I'm from Dunn and try to visit Hot Dog and Hamburger Haven every time I visit. The staff are friendly and the customer service is exceptional! Small town but HUGE on customer service and food! My favorite is the Bright Leaf hot dog, all the way minus onions! And I always get 3! I hope this place stays in business for a long time. This is a great local spot for a good burger and fries. The service is friendly but not the fastest service possible or anything, they use an older system and do offer a discount for paying in cash. The inside is snug and the line can get long and backed up at times, which just shows they're offering something good. It's an old diner style look inside, nothing fancy. We stopped with our 4 children on our way out of town at lunchtime. It was worth the wait! I had the grilled bologna sandwich with mustard and cheese, the kids had cheeseburgers and ny had a hotdog with cheese . The fries and onion rings were very good also. Great little gem! read more

$5 hot dog combo...bring it on! I got mine all the way, chili, mustard, and onion. The buns are steamed and they serve red hot dogs, haven't had one of those since living the NE! The chili was a bit weird, a little watery for my liking, but the flavor was good. The fries were fresh out of the fryer and were amazing. We didn't have to wait very long, although there is a sign stating it may take awhile if they are busy... There are a lot of "don't " signs, which really reminds me of my grandfather---- get off my lawn. I know that the prices are super reasonable and they are aware of how to cut costs, the signs are a bit in your face. "No sharing drinks" yes, I understand why that is important, however those that take advantage are taking the place of those that don't even have a full drink. "no cell phones at the counter", yes that is rude, however people should just have manners and that shouldn't even need to be posted. "To go orders only get so many packets of sauce", okay so just load up with the containers on the tables before you go, simple solution! "Extra fees" for just about everything. This makes me giggle a lot. There were about 50+ signs everywhere and each made me think of that grumpy old man that we all knew growing up! The prices reflect their cost consciousness and it is appreciated, as eating a full meal for $5 is amazing! This is an old school hamburger joint which you don't see very often in the modern world. The family got traditional burgers (and one chuckwagon). Pricing was good. The real problem is how long it took to get the food. We were traveling on 95 looking for quick stop, and it took 20 mins to get 4 burgers 2 fries and a couple waters. It felt like 40 mins. There were 5 people in the kitchen. It was baffling. I want to give it 2 stars from the wait, but its a step out of today into a slower moving community, so I want to buffer that. However if you are looking for gas, burger and keep moving, you cant afford this stop. read more

My grandma lives in Dunn and my wife enjoyed the hot dogs here so my mom and I bought food for my grandma and the two of us. We got my grandma the stewed beef plate with sautéed squash and mashed potatoes and while she liked the taste fine and I suppose it was a lot of food for eight dollars, there were probably two ounces of meat spread atop a pound of rice -- if it was any more expensive it would have been a ripoff. I got two of the hot dogs which were admittedly tasty but if you're serving Brightleaf hot dogs with decent warmed up canned chili it's pretty hard to mess up. Definitely were worth the $1.25 per dog. The 'fish burger' was $1.75 and it was a disaster. First off the incredibly rude girl behind counter absolutely refused to say what 'usually' comes on the fish sandwich ("does it come with slaw?" "Do you want it with slaw?" over and over again. The sandwich featured a quite rancid puck of fish that was inexplicably pink on the inside. My mom and I combined got through probably 1/4 of it before capitulation. All that said the worst part of the place is how unfriendly they make the customer feel. Literally everything is an up charge -- tomato, lettuce, extra ketchup packets, mustard packets, hot sauce and more). Almost half of the signage around the counter is lists of all the up charges. read more

Hot dawg a local place that offers down home comfort food. The friendly staff both up front and in the kitchen have rather heavy southern twangs. Non-the-less, it makes for the authenticity of the place. I may have gone for the fried chicken livers, but was purswaded by my server to dine on the home made meatloaf... man was it good. All for about $6 including 2 sides, sweat tea and my meatloaf smothered in rich gravy over rice. A dinner roll also accompanied the platter; served on a disposable plate on a tray brought to my table. Man on man that was a good lunch. Stopped in today for lunch and was pleasantly surprised! It's a small place that seems to be family run - definitely not a chain. Though it's easy off/easy on from I95, I think caters more to the locals. The menu is pretty big including the obligatory hot dogs and hamburgers but goes on to include fish, chicken, bbq, meat loaf, chopped steak, etc. One item I'm sorry I didn't get- the fried bologna sandwich - looked amazing if you're into that sort of thing. We stuck with a cheeseburger combo and hotdog combo. All the food is made to order so we had to wait a few minutes, but it was worth it. The cheeseburger patty was obviously shaped by hand (not a frozen puck) and the hot dogs were cooked perfectly and very tasty (Bright Leaf brand, I think?). We had ice tea to drink and it was also fresh (which can be a real toss up). Overall, the food and the service was definitely worth the stars. It was a great find and highly recommended! read more

It's a small diner and sometimes very busy but the staff are always in great spirits. I tried to work here my junior year of high school a couple years ago, and it was WAY too chaotic for me to keep up. Not fresh. Frozen and fried foods. Pretty terrible experience. When you put a sign up stating "no sharing drinks" you're sending an obvious message to your customers that you are cheap. An unexpectedly good place! My son and I drove a bit off of the highway but worth passing the chain restaurants. You can't beat the prices, you just can't. My son and I both enjoyed the food and we got out of there with full meals for around $12. Very friendly staff. If they aren't the owners they treat the place as it were theirs. There is a good variety of different foods and specials to choose from. The decor is a bit dated however the most important thing to me is that is is clean and it was! It is close to diner style (just missing the counter seating) and you can see through to the kitchen which looked nice. I wish we had one here in Northern Virginia! read more
