After researching online we discovered that Valu had the one we wanted. We were greeted warmly at the door by both the cashier and a gentleman asking if we needed help, though not in a pushy way. We declined because we like to be able to look at merchandise prior to having an employee with us. Once we checked it out and decided on our purchase we were able to get an employee right away to go to the back to bring it out for us. They wheeled it up to the cashier for us and then loaded it into our car. Quick and easy. If they carried more items I needed I'd shop there more often. 21-3

That dreaded feeling I'm going to walk the long aisles, up and down, and still not finding the specific thing I need. Exhausted, like I just went to the gym type of feeling. Is not the feeling I get when I enter a Valu home center. I like going there because it's a midsize hardware store, easy to find what you need, very decent prices (especially if you enroll in their rewards program) and best of all their really is "customer service." Today, like many days before when I entered the store, a friendly employee was quick to greet me and asked me if they could help to find me what I'm looking for. When I'm so pressed for time, this means a lot to me. I often find the very thing I came to the store for, but because I'm not scouring through a humongous store, I end up having a few minutes to browse for other things that I might want to buy in the future. Now I have my eyes set on LED lighting for under the kitchen cabinets and an American Standard toilet. Exciting stuff!! Maybe Santa will bring me these goodies? I've been a very good girl this year. Funny thing, five years ago I bought a bookshelf at this very store that I really grown to appreciate use in my home office. Having moved to a new house recently, I thought it would be nice to have one more bookshelf to make a pair. One would not expect to buy furniture in a hardware store, but surprisingly Valu has a great selection of affordable and stylish wood furniture. The furniture brand name is Sauder. Valu sells this brand a few dollars cheaper than if you bought it directly from Sauder on their website. The store manager Joe, was very pleasant and efficient. He sweetened the deal by giving me a discount on the floor model and setting up delivery and a decent price. I couldn't be happier! Truly, the customer service is golden. It's what make me a repeat and happy customer. Plus, Valu is a family business. Not a publically traded company. They have thirty plus stores in New York and Pennsylvania. I'd much rather support a family business.

I also appreciate that I don't feel like they're trying to oversell or upsell on things I could do less expensively. For example, we are redoing our kitchen ourselves (it's an ongoing process if you know what I mean) and we reused the old cabinets because they were in good shape. The old cabinets had doors that were not compatible with hidden hinges unless you wanted to spend an *obscene* amount of money on hinges. The guys at Rockler's walked me through the options and I realized that we just needed new doors. Initially I thought we would make the doors but then that felt a bit overwhelming with all we needed to do. So I decided that we were going to buy doors. Rockler's sells doors. I figured that was perfect. When I went back in to tell the guy helping me that we were going to buy new doors, he told me that the style door we were interested in was actually a very simple one to make. He outlined the process right then and made us feel much more confident about the process. Making doors is really a better option for us because we will save a lot of money that way and we've done some woodworking before - just not cabinet doirs. We stopped in today to get our materials and when I saw that they didn't have any reviews I wanted to add one right away. Such work is jobbed out and HD doesn't back up the quality of the work. Having said that, we went yesterday for a replacement flourescent tube and a fuse for it. Like many HD shoppers, I've often found it difficult to find an employee to help find something. Yesterday, a super HD worker named Colin was on the spot even as we stood in front of the light bulbs looking for a 3-way bulb. Not only did he offer help without being asked, but instructed me on how to adjust the brightness tone on the bulb I was going to buy. Yes, there were some words to that effect on the package, but I'm sure I wouldn't have bothered to read closely. It's a light bulb. Colin next kept us from buying the wrong flourescent tube. What we'd picked up was a 12w and we needed a 15w. (Always helpful when shopping for a replacement anything to bring the old one with you.) Turned out HD did not have an 18-inch 15w, but at least we didn't have to come back to return the wrong one. And then Colin found the correct fuse we needed, Done. (We did get to Ace on Summer St in time to grab the last 18" 15w tube they had in stock.) Helpful and knowledgable employees can certainly make all the difference in any shopping experience.

The service from the sales person could of been better. From getting someone in for measurements to the items coming in were not communicated well at all. Measurements were suppose to be done with 72 hours, this did not happen so I had to call the store twice only to find out the order was placed incorrectly. Had I not called I'd probably still be waiting. When it came time for installation the wrong back storm door was ordered! What is saving this review is the installation crew, Conlee and Dylan. They went over and beyond. They were able to correct the wrong door and get a new one here within minutes. They were professional. Did a great job with the installation. Totally respected the property. They cleaned up during and after the installation Explained everything as they were doing it. Just great service there. The actual store service people were disappointing. The actual doors themself were priced reasonable, and they provided nice discounts.
