Owner can be blunt and unfriendly. He seems to have his days where he took his medication and is available to be open to talking to customers and other days not so much. I came in with the intention to purchase from him after seeing the reviews of his stock, left empty handed only a couple minutes of talking to him. I had two old hand guns (100 yrs old), I had purchased 30 to 40 years ago and wanted to know more about them and their value! Dude who works there is an absolute gem. He knows a ton and genuinely wants to help and educate everyone who comes in.

I don't think I can describe how important this kind of a business is to the local community. I was on my was to the tattoo shop, but I had always wanted to see the inside of this store. Literally, I've been walking past and staring into the windows after hours for years. I happened to be out and it was a lovely afternoon during normal business hours (not my usual time to go out as a night owl) and I had the time to really look through this amazing place. Dave, the owner whom everyone seems to be rather afraid of turned out to be knowledgeable and patient. He allowed me to paw through his great collection of ... well, everything. In the process of looking at some of his wonderful collection I learned a great deal of things about the items. Dave also helped me select some gorgeous used books on the Civil War, and World War II at prices that were really good but most of all these are Pulitzer prize winning books, and I wanted them for my father. This is the kind of help that you can't find in most book stores anymore. But you could never find these books for these prices anywhere else. Is Dave a no nonsense guy who takes no crap and refuses to waste his time on fools, salesmen, and whiners? Yes. He's not there to sell you something. His collection of carefully curated vintage items in his store represents so many years of dedicated collecting. I bought some incredible things. I can't wait to go back with my son. If you don't appreciate this wonderful experience that's fine with Dave, and it's okay by me. Leave the good stuff for those of us who can appreciate it. I really love the hats and the vintage military items of all decades and from all countries. It was more like a museum than a gun shop. I had a fantastic time. Harbor Guns is a shop that sells mostly Curio & Relic or Antique grade firearms along with ammo for military surplus rifles, old bayonets/blades, uniforms, and books. The shop is cluttered and small to say the least but contains a lot of unique items. The shop owner is very knowledgeable and is definitely an intimidating man but if you are respectful and courteous, he will give you a lot of insight on the history of any old firearm you have or are looking to buy. Almost all his wares are sold at a fair price as I have bought ammo and clips for my old rifles that are impossible to find at any regular modern gun shop. I have been in the store many times and made many purchases. The owner is extremely knowledgable and very matter of fact. No BS or song and dance. His store is for the well educated firearms collector, or some- body that is really interested in gaining some knowledge. Even if you are just buying ammo, it may seem like a quiz. He will really make sure you are getting the right ammo for your firearm and that it performs correctly. His knowledge on antique and historical arms is exceptional. This guy is not unfriendly. He is just not a kiss ass. He is a no bs to the point old timer. He is one of the most knowledgable firearm sellers anywhere. He has been in the business for 40 years. As far as the store he has the best inventory of long guns anywhere. Only a few pistols but nice ones. The prices aren't cheap but he has great stuff Nd he's never going to give you a ear full of crap. He is a seller for the gun owner, not the big 5 shopper. read more

The owner sold me some bullets that have been very hard to find. He had them stashed away in the store, but he knew where to look and he found them for me. It was a great transaction and I was in and out in a short time. I had read all the reviews, and the gentleman was nothing like the descriptions I read here on Yelp. I will go back again and trade there, if I develop a need for anything concerning guns and ammo. read more

I think it's reasonable to expect a small business to have email or a fax machine. Rather than focus on the arrogance of the owner, I'm going to focus on the just this one factor. I have a Sig Sauer pistol that I'm looking to consign. I don't pretend to know the market for it right now and don't have a price target in mind. I just want to sell it. It's an easy transaction, but the owner said it requires a form before we can get the ball rolling. I am an hour away and asked if it needed to be a hard copy. He said no. I asked if I could email or fax it to save myself hours of driving. Nope. No email, no fax. He then explained to me how much time he was going to have to spend on the deal and therefore I should expect to invest my time as well. I told him that meant I wasn't interested in doing business with him and he agreed that would be the best course forward. I guess the gun business is strong enough that you can run a business like this owner does, but I don't see how anyone would consign a firearm here if the effort put forward in my case is representative of the effort put forward in selling the weapon. read more

What an experience to say the least, I went into the store curious about an antique firearm that I had recently purchased (not from Harbor gun). The Owner was very knowledgeable and so helpful even though item wasn't purchased from his store. After speaking with him for a lengthy period of time I felt like I should pay him for the knowledge he so gratuitously shared with me, it was more of a class than anything. When looking at some of his firearms His honesty was very appreciated he pointed out if gun was modified from its original condition and how to tell if it was when showing me his merchandise. Anyone who deals with antiques knows that this is a big deal especially when your as ignorant to these facts as I. Not to mention store is like a museum packed with history. In short it was obvious that I have found a new store for all future purchases and can't wait to go back. read more

This gun store is a prime example of what they all should be. Once you get past the size of the store you realize what's all inside. There's a great selection of guns(mostly rifles) and the owner is very knowledgeable about them. I may be only 19 and heavily into surplus rifles but this is my go to place. Me and my dad drive 3 hours to see his store and learn something new or hear a interesting story, Instead of the gun stores in town where we sometimes get lied to and treated badly. I found the owner to be one of the most knowledgeable gun people I have ever met. His shop is amazing place full of a large selection of old cartridges and etc... In my two visits to the shop I learned a lot just talking to him and listening to the general conversation amongst his friends. He was very helpful in transfering a revolver from out of state for me and I would definetly use his services for other transactions.. I have been going there for over 10 years and the owner is THE most knowledgeable person I know of when it comes to all things guns. You may or may not like his approach but he definitely knows firearms and is more than willing to share it with you. Just today he spent over half an hour educating me about head space issues I have with a couple of old Lee Enfield .303's I have. I think that if you go in there with an attitude you will get one back. He is a walking encyclopedia and I personally like his no BS approach. I highly recommend him and his store. Recently visited the Morro Bay area and checked out this shop. Wow, an old time REAL gun shop. Amazing collection of old guns, watches, military stuff. I read some of the negative reviews before I went down there, like the guy with the Sig. Sure glad I get these reviews for free. I don't think he understands that the FFL only gets 10 bucks for a transfer, per Kalifornia law. Not much in it for an FFL to bother with the paperwork. If I happen to need to do a transfer I make a point of buying a gun from the dealer to make it worth his while. The older gentleman whom I spoke with was very knowledgeable, and personable, not necessarily opinionated, Just one of those guys who probably forgot more that some will ever know.
