    Tempura
    Ana T.

This place is as good as Carlos Tendon and way cheaper. Dont be fooled that this is in a food court. Their tempura is soooo crispy and delicious. One of my favorite tempura spot and parking is easy too :) the service is fast too i ordered via the self order kiosk and got my food within 5 minutes

You have to get over the horrid service and you will be fine. Hannosuke is in a food court inside the most wonderful Japanese Market in Los Angeles. There are several places to eat there and a lot of seating to be had. Parking is easy in their huge lot. We go there a lot. We often get take away, but we have eaten there several times. We love their food. Their prices are fair and you get what you pay for. They make it fresh there so it is never cold or dried out. They have some of the best shrimp tempura we have had. It is just as good as fine dinning. The shrimp are a good size and the batter is perfect, never just too much batter. Their rice is great and we really love the dumplings. You can order this as a meal, the menu is on the wall. They have a great selection of dishes. I always change my up. I just want tempura, not the fried veg. The dumplings are great as is. It is all great. The table you sit at is kept clean by someone I assume the food court shares. Now, the bad news. The service here is just beyond rude, unhelpful and this is always the way it is when we are there. We have been maybe 10 times. It is always the same woman who just wants nothing to do with you. She sits behind a dirty, thick glass and if you try to talk to her, have fun. She will point to the wall, have you look to the note on the counter that says "here" and "To go". She really wants you to order from this tablet. I do have to speak to her to tell her all shrimp tempura, no veg. She does not respond. Now, she can talk and she does speak English. She is just so very rude and I guess hates her job. Anyway, you get a bill, you pay her and you get a number. When your food is ready you go get it. Now, she can pull this all off so rudely, never with a smile. She is just not a nice person. But suck it up. The food is worth it.

    Tempura combo with hot soba.

A casual Japanese tempura and soba kiosk inside the market. You quickly order on the tablet and they will call your number when ready. Tables available and restrooms as well. I recommend the tempura and soba combo! You can have it cold or hot soba.

They specialize in tempura. Frshly served with hot ponzu dipping sauce. Fast and clean.

Original Tendon was excellent. Well prepared. The sauce is especially notable. I was surprised that when I asked for a cup of water and was told: not available. I asked if there was freer water anywhere in the food court and and again told. No. So I had to go to the grocery becersge section and choose a Ochoa tea. What a senselessly stupid policy. Otherwise recommend

I think a lot of people are hating because they expect fine dining. That's not what this place is all about. Hannosuke has great fresh tempura dishes at half the price of anything you'll find on Sawtelle or Little Tokyo. There is also rarely a line up, or waiting for hours just to get a seat. Their shrimp tempura is a must, I usually get the bowl or combo depending on my mood. Also make sure to get the tempura poached egg, it's the star of the tempura show here. I'll definitely be back if I'm grocery shopping in Mitsuwa, in the future!

1.5 in unagi nuggets, made the shrimp look huge lol
    Maya M.

Been going here for years. Ordered one unagi tempura combo and couldn't believe the smallest pieces of unagi I've ever seen. They were tiny nuggets! The menu pic is deceptive, they want $17 ($3 more than the original) for less vegetables and 2 tiny 1.5" unagi nuggets that don't even touch the edge of the bowl. Being half Japanese, this is a shame. I've never seen unagi donburi pieces this small before. You guys should just take it off the menu.

    Staff is protected with Plexiglass.

Although my last review was three years ago (in 2021), I've come back here a couple of times. And the last time was about a year ago. Notable points: They still have the plexiglass between you and and the staff. They don't accept cash. They now have a self-service POS terminal (see picture). So if you have a problem pressing your finger where everyone has pressed, that may be an issue. But it's good to know that they protect their staff. (And probably save on labor.) They still don't have free drinking water. Maybe that will never come back. So just need to buy or bring your own drinking water. A bottle of a 12-ounce water at Trade Joe's is only 17 cents so buy a couple when you do your groceries For my recent visit, I ordered the Vegetable Tempura for the first time bec I remembered after all the years that I was having Shrimp Tempura that I am allergic to Shrimp. I think the Vegetable Tempura came with Rice. But I'm sure it came with that Seaweed. And also Pepper. I also ordered a side of White Fish. That was good. The Vegetable Tempura was not so good. Maybe because it is vegetable. I wish I was not allergic to Shrimp. I also ordered Cold Soba. That was a lot of food. Next time I'm going to ask for a to-go container and bring home my leftover rice and vegetable tempura.

After haircuts, I usually pop in to the Mitsuwa next door and have lunch. Hannosuke is one of the places we like for something quick and filling. However, small warning that while this spot is typically very good, there are days where the tempura can be just a tad bit too greasy. I wouldn't completely discount it though! The Original Tendon Set is still something I like to take my chances with because when it's still good. The reason for 4 stars only is because it's just not a hit 100% of the time. Food comes out fairly quickly but just make sure to listen carefully for your number to be called or you'll miss your meal!

Our go to spot for tempura plate sets! Spicy chicken tempura is always nice and consistent when you are craving fried stuff and the rice and egg on top is always a beautiful addition to complete the meal. Always a clean plate for us when we do have lunch or dinner here. Then off to the bookstore and market we go.

Soba and Mini Tendon Set and Takoyaki
    Queenie M.

The store was clean and the staff were friendly, answered questions on the menu I had. I ordered the mini tendon + mini soba set & takoyaki! Probably wouldn't order the takoyaki next time but the mini tendon + mini soba set was good! I would come back again to try other items on the menu during lunchtime!

There's not a lot of service to rate, but my review is strictly based on my experience with a delicious bowl of tempura. The 5 star rating is base on both quantity and quality. For about $15, you get a bowl of perfectly fried spicy chicken tender, (2) tempura shrimp, and tempura broccoli, seaweed, and pumpkin and lastly a tempura gooey egg too. They top everything off with their tempura sauce. I always get their chili powder because I like the heat. Why do I like this bowl of rice so much? Well, if you've ever taken bite of heaven and just know this food is done exceptionally well. Then is the the bowl of leave me alone to my moment kind of experience. This is one of my top restaurants to try in L.A. Then there's Mitsuwa where you can go get a nice drink, of dessert if you choose to.

    Kids Tendon set
    Ashley H.

This place impressed me for being in a food court! This kids set was only $8 and it came with two shrimp, pumpkin, seaweed, egg, and rice! Love the runny egg and the batter on all the items was seasoned very well. Can't beat such a well priced meal in LA! Service was quick and food is fresh to order. Cozy cafeteria style seating too.

The Santa Monica one is more grab and go as it's their smaller flagship location. This business has been carried by the owner Keiko who has brought a slice of Japan outside of the designated communities of West LA's Sawtelle and DTLA's Japan Town! Here (at either location) you will find unique delicious flavors of omusubi but also called onigiri rice balls! That you won't find anywhere else! Rice balls are actually shaped into triangles and stuffed or mixed with simple ingredients like a salted plum called ume (it tastes salty, and tangy with a touch of sweetness) To more engaging offerings like the lucky cat with japanese pickles with fresh wasabi, ginger, and bonito(dried fish that is sliced paper thin) These finger foods can be enjoyed as a snack or grab a few to make a meal. The Culver City Location has a decor that immerses you in Japan. They have a small market section with alcohol such as saki, handmade dishware from Japan, cute claw machines for kids, and expanded meal offerings! Besides Keiko being absolutely amazing, the food is as well! From curry stuffed to fresh shisho leaves and pickled wasabi!!! There's lots to choose from and the best part.,,.they have always had an expansive vegan menu! Yes they are very Vegan Friendly! I love the Eggplant Chili Miso and Wasabi Tsukudani. I had it once before, when I was Tokyo, but don't remember it. I won't soon forget this place. I tried 3 omusubi: the Sunny Blue Curry ("tender chicken and scallions simmered in wafu curry), the Miso Beef ("tender beef and caramelized onions cooked with homemade miso sauce"), and the Tokyo Tori ("chicken with sweet and sour sauce"). hard to pick a favorite; they were all really tasty. Though I kind of think the sushi-like nature of omusubi might work even better with fish, which they also offer; specifically the Kara Tuna ("albacore tuna with diced cucumbers and onions with spicy mayo sauce") and Spicy Salmon ("cured salmon with chili seasoning"). Maybe next time. As for the place itself, it was clean and neat, and while there was only one table inside, they had a nice outside area on the side. They also have a staff who were friendly and helpful. As for parking, I easily found a spot on a side street on a Wednesday around noon. There's also some metered parking on Washington. Just watch the signs. If I had a complaint -- and I don't, really -- it would be that I wish they had some coffee drinks. But that kind of wouldn't fit the vibe (and, to be honest, there were tons of coffee places on Washington on my way home). Instead, their beverages were fittingly rather Japanese. Like Ramune.

Parking is in a little lot with 2 hours free upon validation. You can park towards the right or left. We walk towards the back of the harbor, in order to get in line to be seated. Seated is very limited and not recommended for large parties. It's perfect in a couple or threes. It took us about 15-20 minutes to get seated with waves of people coming in and out. The server and chef we had on our side were very patient and kind. I opted for the 6 roll set of fish: I had two toro, two salmon, a yellowtail, and an albacore to go with my premium Sapporo beer. If I had to be very transparent: the prices here for fish is very, very cheap. 6 rolls of $29 is amazing. But as we all know, quantity over quality. The fish does not taste as sweet, delicious, nor does it melt in your mouth. It's very lackluster and a big call for you to dip the rolls into the soy sauce. This place is great for beginners who are experimenting with the raw fish/sashimi, but for frequent sushi goers, I'd say to avoid this place. It's not worth spending the money. I'd rather pay a bit more for quality handrolls elsewhere. Again, it's not the service itself, but it's the quality of fish that is purchased to supply their restaurant. I wasn't impressed and I don't think I'll be back.

We tried the signature sobar lunch, which came with several courses (I got the traditional tsuyu with brisket, the cabbage, seared sashimi and grilled duck - delishhhh, and a handroll, along with a spiked lemonade drink, which was a delight). The vibe and ambiance were cool and the service was helpful and warm to us. Overall, the food was fresh and the flavors were mostly very good (particularly the duck and sashimi). I think maybe I'm not the biggest fan of cold noodle dishes, and the house broth was good, but didn't quite knock my socks off. I also felt like it was on the lighter side portion-wise, so I feel like I did leave the place still a little hungry. Given the average price on the menu, that part was a little disappointing. I would return, but I think next time I'd need to levelset my expectations on the portions and order a warmer noodle dish.

At an izakaya, you expect small dishes so you can linger while you enjoy your drinks. Here, these include charcoal-grilled meat skewers, dumplings, ramen, and sandos. I visited during brunch and had a large bowl of ramen with a Banner Dark cold brew. I was seated at the bar where the stools have low backs, so you get a little core workout. Before the meal, they bring a warm towel. Manila Clam Ramen: The broth is subtly briny and sweet from the clams and dashi, so don't expect a typical rich pork soup. The Manila clams are sweet and tasty. While I'm not normally a high fan of the texture of clams, these are plump, springy, and juicy. In fact, with their huge size and orange color, they resemble mussels in flavor and shape. Slivers of the preserved lemon give a zesty, aromatic, and fermented flavor. This complements the scallions and sweet citrus zing of the red Fresno chilies. The mitsuba leaves are like a mild parsley. Today I had some interesting interactions with water. In the morning, while I was surfing, I was spitting out the aggressively salty water. My first sip of RVR's tap was noticeably sweet, cold, clean, and refreshing. When the clam broth arrived, the level of savoriness was just right! Parking: You can usually find street parking a few blocks away.

And so began our truly unmemorable meal. We had gyozas, a mixed rice, and though it was recommended that each person order individual ramen bowls, we opted not to because conceptually that's a little weird at an izakaya? Our splurgiest item was probably the crispy aji sando ($25). It's a very small portion, though I'm not looking for value at this point. It was a very expensive fish sandwich on regular ole bread - not a ton of flavor even with the morita aioli. The extensive vegetable offerings is probably the most exciting menu plug. The best thing I ate were the roasted sweet potatoes ($16). The potatoes were sweet, roasted, drizzled with a lime aioli and then topped with parsley shichimi. Sweet potatoes are the perfect vessel for any accoutrement and these were no different. Service was spotty - fast dishes, long breaks, repeat. Idk. I feel like there is a whole lot of hoopla for very mid tasting Japanese food. There wasn't anything innovative or new about the flavors I sampled. I feel like any strip mall in Torrance could take RVR down in a fight. Not for me.

From the moment we sat down, everything was just perfect. The sushi was absolutely outstanding -- fresh, beautifully presented, and full of flavor. The sauces were on another level, perfectly complementing every single bite. Everything we ordered was delicious, and you can tell real care goes into every dish coming out of that kitchen. The ambiance was really lovely too -- warm, comfortable, and inviting. The kind of place where you just settle in and feel good being there. It made the whole evening that much more enjoyable for the whole family. Now here's what made this visit truly special -- there was a robot server delivering sushi right to the table! My 2-year-old was completely glued to it -- wide eyes, the biggest smile, entertained the entire meal. As any parent knows, keeping a toddler happy at a restaurant is half the battle, and Mikomi made that effortless and fun. The human staff were also incredibly warm and attentive, making us feel genuinely welcomed the whole time. If you want top-tier sushi and a dining experience that's fun for the whole family, Mikomi Sushi is an absolute must. We will definitely be back! P.S. -- My wife loved it so much that she visited twice on her own while I was at work. I think that says everything you need to know.
