Wow! My kids and I actually had an amazing dinner. Despite all the lousy reviews somehow we got lucky. Maybe it's what we ordered. My daughter had the seafood Alfredo that she loved and said it was really delicious. My son had the elk burger which I took a bite of, and I thought it was great. We started our meal sharing. Some steamers in those clams are amazingly fresh and delicious and everyone enjoyed it in the broth that it was cooked and was perfect. I had the Seafood chowder which was good not great but it was good. But the prize was the king crab. Just love king crab we had a large leg and a small leg. We shared the king crab as the stuff wasn't cheap sometimes you gotta just go for it. Our server was great meal was just really an excellent experience because everybody enjoyed their food immensely. I've avoided this place for years because of the reviews. But at the end of season, options are limited. I knew based on reviews what to expect - a mixed bag - and that's exactly what we got. It was too cold to eat on the deck (which has a great view). So, we were forced to eat inside. The ambiance is horrendous - it's stuck sometime in the early 90s, with outdated, uncomfortable seating that's been patched. Worst of all was the smell, which LITERALLY smelled like poorly sanitized vomit. When we first walked it, there was a pleasant garlic smell, but once we were seated, the vomit smell became more noticeable, and I was terrified someone had recently barfed in our booth. My husband assured me it's a seafood thing... IDK, it was gross. I asked the waitress what she recommended since the reviews here are so volatile. I took her cue and ordered the broiled halibut with parmesean. I warned my husband ahead of time to order carefully, but he didn't listen to me and ordered a hamburger. Boy, did he regret it. He said it was the worst hamburger he's ever eaten in his life. My cocktail the "Pioneer" was prepared by a bartender with a heavy hand. It was tasty. But the star of the show was my halibut. As I've mentioned in previous reviews, I have a serious aversion to fish. But when you write food reviews, "when in Rome" is key to enjoyment. The halibut was incredible. It was fresh, cooked perfectly - tender, moist, and the crispy parmesean added the perfect splash of flavor. The presentation on the bed of tasty risotto and complimenting asparagus was excellent. Since my husband did not finish his hamburger, our clever waitress did not wait for us to ask for dessert. She waltzed out with a tray of options and tempted him to try something that he did enjoy. Since it was the end of season, I am betting that our experience may have actually been BETTER than normal because they weren't busy. Also ordered calamari for four of us to share. Waited a long time for our drinks. Calamari arrived pretty quickly. It was good but not enough remoulade sauce. Drinks finally arrived. I'm confused why the reviews are so back and forth. We had a great experience with great food and a great view. It's the only restaurant on the spit that you can sit outside and enjoy yourself. The salmon was delicious and so were the halibut tacos. Sure, it was a bit pricey but what around Homer isn't? Clay was our server and he was awesome. Drinks were great too. Came here hesitantly due to some bad reviews so I am here to set the record straight! Our food was SUPER GOOD! Seafood Chowder, Halibut tacos and Salmon BLT- were delicious. We ate every bit. The tacos were huge and the fish fresh with a crispy batter. The salmon BLT had crispy bacon, a huge tomato slice, fresh lettuce and a very good dill sauce. Plus the bun was warm and soft. Terrible service, food is mediocre, and they just want your money! We dinned with 6 adults and a baby. The host tried to put us on a table that would seat 4 adults comfortably. We asked to move to a table where we could all fit and we accommodated shortly after. Our server Amethyst was very sassy and unprofessional. We could hear her complaining as she talked to her coworkers near our table. She worked with an attitude and even tossed the last two entrees on the table as she raced to go take pictures with a table that was leaving as she said over her shoulder that she would be right back. The biggest issues I had was with the check. When I used to serve tables I would always let people know if there were up charges for any items, or inform the customers of any charges that they might not be used to seeing in their bill. There was $1 charge for each of the 3 ranch dressings that were ordered. They give military discount, but only to the person holding an ID. In all the restaurants that I've worked or dinned in the past, my experience is that we give the discount to the entire check. The worst part about it was that there was a %20 automatic gratuity added for large parties of 6 or more. I didn't see any signage of this on the window, at the host stand, or on the menu. Because I know how important tips are, if I receive decent service I'll tip %20. If I receive great or excellent service I've gone as much as %50. I rarely tip below %15 percent unless the service is absolutely horrible. This girl was definitely a %10 percent from me and probably most people would want to give her less. It seemed like because she knew that she would be getting an automatic %20 because of our "large" part of 6 that she could handle the table however she wanted because her tip was secure. This restaurant has a beautiful view, but is over priced and unprofessional. The fact that they don't have any signs of parties of 6 or more have a %20 gratuity added, they only give military discount to the person holding ID, and lack of training and expectations from their employees. Spent a day in Homer after the close of the season. We were here at lunchtime and this was one of the few places open on the Spit. The restaurant is quite large and very homey and casual. Lots of wood and fish themed decor added to the old time charm of the space. We were seated in a large booth to the side of the main entrance with large windows overlooking the harbor. Staff were friendly and service was good considering the shortage of staff during the time of Covid. I ordered the House Salad with Shrimp and a vinaigrette dressing. The salad greens were fresh and the shrimp was mild and tasty. It was a bit pricy for a salad, but the quality was good. Overall, I think it was good and would come back again. read more

Yes it was a nice establishment but I feel the prices were outrageous. We got the Alaska tour and it was very small and the salmon and halibut was very dry. I was actually very disappointed for it being right on the spit where it should be fresh fish. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. I'm not from here but have been to Alaska before and have had better salmon and seafood else where. First of all, the views! I sat on the patio , it was the most gorgeous day, surrounded by water in both sides, it was beautiful. We started off with drinks. I will say the Bloody Mary was OKAY. it's $18 and in my opinion tasted like your basic Bloody Mary. They add lots of garnishes, but not worth the price. However, the key lime pie martini was unbelievable. Super yummy, super light, end a great recommendation from our server. The appetizers and entrees also came out really quick despite being busy which was nice since that's always a concern! Everything we ate was magical I've been in Alaska now the past 4 months trying all these different foods, hands down best and most freshest seafood right here. The ceviche was so light and fresh. The halibut cheeks were cooked to perfection. I got the tour of Alaska which is pricey yes, however worth every penny. The pistachio crusted halibut with the risotto was phenomenal. I'm not sure why this place has so many bad reviews, we typically have high expectations for food especially when dining out and we enjoyed everything we got. We got the calamari and the coconut crusted halibut cheeks, both were very good but if I had to choose one I'd get the halibut cheeks. For out meals my husband got a Caesar salad, had really good flavor could've use just a tad bit more dressing but was still good, and he got the seafood fettuccine. He was disappointed with the portion size/amount of seafood considering the price but it delicious; I don't typically care for Alfredo dishes but this one was very tasty. I had the halibut fish and chips, the fries were very good, the batter on the halibut was good, and the halibut itself was very tender and juicy. They also have a pet menu! it was one of our first meals in Alaska and it was good but not great. The fish and chips were definitely the better of our two meals. I have had better but that's not saying that these were bad. I did like them, however I think there are better places for this meal on the spit. The burger was medicore at best. A lot of complaints here about the service, but ours was great. We got sat right away, our waiter was prompt and got everything correct. All the while he was cleaning the table next to us from some messy pigs that let their children destroy the booth. The halibut fish dish came with mushrooms but there were literally only 3 mushrooms in the whole dish. And the mashed potatoes were a bit lumpy. The scallops were good. But still lacking a bit of flavor. And the risotto was also lacking flavor. Presentation was nice though. If food was seasoned a bit more, I would for sure give a higher rating. read more

Welcome to Homer Spit. There are many spots to choose from when dining. I chose Harbor Grill. I leaned towards a tapas style when ordering so I sampled two of their appetizers: The Fried Brussel Sprouts and the Ahi Tuna. The Brussels were defined as a "Crispy Brussel sprouts tossed with smoked pork belly and fried shallots, Then topped with a sweet and tangy balsamic glaze". The pork belly, shallots, and balsamic glaze had great flavor but the Brussels lacked any crispy texture. They were served extremely al dente with little to no sign of being fried. The majority of color came from the glaze which gave it a fried appearance but lacked any of the crispy consistency I was looking for. The smoked pork belly, fried shallots, and glaze encouraged me to eat more of the dish than I normally would have. The Ahi Tuna was disappointing. The presentation appeared as though the dish was prepped in its entirety the day prior and placed in a refer. The Tuna lacked any real color and was extremely dry. This can be masked by the copious amounts of Japanese Mayo and poorly concocted Kabayaki sauce. The seaweed salad would have been the only enjoyable aspect of the dish as it tasted very fresh, however, the salad became "lost in the mayo" as I labored through the dish. The service was decent as the server provided just the right amount of attention however the restaurant was relatively empty...Maybe because it was toward the end of service and end of season, maybe it is for other reasons. read more

The risotto was a little mushy - but had a good flavor. The halibut and salmon on the dish was good! The shrimp was fair and I didn't not have the scallops (my choice). Our first experience was severely lacking. The hostess just completely forgot about us so the already long wait was even longer. The server came to grab our drink order and appetizer order, the person with me had to run back to the car so I gave her my half of the drink order and told her what apps we wanted, they were out of one of the apps and she said she'd come back once my person returned. She never came back. Not even to check the food. After 45 minutes we ended up going inside and talking to the host to track down our server so we could pay and go somewhere else. The portions were at least generous but the fish though cooked nicely as far as moist but very greasy and the fries would have been good if the weren't so greasy too. Do they need to turn up the temperature or use different oil, I don't know but they need to fix that.
