We walked in there with an early reservation and unfortunately decided to sit outside since the inside seemed very loud with the live piano. As the sun was beating down, sitting outside as the time passed was not very pleasant as well. We went with peaches and peppers and panty peeler for our cocktails. One of my kid tried the mango passionfruit mocktail and loved it. For my dinner I had the Blackened rockfish. It was exceptional - the skin was crunchy and the kale and curry sauce was perfect with the fish. My son loved his shrimp dumplings and my other kid enjoyed her Mac and cheese. My husband liked his sockeye but the highlight for him was the grilled bok choy. Crispy, smoky and perfectly cooked. Dessert of pot de creme was well received as well. The Kannery is probably my favorite restaurant in Homer right now. The food was interesting and the menu had a nice selection. I definitely could have eaten there several times on my short stay. I enjoyed one of their non alcoholic mocktails which was delicious and fruity. For an appetizer I shared the king crab fondue which was to die for. There were big chunks of crab and the cheese was very liquidy which made the bread absorb it nicely. Not sure what sort of cheese it was, but it was tasty. If I could give this place zero stars I would. It is so overpriced and the food is terrible. I don't mind paying a high premium if the food is good, but this was really awful. The risotto had literal ice cubes and it was like soup. The halibut that was over $50 was beyond salty, the potatos had sprouts, and the lettuce was rotten. The shrimp dumplings tasted like rotten shrimp. The waitress was also unwilling to take the part of the meal off the bill after our concerns. Do not go here. read more

The bar was super cool. Staff was super friendly and kind. The fish and chips the batter was a little too thick, lacked a little flavor but the tartar sauces was good. A restaurant with a great view (except for that camper) that is open year-round. What a delight! Welcoming and informative service by Taylor! Kudos to staff that brings water and menus quickly and can answer questions. I was not going to indulge in alcohol but opted back in with their smoked dirty martini. Taylor informed me that the vodka was smoked in-house and wanted to make sure I liked a smoky taste. Glad she did as I've experienced over smoked alcohol but this wasn't! I appreciated the glass filled to the brim in a smart martini glass. It was delicious and went down smoothly. Also noted that they offered non alcoholic mixed drinks at reasonable prices. Kudos! Onto the food. Sable fish was very good. The couscous underneath really made the dish with arugula and sweet potato cubes. Also came with candied walnuts but not overly sweet. Yummy. The pineapple fried rice was also very good and not greasy. Very Thai like. The grilled duck was on the side which is better than being mixed in. Tender and moist. Also easier to share. Incredible flavors here - staff was amazing and it's a popping place! Got the halibut fish & chips and the lamb shank, all I can say is WOW. Tender meat and well seasoned veggies on the shank, and the fish was, I kid you not, the best I've ever had. Perfect balance of salty, dill, and a fried crunch - but the fish was still the star. The Kannery has fabulous food ($$$) in a rather noisy, cafeteria-like (or sports bar), environment. The noise is the "con" of this place. The food is excellent, prepared perfectly, and everyone is friendly and professional. The food IS expensive, because seafood, but on par with what is in the lower 48. Expect an average wait while the very fresh seafood is prepared. The "ghee" was just plain clarified butter, IMHO. read more

You never know how places will be when you walk in 30 mins before closing but the hostess was very welcoming and reassured we could still order dinner. The cocktails were fantastic but the food (burger and salmon tacos) were just OK. Quality definitely did not match price. Our server seemed a bit out of it but checked on us enough. I was so surprised at the beautiful Kannery. We arrived pretty early in the evening and we were able to get a seat quickly, even though reservations were full online. We sat down and were quickly offered a menu and water. We ordered fish and chips, oysters, a salad and the king crab fondue. The food arrived pretty quickly, the king crab fondue arrived first and it was delicious and creamy. The best part was that they offered fresh carrots, celery, and peppers along with some toast points. The fondue flavor overwhelmed the crab, but it was still a nice dinner. My friend ordered the fish and chips, and it was a generous portion of fried fish. The batter was light, and it was very hot when it arrived. It also included some homemade potato chips that were crunchy and delicious. I neglected to take a picture of the oysters, but they did look lovely. The salad was very small for the price. After dinner. we decided to have dessert. We ordered crème brûlée and cheesecake. The crème brûlée was a blueberry crème brûlée and it was nice, not amazing . The cheesecake was clearly prepared elsewhere. I would like to return to this restaurant and try more of their food. I was pleasantly surprised and the view was amazing. read more

The restaurant was out of two of the five meals we ordered from the menu. The "Fire & Thread" cocktail I ordered did not taste like it had any Tequila in it. The House Chips that came with two of our meals had no flavor. We were in before the dinner rush, there were only three other tables being served and our meals were very slow in arriving. Total mixed bag. Some outstanding dishes, but rude service, one bad dish, and a shocking tip expectation. The food was fresh with 2 (out of 3) outstanding dishes. The mushroom pasta was genuinely outstanding -- the peapods and roasted tomatoes were such unique and flavorful additions. The farmers salad was similarly good and also had some unique touches. When we went, there was a live piano player setting a nice ambiance too. However, two staff members were downright rude. For example, had a snarky comment when we used a coupon given to us by our hotel. Another rebuked us when we were about to sit at an open bar table (as directed by the hostess) because they were saving that one. Beyond that, the veggie burger was disappointing -- the dry patty fell apart as soon as you ate it and the chips were an odd side. Finally, the restaurant sets the tip range at 20-30%, in addition to adding 3% automatically for the kitchen. In short, they pressure you to tip 23%-33%. With this type of expected tip, you'd except consistently strong service and food, which is not what we experienced. This left a really bad final impression. read more

We went to The Kannery to celebrate my birthday yesterday and was highly disappointed on how the food went downhill. They haven't been in business for that long. I'm wondering if the person who built and establish the place no longer is involved. The reason I chose that place for my birthday dinner was because the three or four times that I went there before yesterday, the food was awesome! I ordered the usual yesterday which was the bao buns (pork belly which was served with edamame), kale salad, shrimp and grits, and my husband ordered the fish and chips (which was rockfish). The rockfish dish was the first time we tried it. The pork belly in the bao bun was paper thin and black. It didn't taste burnt, but it had no flavor and had no substance with such thin pork belly. The edamame was a nice touch to add with the bao bun, but they were drenched in salt! I had to pop the pea out of the shell in order to eat them. The kale salad was really, really, good but who can mess up a salad. It could have used less dressing, but it was still good. The biggest disappointment was our main meals. They used spot shrimp in the shrimp and grits and if you know spot shrimp they are really, really small. I think I had three and a half on my plate. The grits were the size and shape of a cut piece of cheesecake and there were two slices of it! They encompassed most of the plate. The dish usually came with jumbo or regular size shrimp. The grits were bland and not fried long enough. The "gravy" that comes with it was a darker brown then usual and thicker. The rockfish was one large piece and battered in a liquid batter so it easily fell off. They should have cut it into smaller pieces. The fish tasted fishy. It could have been handled and taken care of better before being fried. Thankfully, the Manager was called over to the table and took my dish off the bill. My husband didn't want to complain about the fish because that is not his thing. He ate what he could just because he felt obligated. Highly disappointed because I like to support local restaurants and for them to be successful. If I'm going to be spending $30+ for a meal then I have some expectations of goodness! To spend $32 on the shrimp and grits with three and a half spot shrimp that were less than bite size does not support the price. The Manager did say that they usually put 5-6 shrimp in there. That didn't help the situation because I would have had a couple more bites in, but I would have still have said something. The shrimp and grits were so good beforehand. My partner has wanted to try the present iteration of the Kannery because of good memories of pre-covid dinners with our families in the prior establishment of the same name. We had the chance on Sunday on our drive north. Quite a different bar and restaurant today! Not a place that suits our tastes anymore. The service was friendly but we didn't have any alcoholic drinks and we didn't enjoy the flavors of our meals. The presentation of our meals were very nice, but ... Her ribeye steak was too rare for her medium-rare choice, and she was not a fan of the mixed herb topping; it had a floral component that we couldn't recognize. My smoked black cod and risotto had a very strong smoking, more like for an appetizer with strong cocktails or dark beers. I couldn't taste the depth of miso, which the fish/risotto were described to have. Oh well, we gave this place a try. read more

Wow was this an unexpected find! Absolutely delicious food! The pan seared rockfish was melt in your mouth, on par with fresh fish from Hawaii. We were so impressed with the food at the Kannery. Everything we had was absolutely incredible. The restaurant is off the main strip, but it has a lot of charm and ample parking. We didn't have a single bad dish. My favorite was probably the shrimp dumplings, but the Alaskan crab legs, shrimp and grits, the bone marrow and pork bao buns were all delightful.
