First time coming to the happier camper cafe. It's an awesome cafe because they are serving you out of a small RV, and next door to the cafe they build the RVs so you can check them out. I know I've only talked how hipster and cool the cafe is, but let me tell you, the coffee is good as well. I'm definitely coming back. The barista is also friendly and helpful as I'm not a coffee drinker but my GF is. He was very helpful on understanding that I wanted my drink super sweet. We are normally tent campers, but this time, we rented the Trillium for a camping trip in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. The trailer was perfect for my family of four. My husband and I slept on the banquette dining area that converted easily into a bed for two, and my kids slept on a folding couch that magically turned into a bunk bed. I don't know if I can go back to camping in a tent- the vintage trailer made it so much more fun and convenient! Like everyone says, Derek is awesome. He should be cloned! This summer, my wife and I wanted to take our two girls, ages 3 and 1, on what would hopefully be our first of many summer road trips. My wife and I had an amazing experience with Happier Camper. We rented the HC1 (Their brand new manufactured trailer) and were blown away! Such a great design including solar power, which was very handy considering our campsite didn't offer electrical hookups. The camper was very versatile as we were easily able to configure the inside to both a queen-sized bed and a dinning area. My favorite part of the trailer was the XL back hatch, which we kept open most of the time, allowing the cool breeze to circulate through the trailer. We brought an EZ-Up but didn't even have to use it because of this amazing feature. Overall, we would rent this trailer again in a heartbeat. We took the space odyssey on a 2 week, 2500 mile trip to Yellowstone. Perhaps ambitious with two young girls but we were eager and excited to rent from happier camper! We had seen them in sunset magazine a few times and read the awesome reviews. Here were my problems- it seems that by being "cool and retro" they are given a pass to also be unkept and not maintained between customers. There were so many small things that could have been fixed with a few minutes and a screwdriver. The door wouldn't stay open, only because the piece was installed upside down. The cupboards inside wouldn't stay closed but they just needed tightening. The trailer we rented had a small water tank but it wouldn't hold any water (which we had counted on on in the national parks) because it had a leak in it and the hookup water leaked so badly that the whole area got wet and flooded to our carpet in front of our door. These all were 100% avoidable annoyances that took a few days to get used to. Luckily our trip was 2 weeks so we had time to let things go and figure it out. When we did address these things, Howie was incredibly humble and apologetic. My emails with Derek were always helpful until we had problems and then I got a condescending "you should have rented an RV" and "in the summer there is a lot of back to back rentals and things can get overlooked." All in all, our trip was amazing and unhindered by these disappointments, but I can't say I'd recommend them to my friends. I understand they are very busy with their new business but with just a 20 minute walk around before customers arrived, this would have easily been a 5 star rating and we'd be repeat customers. All of our issues happened in the first days, not after several days of traveling. read more

My wife suffers from a rare disease called scleroderma last year we thought we had to give up camping because she couldn't make it through the night in a tent due to the cold and uncomfortable air mattresses. This year we discovered Happier Camper. And got back to camping with our two kids. Howie was great in helping us choose the Trillium and gave great instruction hooking it up to my PriusV. That's right, you heard me, these things can be towed by a Prius. Mileage did go down to 30mpg but still beats driving a truck or SUV that runs under 20mpg. We rented the "Sage Coach" last weekend from Derek at Happier Camper. I was so excited when I found them and found out they were nearby in Silverlake. After doing lots of research on camper rentals I found their policies and guidelines to be very reasonable compared to others and they had great prices. There is no cleaning fee, pet fee, insurance fee, etc., etc. that you get with all the other rental companies. You simply tell your own insurance you are renting the trailer so you don't pay additional insurance fees. Derek the owner is very easy going and a pleasure to deal with. He definitely goes the extra mile to make you a happy camper! While the campers are uber cute they are also cozy and vintage, in other words small and minimalist. If you are into high-tech gadgets and new car smell these aren't the campers for you. Although, Derek has upgraded some of the trailers with cool features. Ours was pretty basic but it did come with the solar panel to recharge the battery...pretty cool! They are lightweight and easy to pull with your car. They do have stoves and the table area converts to about a double sized bed. If you are really tall, the bed might be too short for you. My husband and I are both under 6' and if we were much taller the bed would be too short. There are no bathrooms in the trailers but Derek will give you a portable toilet if you want one. If you want to make all your friends jealous, rent one of these cuties! You will be the envy of the everyone! Overall our experience was excellent. We would definitely rent from Happier Camper again! read more

These vintage camper trailers are so much FUN! This was my wife and I second time renting. You can pull with almost any car, we have a four cylinder Honda and have no problems. What better place to take the vintage camper than Jumbo Rocks in Joshua Tree. Thanks to Howie, I was able to get through the renting and setting up process in pristine time. Vintage items are popular and pricey now so it was nice to have a cozy retro feel that is affordable. Don't get me wrong, the trailers are not perfect but they are authentic 70's and extremely charming. People stopped me left and right to view the trailer; what an attention getter!!! My husband and I were so happy to find this little gem of a rental trailer company. I honestly don't know how I even found them online other than the Lord led me to which was such a blessing. We rented the Trillium camper which was a great experience for never having used a camper for camping before. We've considered pop up tent camping but on our trip we had others coming up to us with pop up tents telling how these are so much better of an option. The prices are so reasonable and no fees for pets, our expenses were able to be more focused on other needs for our trip. The team here are very pleasant and Howie is the man. Our son loved using this camper and it was so easy to take care of. I will say this though, if you rent em, keep em clean and smelling good otherwise it will feel a little crazy inside. I rented one of these compact trailers from Derek last summer and rolled out to campland in San Diego. My husband and 18 month old daughter had a blast in Derek's Boler. We loved it so much we bought a Trillium travel trailer within months. Derek was easy to deal with and is very knowledgeable when it comes to these fiberglass trailers. Pick up and drop off times were flexible and it's true once your at the campground, you can unhook the trailer from your car, and manually move it around. Thanks Derek! I bought an HC1 happier camper in fall/winter of 2019. It has been habitual problems for my family and I. Our purpose in purchasing it was to transport and house my child my wife and I to areas around the US for one to three nights at a time and to cause minimal effort in doing so. We chose the HC1 because of its light towing weight and modern style. Unfortunately it's been a nonstop headache for us. When it arrived, it came missing pieces (the steps up to the door, the shower curtain, and miscellaneous manufacturer upgrades), with a defect in the fiberglass reinforcement at the main door, and with a malfunctioning heating unit. The heating unit was brought to a repair man that fixed the unit but after two months of infrequent usage (only 1 five day trip) was broken again. The defect in the fiberglass of the main door has also not yet been repaired despite repeated contact with the support staff. Overall, I would recommend this company only to people that plan to have a camper as an eye piece in their driveway. If you want a functioning camper, look elsewhere. read more

I rented a trailer from Happier Camper based on the reviews on Yelp as well as the photos on the company's website. They advertise that one of their trailers was featured on the cover of Sunset magazine. Well, the one we reserved was definitely not the one on the cover of the magazine, which we learned they don't rent out for camping, only for parties or photo shoots. The trailer we were given was very old and dirty. It was never cleaned out after the last party used it. The knobs on the stove were actually partly melted off! In addition, the battery pack in the trailer broke while we were picking it up and Derek and his brother seemed to have fixed it before we took off on our trip. However, the battery pack failed again during our rental and we couldn't get it to work. When we returned, we asked for a partial refund. Derek actually accused us of breaking the battery pack even though it wasn't working when we first picked up the trailer. He finally grudgingly agreed to refund us $50. Unless and until they upgrade and clean their trailers, I would not recommend this company. read more

We had an awesome time in the "Trilium" on our weekend getaway to Big Sur. The camper itself is very lightweight and easy to drive with; my husband had no complaints :). Inside, it was spacious for both my husband, myself, and our medium sized dog. We found it to be the perfect balance between tent camping and going full on RV camping. Howie was very friendly and responsive when reserving for our trip. He also had some helpful tips for first time hitch drivers such as ourselves. Thanks Howie! I think it is important to note however, that if you plan on using the fridge inside, try to get a campsite with an electric outlet! Next time we will for sure. Happier Camper (aka the amazing Derek) helped us with our maiden voyage of trailer towing and trailer camping. I was the primary driver and Derek helped me feel very confident about driving with the trailer! He was invaluable in giving the best lessons to a newbie in the trailer world. Our towing car is a Subaru Outback 4 cylinder and it was no problem driving with the trailer. Now for the camper - we rented the Boler panama! LOVED LOVED LOVED it! We have been tent campers and my husband told me he realized he is a bonafide trailer camper from now on. We spent a couple nights at Leo Carrillo in Malibu and loved having the camper instead of a tent. My 5 year old son had a blast in it. When hanging outside at the campsite, all the passing campers smiled, gave us the thumbs up and/or stopped to talk about the trailer. Expect to make lots of friends with these. When bringing it home to unload our neighbors all wanted a peek and loved it! Derek is the absolute best. He has put lots of TLC into these trailers. They are super comfortable, cozy and charming. The rental fees are reasonable and he is very flexible and accommodating with pick up and drop off times. These vintage trailers are just so much fun!!!! However I have never had the same level of compliments about my own Scamp Fiberglass RV mainly because Derek the owner of Happiercamper.com has customized his trailers to look like amazing eye candy(think gum drops driving down the PCH). In any case my wife, 2 kids and I have been having a blast beach camping around southern California in our trailer. We take off for Big Sur next week. They have several different layouts and different types of modular furniture that can be special ordered and you can switch the furniture around for each trip and even while you are on the trip itself. Room is at a premium consequently the camper is designed where you can have a living room like modular seating with comfortable arrangements for couch like seating. Then when it's time for bed you simply rearrange the seating and it converts to all flat bedroom sleeping. You can even have them install solar panels and you can exist off the grid. The person helped my husband hook up the camper to our car and made sure everything worked. It was so much fun to travel around Northern California and have a safe and clean place to stay. Unlike the conventional RV places where costumer service is virtually inexistent the owner is really vested in its customers satisfaction and he will answer all your questions and concerns. He guided us trough the biggest hurdle which was getting a hitch installed on our Mazda minivan. I strongly recommend staying away from uhaul and going with your local hitch shop (I went to OC to get ours). What a great way to spend time together. We were very nervous about driving with a camper attached but Derek gave simple and assuring instruction. Our camper was perfect! Had just enough room and function and comfortable & cozy. Meals inside were perfect. Make sure and take bedding, matches and cookware. Our only complaint is that we didn't use it longer. Derek had great ideas about scenic routes and campsites along the way. The whole team at HC are professional, easy and nice especially their very active and sweet dog. Communication with Derek was easy and he was available if we had questions during our trip. What could have been a stressful time ended up joyous.
