Beef Udon - Mar Vista | Los Angeles, California
Justin L.

Udon is my favorite comfort food. After a long day of volunteering, I was craving a steaming bowl of noodles and drove over here for dinner. Sanuki Sandou is inside the food court at Mitsuwa on Centinela Avenue. Parking was okay at 7:30 PM on a Sunday night. Lots of cars and customers but many spots available. Seating is adequate. You order at the counter and they'll call out the number on your receipt when the food is ready to be picked up. They also make soba, rice bowls, tempura, and other things. A good amount of options were $20 or below, which is reasonable. The noodles were somewhat unique, the shape is thicker and flatter compared to what I'm used to eating. The texture was bouncy and chewy as expected. Broth was watery and the beef slices were average. The soup comes with a tiny scoop of green onions too for extra healthiness. Simple and no frills. In my opinion they could have added some tempura flakes to make things slightly more interesting. Bring wet wipes to clean the table and chairs before sitting. Trays can be stacked on top of the trashcan as you leave. It was fine, I was fed. Come in with low expectations so you won't be fully disappointed.

My go to 'fast food' - when in the mood for a quick bite that's fairly reasonably priced and provides a decent portion then this is where I go. Located within the Mitsuwa marketplace food court, it's always consistent and good. order at the counter and wait for your number to be called in the loudspeaker, plenty of tables to enjoy a meal served hot in real bowls, or take it on the go. It's a pleasant casual atmosphere, lots of free parking and you can top of the meal with other goodies from the surrounding options.

Very good Japanese udon, curry and tempura sets for a quick meal. And the prices are very reasonable at $6 for a small dish. We ordered a tempura sets and a small beef curry bowl for a total of $12. Service was quick and friendly.

As advertised.

You buy dinner and spend more than 20 dollars, but they won't give you a cup of water. The food is terrible. I ordered number 26, and a small number 23. What the photo shows on their menu, is not what they serve you. See photos of the same item. That is known as false advertising. The dishes are 95 percent rice and the pork is chewy meat, covered in onions and egg to hide the terrible meat. The rice also tasted like soap. I spoke to the lady at the counter about the false advertising, and she simply shrugged. Do NOT eat there!!!

I finally found a place to have my favorite mentaiko udon! And it is here. The portion is adequate and filling and the price is cheap. The whole plaza is easy to find with plenty of parking spaces. I ordered via doordash because my credit card gives me $5 off. Or else I would order in store because online order is expensive The food is tasty nonetheless. I can't wait to come back even though the location is inconvenient from where I live.

The food is okay, but the service is slow. We got there a little last noon on a weekday. There was no line, and no stream of food delivery drivers picking up food either. We ordered Nabeyaki udon and plain udon. And then we waited. And waited. Now, if this had been a sit down restaurant, I would have given them a benefit of a doubt and assumed they were making some of the order from scratch. But this is just one of four food counters at the Mitsuwa Marketplace food court, where the utensils are plastic spoons and cheap, disposable chopsticks.

I can easily say that everything in the Mitsuwa food court is delicious. The variety of eateries is nice but Sanuki Sandou probably has the most variety as other stands are more of a specialist in their menu item. Go and check them out for yourself! Parking: large private lot VERDICT: Rinse and repeat

Always a fan of Mitsuwa and service is quick. Rice and beef are good for the price point. The onions are grilled well but there is not a lot. Overall, a little dry but is fine.

Cold Plain Soba Noodle with dip sauce

This place was located in one of the stalls at the Mitsuwa Market in Mar Vista. There's got a fun little selection but I wanted something without me and just small because I wasn't super hungry. So I got the cold soba noodles with dip. I was walking a dog earlier and it was a warm day so I drop the dog off at home and came back to do a little grocery shopping. After, I stopped by the this stall and got the cold soba. It was kinda perfect. It was satisfying and the flavor was good. The fact it was cold made it refreshing. The ordering process is similar to most food courts you find at malls, but the food in Mitsuwa just always seems to at least feel a little fancier. I'm a fan.

I dont recommend this place at all. Cashier was nice, but the chefs showed they are not fit to make food for people. Unprofessional and unacceptable. I had to take chefs picture because I was so disgusted by his and his fellow chef (no pic) behaviors. They were looking over the kitchen window and smirking. They seemed to be judging customers by their appearance. They were delaying serving food... I had to throw my food in garbage because I was so digested by these guys' behaviors and worried that they would put something unsanitary to my food. You know what I mean? I just couldn't trust these guys. I never had such horrible dining experience that I waited to take these pictures so that I can post and warn people to stay away and tell management to make some changes here. They showed that they were clearly mentally not fit to stand there and make food for people. These two individuals should be replaced. They are harming your business. I saw a google map review written a month ago about similar behaviors of chefs, I assume they are the same guys.

Average: sauce wasn't too good and rice was mushy. Tempura was average
Adrienne D.

Shrimp tempura is just so so now. I remember it being really good but that's not the case anymore. I got the tempura bowl and I wanted the small one but was given the large one with all the vegetables. Everything was just average. The batter was the same you can find anywhere. It wasn't extremely crunchy or tasty, it was just whatever. The rice was mushy and the sauce was a weird blend of two sauces. It didn't have much flavor to it. I may try it again for old times sake but I'm disappointed they use a different batter now. Nothing good lasts forever I guess.

Sanuki located inside the food court of Mitsuwa Grocery store is one of my most visited takeout places! I've never eaten in when I order Sanuki so I don't know how it tastes right out of the kitchen! I usually get to-go and it's wrapped very well and then I drive either to work or home to enjoy it. It's comfort food for me and I find myself always returning to Sanuki when I have trouble deciding what I want when I get to the food court. You can get so many different sizes since items are various sizes and is cheaper if it's smaller so it's good if you aren't starving BUT also good if you are because I get the combos and you get so many things. One combo can have soup with rice and beef and another can have soba noodles you dip, along with salad and an egg with tempura! Just so many choices!!! There are select credit cards that they do not take..I think it's Amex and discover? Combo 51 is my favorite and Combo 48 was also tasty!

Chicken udon
Celine W.

Tried Sanuki and went for the chicken udon noodles, which turned out to be pretty good. The dish wasn't overly salty, and the denser noodles were a pleasant surprise. The parking lot was ample, conveniently located inside the Mitsuwa shopping center. It's a seat-yourself setup, and ordering is done at a window. Overall, a satisfying udon experience with a convenient and straightforward dining process.

Awful - one of the worst Pork Culet Oyakodon I've ever tasted! It was colorless and bland. What a waste of money!

There is sometimes street parking but the availability is rough, it's tough to park, and even one of the meters we ended up at just didn't work. They only charge a $5 cash service charge though, which isn't bad. We were lucky to be seated right away, even in a packed restaurant. The restaurant has a surprisingly modern design, and is comfortable for as small as it is. We were quickly served their signature kimchis and barley rice. The kimchi, particularly the yeolmu (young summer radish) kimchi, has a unique flavor profile well suited to their food. We ordered 2 bowls of their plain kalgooksu, 1 bibim milmyun, and 1 tteokbokki. The food came out fairly quickly. The kalgooksu was as expected the star of the show. The anchovy broth brings a savory complexity that seems impossible for a soup made from just dried fish and a few other ingredients. It even has a rich, almost thick, quality to it that is surprising for a fish broth. Their noodles, the titular kalgooksu, have the signature irregularity and chew of knife cut noodles. I appreciate the vegetables that always come in kalgooksu, like potato, pumpkin, and zucchini, which offer an earthy heartiness to the light soup. My only complaint is that the potato is in huge irregular chunks, and is barely cooked, though I feel like I have had this issue with many of the kalgooksu bowls I've had over the years. The bibim milmyun was solid. I think that I prefer the texture and flavor of naengmyeon buckwheat noodles, but the milmyun, which are made with mostly wheat flour, still provide a satisfying chew. The sauce tasted bright and fresh, especially with a splash of added vinegar. It also came with a small side portion of spicy pork and some rice paper to wrap. The tteokbokki was the one let down of the meal. To be fair, I wasn't expecting much out of tteokbokki at all restaurant like this whose specialty is essentially the opposite. I ordered the tteokbokki as a "safe pick" for a picky eater in the group. It turned out to be a bit mediocre in our opinion, and that friend ended up enjoying their kalgooksu anyways. If you're looking to try this dish, it's definitely one of if not the best I've had in Southern California, so I'd totally recommend it. I'll also warn to steer clear of the Garden Grove restaurant of the same name and specialty. I think it's a disappointing mimicry of this place.

I love making a stop when I visit LA…read more Stopped by a weekday lunch and it was so easy to park. The restaurant is clean and cozy and service was nice. Quick in and out lunch. There was not anyone at the restaurant at the time, but people did start trickling in as more time elapsed. We got our food relatively quickly as well. FOOD: I ordered the spicy pork tsukemen ($23.45), which is their dipping noodle. The noodles are thicker than standard ramen, but in a good way! It comes with thick chashu (thick, fatty pork) slices and soft boiled eggs. If you haven't had tsukemen before, you essentially dip your noodles into the broth and then eat it that way. The broth is extremely flavorful and there are also pieces of chashu in it as well. The only critique that I have regarding this is the broth was lukewarm which made the dish taste slightly off. I've tried this dish at another branch and the broth was also lukewarm there, so I'm not sure if this is a location issue or a standard amongst all branches. Also, this dish does not really have any vegetables in this, but I also don't know if traditional tsukemen has veggies included. SERVICE: Service was quick and everyone was nice and doing their job. Didn't seem like the staff was slacking or messing around while there weren't many customers. They were very attentive to us, refilling our water immediately once they saw it was getting low, and being very attentive towards if we had any other concerns or if we needed anything else. PARKING: There technically is street parking but since it's in Little Tokyo, it's going to be very difficult to find it. There's $4-6 valet parking available nearby the location. There are a lot of people walking around though so just be safe. INTERIOR: It's not too big of a place but it's also not too small as well. It looks very well kept and clean. BATHROOM: Two gender neutral bathroom stalls that are both very clean and accessible. No issues here with them. TLDR: Overall, I thought the place was pretty good to eat at! I would definitely come back for the tsukemen (as long as the broth is warmed up until it's hot). A very good dish combined with great music (they have some great Japanese music variety) is definitely a spot worth coming to with friends !! :))

It's been sitting on my saved list for a while, and honestly, this turned out to be the perfect opportunity. The space itself is bright, clean, and welcoming with warm woody tones throughout. Casual setup where you order at the counter and they bring the food out to you. I had already looked through the menu beforehand, so the real challenge was narrowing down what to order for one person. I failed at that... and I'm very happy I did. Started with the Pig Ear Salad 滷豬耳朵. Braised thin sliced pig ears dressed with soy sauce, chili oil, sesame oil, scallion, and cilantro. OMG. So good. Tender, flavorful, perfectly braised, with that satisfying chewy texture done right. Also got the Fried Peanut Salad 五味花生 with garlic, cilantro, scallions, vinegar, and Thai chili. Super crunchy, bright, refreshing, and honestly addicting. I added a cup of the Hot & Sour Soup 酸辣湯 too. Organic tofu, beech mushroom, carrot, bamboo, woodear mushroom, and egg. Super comforting with a really balanced tang and peppery heat. Not overly thick or heavy like a lot of Americanized versions can be. Exactly the kind of soup you want during a long travel day. For noodles, I ordered the Dan Dan Noodles 擔擔麵. Sesame-peanut sauce, cucumber, cilantro, crushed peanuts. Delicious on its own already, but I ended up adding some of the fried peanuts from the salad into the noodles and it became even better. Then the Three Cup Chicken 三杯雞 with sesame oil, soy sauce, rice wine, and Thai basil. I do wish it had a little more wok hei, but overall the flavor was still really comforting and savory. Extremely good with rice. Had a glass of Gewürztraminer alongside everything, which paired surprisingly well with the spice and aromatics. Their wine list leans more organic / natural wine focused, which felt very LA in a good way. Ended up sitting at a high top next to one of the managers and had a great conversation throughout the meal. She ended up hooking me up with the Traditional Shaved Ice 傳統刨冰 with grass jelly, red bean, boba, sweet potato balls, taro balls, brown sugar syrup, and condensed milk. I was already planning to order it anyway, and wow... I finished the entire thing. The brown sugar syrup was incredibly fragrant.
