Was totally disappointed after reading the reviews and taking my family to eat here. We had to ask for menus after another man (not the waitress) asked people that arrived after us if they got menus. We ordered the appetizers combo plate first and it was a VERY small plate for the price. The portions of the food were average, pretty bland taste to everything, and she only asked if we needed refills once, after we were done eating. When I got the receipt, I had to figure out what everything was cause the total was outrageous, AND it was all in chinese!! Never spending my money here again. read more

This is a gem on HWY 50. The broccoli beef was a delight. The beef was tender and the broccoli was stir fried and steamed just to the point of changing color and deepening flavor, yet retaining crispness. Very good food every time I've visited. Ely is a very hit and miss town with food so I was very happy to find a place that had consistency when it came to taste. I can't say I've ever had a problem here. Shrimp fried rice is great, Orange chicken is good (A little sweet for my personal taste) and the Prawns with lobster sauce is awesome. I like that it's a family place. Mom and dad seated me and were wait staff. A little girl brought out water and a place setting. Grub came out fast and seemed fresh and wasn't overly greasy. I feel bad giving a 2, but I found the food to be "meh". Maybe I'm spoiled by the Chinese food I've had where I come from, maybe it was an off day. The Hot and Sour soup was rather thick as was the sauce on the General's Chicken. When both started to cool it was kind of hard to eat. The staff was nice, the place was clean, and cozy. Prices were good. I will say I liked there egg rolls, and I'm rather picky about those. Give it a try if you are in the area. Maybe you'll have better luck. read more

This place was awesome. My boyfriend and I stopped in for dinner on our way through town and we were pleasantly surprised! The staff was very friendly and the food was great. We ordered the wonton soup, lemon chicken, and the fried rice with vegetables. The lemon chicken was our favorite! Everything was really flavorful without being overly oily AND they don't use any MSG! Would recommend to anyone in town :) As for some reviewers comment about too many vegetables goes, I think each meal was well balanced. i want to thank the wait staff and the chef at the Happy Garden. We came in with very little time before a movie started. I explained the situation and was willing to admit that maybe we were not giving them enough time to prepare a meal. They understood and came through like champs. I had bbq pork fried rice and my wife had the special noodle soup. Both were tasty and well prepared. Next time I'm in Ely they will have me as a customer and I'll give the menu a more thorough test. read more

The service was absolutely terrible. The owner wouldn't give us another cup so I could have some tea, I asked her if she could take my orange chicken back because I'm sick and it was upsetting my stomach. I ordered vegetables instead because I figured that would be easier on my stomach and she threw a fit. When we got our ticket she double charged us for tea, and double charged for our food. She told my grandma to fuck off and said that she "never fucking wants us back" and her husband threatened to call the cops on us. We said it was no big deal and we would pay for our food and they jumped my grandmas ass. This place is the worst place I have ever been too in my life. I asked if I could have vegetables instead of rice and she gave me extreme attitude and told me no and that I didn't have a choice. She had a terrible attitude the whole time and was extremely rude. Hands down the best restaurant in Ely and it would still rank favorably most other places. Friendly, attentive service. Decent prices. Been there three times. There are a few things on the menu that aren't great - several of the choices for Family Style dining are too salty - but most everything else is pretty competent. I'm not sure why this place got lower reviews, maybe these people don't know good food. First, we ordered pot stickers. HOMEMADE POTSTICKERS! Wow! Large pieces of pork inside large excellently pan fried ( one side). We also ordered ginger beef (large slices of ginger really light this up!). Chin Ju chicken was a surprise. My wife and I had dinner there last night. She had Mongolian Beef & I had Lemon Chicken with a beer. We enjoyed it and it was inexpensive, only $23.70 plus a tip. If we are traveling through here again, we would have dinner here again. read more
