The main dish was taking quite a while (at the 45 minute) mark I asked the waitress "if I ordered the wrong item?" My husband and I walked across Aultman Street from our hotel to Mr. Gino's because we had a hankering for pizza -- and we definitely chose wisely. It looks like an old casino from the street (it might have been a casino once) but now is filled with quirky lighting and comfortable booths. We read through the menu of Italian and American choices and found the pizza offerings. We opted to "build our own." And it was delicious, with a homemade crust, hearty sausage, red onion, and my spouse's choice of pineapple. It all worked. We ordered the smaller 14" size and were full and brought home leftovers. Who wouldn't want delicious leftover pizza the next morning? Our server was friendly and efficient and it seemed like it was a family-run place. Looking around, it seemed like everyone else was enjoying their choices, from the couple eating plates of pasta next to us to the guy across the way who was digging into his T-bone steak. Felix is a friendly and sweet server. When I asked his favorite dish, he recommended the Chicken Vesuvio, which I had overlooked on the menu. I decided to try it and I'm glad I did. It was a moist, perfectly cooked thick chicken breast in a light and tasty sauce with lightly steamed vegetables. He also brought me a side of the angel hair pasta. The meal was delicious! My love enjoyed his angel hair pasta primavera with chicken as well. And the tiramisu is an excellent finish to the meal. The decor makes it cozy and inviting, while the adjacent bar area looks like a fun place to be on the weekends. Felix said they have karaoke sometimes. There were guys in playing pool. Starting off by saying the only worse Italian food we've had was in Hong Kong at some random "Italian Bistro"...which was similar to frozen budget brand food....not even the "fancy" Michelangelo's frozen and definitely nowhere close to Costco's great Lasagna. Staff was friendly. Prices...well... Italian, $25-$50 per entree. Surprisingly expensive appetizers... We order Calamari for Appetizer and Seafood Scampi for dinner. Calamari arrived with the world's tiniest pile only rings. Obviously "fresh" frozen...fried in really old oil and overcooked. Only red tomato pasta sauce to dip (actually pretty good). $18!!! For like 12-14 1inch rings? Entree was described as Prawns, U10 Scallops and Mussels...served over linguine. What we got was ONE scallop, burnt...6-ish overcooked rubbery shrimp (not expected bigger prawns). And 4 mussels also just ok...overcall served over mushy linguine noodles and everything sitting in a bland watery soup, that vaguely tasted like garlic, lemon and butter. We were starving after driving for the past 5 hours...so we ate everything. Amused ourselves watching the other 6 diners in the restaurant on a Friday evening...their reactions eating their food... With tip, $83. For one entree, one appetizer and a couple waters... I actually longed for Olive Garden... Sad overall for the experience...can only assume the servers were nice because they felt bad about what they were serving. Hope I saved at least one person from going here. read more

The manager is obviously an egomaniac and was rather abrasive. Food was adequate as we were hungry but not worth the money spent. Constant beeping noises ruined any ambiance this restaurant might have had. The man who took my phone order was very pleasant and professional so he gets 5 stars. Being in the Midwest i was not surprised to see it had more mozzarella cheese on it than sauce or noodles. I still thought it was yummy. Overall my experience was wonderful. What shocked me were the prices. I'm on a road trip from Los Angeles. Menu prices were more expensive here in ELY than prices from similar restaurants in LA. Just to be certain, I looked up the last LA Italian restaurant I ate at. (C + O Italian). Spaghetti and meatballs was actually 2 dollars more in ELY than in LA. The LA restaurant gives you unlimited garlic knots on top of it. Why? This is a trend I've seen more and more as I travel, the cheap prices of small town restaurants have disappeared. It makes no sense because I can't imagine jobs in the area pay as much as jobs in larger cities. Like minimum wage in ELY is 12 an hour. IN LA it's 18. Yet the menu prices are MORE in ELY. WHAT? Something ain't right with the economy right now. I'm not sure what the fix is but I hope things can return to the way they were. Wow! Pleasantly surprised with this great Italian food that could be served in any bigger city. Ely has a gem of a restaurant here- nice menu variety, Italian classics, steaks, seafood, wonderful pastas and flavorful sauces! Ely is an interesting little town, limited options but enough to satisfy. We decided to try out this little Italian tonight on the Main Street. The ambiance and vibe was great with a modern Italian feel and nice decor! We were immediately sat at a side booth type table and brought waters and menus. I ordered the Angel Hair Primavera with no mushrooms and Dave tried ordering an 8oz sirloin but the waiter said they were out of steaks so he decided on the lasagna. Before the entrees arrived, we received starter salads which was nice! Food came out in reasonable time. Dave liked his lasagna (that came with a little piece of garlic bread) I was not a fan of my pasta. It looked really good upon arrival but the flavor was pretty gross to me. It came with a lemon wedge, which I did not squeeze because it just wouldn't have tasted right.... The flavor is hard to describe, kind of like lemon and the smell of dirty feet/socks! As soon as I walked in the door I was greeted. A nice piano background music for you to listen to. A glass of House Chardonnay within minutes. A really great variety of dining choices. I went with the lasagna, which came either a side salad and a bread stick. The lasagna was delicious, the homemade croutons had just the right crunch. Started off great- we were seated right away, the restaurant wasn't busy at all. Got our order in, and then the waitress came back and told us that they were out of cannelloni. No big deal but that was the main reason we came. Ordered chicken Alfredo instead and got the soupiest, blandest dish ever. Lasagna was good, but the alfredo sauce was liquid- glorified milk on chicken and pasta. The service was pretty bad. The restaurant was empty save for 2 other tables and we received no water refills or check-ins or anything. Our waitress was kind when she was here, but other than that, not amazing. Third time there, last time a was a disappointment, the shrimp was way overcooked, very tough and hard to chew, mentioned to the waiter, he offered no recourse. Gave it another chance a few days ago, had the chicken in a real good sauce, the chicken was too dry and the sauce didn't help. Won't be going back. Don't be fooled by all the neon outside, or by the fact it's squeezed between two casinos and across the street from another. This place stands alone. A big, high-ceiling room divided in some places by partitions, a smattering of booths, tables, and yes a collection of bistro tables in the back. Creatively (wildly) decorated with vintage signs (did I mention it's an Italian place?), plants, doors, windows, etc. You won't find this type of place or decor for 100 miles. There's a lively bar adjoining it with a dance floor and music, and the combination of Italian dinner music and rap coming from the bar was novel, but interesting and fun. But it's the food dummy that made this place so special. We both had typical Italian salads and entrees. All were made to perfection. Add a glass or two of wine (if you're a wine lover embrace this place because there aren't too many other places in town that serve any wine but the pink stuff) and it was the perfect Italian dinner. The server was kind of eclectic but was funny and attentive. It's a little pricy compared to other places in Ely, at about $50 per person for a salad, entree and a couple drinks but worth it. They do have several salad or sandwich options too if you're more budget conscious. If you're just traveling through or staying nearby to enjoy the plentiful outdoor adventure in the area this is a respite taste of a big city restaurant in a small western town. To celebrate my 65th (!) birthday, Gayle and I drove the "Loneliest Road in America" as far as Ely. Once we arrived, we checked into the local Holiday Inn Express, enjoyed a welcome drink at the Prospector Casino next door, and then proceeded to look for a nice place to eat. We also brought we us a 2007 Audelssa Cabernet Sauvignon that we had been saving for a special occasion. Looking for restaurants in Ely was a bit problematic as some that were listed had closed or restricted their hours. Mexican food was popular and there was a decent looking steak place, but neither seemed appealing at that time. We finally chose Mr. Gino's based on strong reviews and a desire to try an Italian option. We then made reservations, although that probably wasn't necessary. We parked on the street nearby, arrived at the restaurant and were seated quickly at a nice table with a view of the room. The corkage fee was a reasonable $20 and our server for the evening (Roger Jr.) was fantastic. Gayle ordered the Seafood Scampi, while I chose the Spaghetti Frutti di Mar. Both dishes were amazing, with Gayle specifically complimenting the amazing scallops and me losing myself in the seafood medley within the delicious and spicy red sauce. The Audelssa was a perfect complement to our meal, and it was quite a treat to actually experience fine dining since we can't remember. A restaurant of this quality in small town Nevada (~4000) was quite a pleasant surprise and one we would happily repeat if and when we return to Ely. Friendly service - a bit on the slow but we were also starving after driving and hiking all day. My friend got the Shrimp Primavera. I got the Chicken Marsala. Large portions and both dishes came out piping hot. My food tasted alright, not bad but nothing to rave about either. I felt the price was a tad on the high side given this is a small town. But why I'm giving Mr Gino's a 5 star is for the tiramisu. You must try it. It was unexpectedly out of this worldly good. Interesting spot in the old part of town. Arrived at 1900 on a Friday and most of the tables were full so I sat at the bar. If you're going alone sitting in the bar is not a great idea there's nothing to do. No TV the bartender is actually a server. The server recommended Tuscan chicken and it was excellent. Very juicy with a cheesy sauce with vegetables and vegetables themselves were crisp but not overcooked. The salad was 99% iceberg which is not my favorite and a sprig of romaine with a way below average Italian dressing. Parking is anywhere around the building. It was easy, I didn't go to the restroom so I can't tell you about it. read more

We were looking for a place to have a nice Italian meal while in Ely and this seemed to be the only place in town to find one. Ely is a dusty, but cute, throwback town along the Loneliest Road in America so we weren't sure what to expect at Mr. Gino's. From the outside, you can see it was once a place called Mr. G's Villa and that it must have been a glitzy place back in the day. We were pleasantly surprised when we walked in to hear smooth jazz in the background in an overall congenial atmosphere instead of something matching the tired facade that greets you on the street. A young waiter immediately greeted us and we were seated at an available booth. I wish I had gotten this young man's name - he really made our night extra enjoyable with his happy demeanor. When our salads arrived, I was a little concerned about what to expect of the rest of our meals because they were very small. However, my husband's Chicken Parmesan and my Angel Hair Primavera were plentiful and delicious! I also had a very generous pour of their house cabernet sauvignon! Wow! I've been coming to Ely for the past 8 years and have always experienced the same restaurants. This time my family and I decided to try something different. So we placed a phone order for pick up. Thank goodness for Yelp because I was in the mood for a good pizza and Mr. Gino's popped up. I had no idea Ely had a Italian restaurant. Even better it was a Sunday night and they were open late compared to all the other restaurants around town. They have a lot of items on their menu. Everything sounded delicious but I was really in the mood for a pizza and some chicken fingers. They didn't offer chicken fingers on the regular menu but they did have them on the kids menu. Which to be honest with you was the perfect amount for my husband and I to share. They came with french fries and we ask for ranch on the side and buffalo sauce. The pizza was cooked to perfection it was crispy and not soggy. We asked for pepperoni with half jalapeño and it came out perfect!! When I went in to pick up our order I was surprised at how nice the restaurant was decorated. The ambience was nice, the lights were dim and it looks like a cute date night spot. The bar was not open but it looks like they had a little lounge area off to the side of the register. In the back of the restaurant you can see the kitchen. The restaurant looked very clean. There aren't many restaurants in Ely and while I am not a pasta eater Mr. Gino's looked the nicest. (I had planned to stop for Mexican but the way that establishment incorporated into the casino made it unpleasant.). The ambiance at Mr Gino's is superior. Obviously a lot of care was taken in creating the setting. I ordered a chicken Caesar salad since there is a lot on the menu I don't eat. It was delicious. It was a cold day and not very warm inside; the waiter also brought me a caramel honeybush Rooibos tea which was so delicious and kept me warm. Sadly no real Italian flavors at all. Spaghetti and meatballs was very weak in flavor. Meat sauce was watery and just no real Italian sauce flavor. Meatballs were tough and not fresh, where of where is the classic flavor? Also in the meat sauce was fatty chewy flubby un-edible bits. Not even some fresh parmesean cheese grated table side. How could spaghetti and meat sauce be lower flavor than from a store bought jar? Chicken Ceasar salad is iceberg lettuce, not romaine. Pizza came out nice and hot, but why no Italian flavors? I only liked a small bite of maybe considered a breadstick? It was the size of a small tiny fruit pie, but it was Hollow and quite good. Restaurant got busy in downtown Ely and service was lacking on a Friday night dinner time. No refills of our iced tea, basic service. No straw for drinks, no iced tea spoon to stir the sugar and lemon. A bus person sat the entire room and provided the only true customer service and acknowledgment of new entering diners. It was a Thursday night and we arrived at 6:30 and were immediately seated. Parking is easy, street parking and parking lots. Soon our server greeted us and took drink orders. Their wine selection is limited with a variety of house wines covering most varieties. The selections we had, Chardonnay, Cab, Merlot, were good. We were taking our time and our server timed accordingly. We were pleased with our selections, dinner included a salad and bread sticks. The bread sticks are unusual, more a bread than a stick and very tasty. We had Lasagne, Cannelloni, Chicken Parmigiana with pasta and meat sauce. Meals were delicious and cooked very well.
