When I decided to try a heated yoga class last week, I was a little nervous. Hot yoga doesn't generally appeal to me; I enjoy a fan pointed straight at me and the a/c cranked, to tell you the truth. I felt a bit worried picturing a handful of sweaty, quiet, rather serious, yogis struggling to make it through an arduous sequence of poses while I peered longingly at the door. It turned out only one of those things was true: the sweat was legit! Sauntering across the parking lot into Harbor Yoga on Monday at 9:15, with 15 minutes to spare before class (go me!), I saw others walking in and thought "oh good, I won't be the only one." Hah!! 53! There were 53 people in my class! On a Monday at 9:30am nonetheless. My preconceptions were already falling apart. The energy in that lobby, though! Everyone busted through the doors with intention and genuine happiness to be there. There were clearly lots of friendships forged in sweat. Angie greeted me warmly, showing me around to the cubbies, restroom, a small retail section, and one large studio. I walked in with my mat and immediately felt the humid warmth of the room. "Embrace it. Let yourself be open," I told myself. It was elbow to elbow, but the faces on all sides were smiling and friendly. Invigorating music kicked in. It was going to be fine. "I know. It's a lot for a Monday morning" Angie joked as rap blared from the speakers. What kind of yoga was this? I'm accustomed to Ashtanga in a quiet focused room with a moderate pace. At the top of the mat, our arms shot up, placed to the mat, plank to down dog, up dog, and we sailed on. Our arm movements were kept in close, which made sense in the tight quarters. The sequence flowed, moving through poses with very little hold except for down dog which was held for 5 breaths. We were all reminded to take that time to drink water (yes, please do this), wipe your face with a towel, or come to child's pose. This is not a class where you'll be criticized for modifying. Variation and a "you do you" attitude are encouraged. I fact, it's so dark in there nobody will see much of what you're doing. They're all busy thinking about what they're doing anyhow. The class moved at a quick pace. Once a series of poses was established, it was repeated, gradually adding on creating some familiarity and inspiring confidence. In more challenging poses, variations were offered with plenty of useful cues. Angie moved around the room checking in; she explained that's what you can expect from the Mixed class. I'll always be honest with you: it was darn hot in there. I never knew I could sweat so much. Perhaps it was because we just kept moving and there wasn't time to think about how hot I was, or maybe the fun, energetic music that kept me feeling alright. The only thing I have little tolerance for is the feeling of being sweaty after I've cooled down, and I had to get the skinny on Harbor for you guys and drive 30 minutes home to my shower. The only thing I could wish for in the studio would be a shower and locker room. Next time, I'll bring a dry change of clothes.

I've been going to Harbor for 4 months now and I'm completely addicted. If you are looking for a yoga sweat session this is your place. I'm not kidding you will be soaked so be prepared and bring water and a towel. The instructors are really good, I can already tell a difference in my arms and shoulders as far as definition. I think I paid $25 for two weeks unlimited when I started which is a great deal.

Hot Power Yoga w/ Brian Kirk…read more I decided to try out GiveYoga this week through ClassPass. Overall it was okay, a solid 3.75-4/5. If i had to classify this experience, it's for independent yoga students that have prior experience and prefer a class that's more of a "headphones in and silent study" type of vibe. This particular studio I would say focuses on the aesthetics above all. So the rooms are nice, the bathrooms are clean, the welcome space is inviting, and the instructors are what you would expect. Good yoga studio, just not my cup of tea. I prefer a different yoga experience.

I visited here once when in the area via classpass for hot yoga…read more The studio itself is nice, though parking can be a little annoying right before class when everyone is arriving. There isn't really a lot so you park on Dunedin or Oakland Park ave, or High St if you can find a spot. I think they have a bigger room off to the left, but the lights were off or very dim throughout the whole space when I visited. The yoga room we utilized is to the right and in the back. Cubbies without doors are available to stash your stuff right before you enter the room on the left side. The room itself had high ceilings and was kind of long and narrow. The class was full--way too full for my liking, with other mats about 6 inches on either side of mine. The room wasn't SUPER hot, which might be a pro for some but not for me. I did get a bit of a sweat going by the end, but it wasn't the greatest work out I've had at a hot yoga class. The instructors phone also rang during class, and I wasn't super excited about the guidance through the flow. I'm not sure if I would visit again or not.
