appreciated on hot summer days. We saw this location and thought, perfect! I'm sorry to say from the get go, it wasn't the best experience. The young man at the register clearly wanted to be anywhere but there. He looked bored out of his mind and welcoming just wasn't in his wheelhouse. Our burgers were so overcooked they were borderline burnt. The fries were overcooked and nearly hard.
