My first time at this range and it won't be the last time either. The guys there were very personable, knowledgeable and informative. Jim made sure safety was first and foremost but also made sure that we enjoyed our experience - and have fun! Dale helped me with my gun that kept jamming. He assessed it, cleaned it and also fired a few rounds. The jams were not user error. It's the gun..don't buy Walther P22. It's not a reliable gun especially when your life depends on it. Dale showed me a few other compact guns that I can rent and try before I buy. They also have an archery range and classes. I will definitely be going back. I hesitate to write a bad review since I've been coming out for nearly 10 years. The staff is all great and amazing HOWEVER one RSO made all the difference in creating a horrible experience. Dale was blatantly prejudiced (I hate to say, racist?)... he was doing his job and then some. A shooter two lanes down shot a few rounds at rapid succession, less than one sec per trigger pull. He was commended! The whole time I was there I was helping my kids and I shot one clip. One shot every 2 seconds. I was yelled at in such fiery distain that all the lanes looked and stopped. What was the difference? I shot slower. I shot safely. My group was the only minority in the shop. In this current state of the world, it's not a good look. Or maybe it is? Even my kids asked what was wrong considering the other shooters firing off rounds faster than I. And it was their first time. Dale doesn't belong there. The rest of the staff is so wonderful. But they lost a customer and then some. read more

Jenna at hangtown fire is a great instructor for anyone interested in learning all aspects of gun ownership. As a person new to guns, shooting, ammo and most importantly gun safety I scheduled a private lesson with Jenna a month ago. My husband is a hunter and has guns in our home, in a safe. I wanted to be comfortable with guns in our home in case I should ever have to use them. I've had lessons each week since and already feel better about the use and safety of hand guns. I don't see my self hunting with riffles but will continue to learn and enjoy shooting for practice and safety thanks to Jenna's instruction and knowledge. She has helped me find a gun that fits my tiny hands and feels comfortable shooting. This has been a great experience at Hangtown range and recommend their staff and services. read more

The last time I'll ever go that place, the guy OLY said I had muzzle flip, and if I did that again, he would send me out the door, well I left immediately on my own, muzzle flip, try and shoot the gun I was shooting without some rise in the muzzle, what a joke, they watch you shoot on camera, no wonder there's hardly ever any cars in the parking lot, who could stand that place. The CCW Initial training went well. The trainers; Jenna and Stella were patient and very helpful. I hadn't done my CCW renewal in time and had to go through the initial training again. Went there on Saturday to teach my wife how to shoot. The staff was wonderful. John was very helpful is helping us with a semi-auto handgun rental for my wife. The RSO was Jenna and she gave my wife some pointers in addition to my instructions (telling your wife she's shooting high because her sight alignment wasn't right isn't the best thing...lol). I only got through two 10 round magazines of my new FN Five Seven as I was instructing my wife on her rental .22. Since we were the only ones at the range due to being closing time, Jenna was really helpful. My wife will be taking lessons from Jenna as it's better than from me. Jenna is a certified DOJ instructor and definitely knows her stuff. We'll be back for sure. Great range and staff! read more

My first time ever visiting a shooting range, indoor or otherwise. My first time firing a gun for that matter. Needless to say, I didn't make it five minutes into the experience before I crumbled! Definitely not for the faint of heart! With that said, the Honey enjoyed his time here, so that's what matters. For me, I was super impressed with the attention to safety this establishment has in place. I was also so appreciative of their non judgemental support when I clearly crumbled. They have a really nice lounge area where I was able bro decompress with coffee and water, while watching the honey on the closed captioned screens complete his shooting practice. read more

So glad this is where I'm beginning my firearm journey. I highly recommend the "Handgun for Beginners," course well...to beginners. It was extremely informative and gave me the confidence to walk into a gun shop without feeling like a newbie. The instructor Josh (who is also the manager,) does a great way of engaging your attention by allowing the students to ask questions and cater the course to the group. Although he's an expert in the field he doesn't speak in a condescending way or act like he's the ultimate source of whats right. Part of the course allowed me to fire a handgun correctly for the first time. I had shot a gun before but I had no idea what I was doing. Josh walked me step by step from picking up the firearm with proper grip to ultimately pulling the trigger. I was very anxious, but Josh calmed me down and explained taking the shot with a metaphor I understood. Initially I had set up an one on one training with him. To my surprise he actually waived the fee, and let me fire alone because I really just had to get use to firing my new firearm. Even without the fee he stuck around and helped me focus on the fundamentals to hit my target. This is the type of experience you'll get here at Hangtown Range. read more

I just got home from an absolutely terrible experience at Hangtown Range. My husband and I went to Hangtown Range today to shoot my new .357 magnum and a couple other handguns. I've been into the range once before many years ago. We are both signed up for a CCW course tomorrow and it was too rainy to just shoot on our property so we decided to go to the range. The staff in the front were super nice and helpful (Samantha and Jenna) and let us share a lane since it was busy. I started out with my .357 and went through the CCW course of fire 3, 7, and 10 yards. I shot 72 rounds and everything was going fine. I noticed there was an older gentleman with tattoos on his arms (not sure his name) who works there and he was helping a family who were clearly new shooters. Several times when I was reloading, I heard him yelling "no, no, no" "stop, not like that" "you can't do that" and so on. He was actually yelling and not in a nice or helpful way at the older woman who was obviously trying to learn how to shoot a handgun. This made me really nervous and I felt bad for her. If that was me, I would have walked out. I understand that its the RSO's job to instruct and ensure safety but instead of helping her he was just yelling. After I felt comfortable with my .357, my husband proceeded to practice with his 9mm and .40. Everything was fine. The last gun we went to shoot was MY Ruger LC .380. I'm not a huge fan of this gun but it is small and good for concealed carry. The trigger pull takes getting used to. At this point, the Range Instructor had stopped yelling at the woman and the man who was with her was shooting and the RSO left to walk around and sweep up the empty cartridges. About the time he got to the bay where we were, I had shot the .380 twice at 3 yards and both shots were on the bullseye. He comes up behind me and says, "No, no, no, stop. Let me show you the right way to hold it. You have your thumb in the wrong spot and you can get bit by the slide. It is a safety issue." He reaches for my gun, which is loaded and safety off since I'm shooting, takes it from me, does not put the safety on and proceeds to show me how to hold a handgun. Then stands over my shoulder and he wants to see me shoot it. So I hold it like he says, and I shoot low and to the right. Then I go to take another shot, and the bullet does not fire. He was so imposing standing over me that I felt nervous clearing the round because I was scared I was going to get yelled at. I set the gun down pointed down range and put on the safety. I went to ask my husband for help and as I was trying to explain to him the round did not fire, the RSO picks up my gun, takes the safety off, and pulls the trigger. Of course nothing happens. He drops the magazine and unloads the round. He looks at it and starts accusing my husband of bringing in a reloaded round. My husband told him, no we don't reload, that round came from that brand new box of Winchesters right there. The Range Instructors looks at the round and says, "Well, this is a bad round." Umm.... no sh**, it didn't fire, that's not our fault go complain to Winchester. Then he completely ignores me and turns to my husband to ask if he could load some of the Winchester rounds in the gun and shoot it. He loads 7 rounds into the magazine and shoots 5 of them and then complains that he doesn't like the trigger pull. Excuse me? Why is this a** shooting my gun? Why did he need to shoot 5 rounds of my ammo? That gun is registered to ME not my husband ME. He did not ask my permission to shoot my gun. He just assumed the gun was my husband's. Because women are inferior shooters and aren't gun owners? FYI, I own 10 guns. I don't know what his deal was. And yes, I know I have an unconventional grip. I am aware and have shot many times with that grip and I do great. I have never been "bit by the slide" and after he left, I went back to how I hold MY gun, and proceeded to shoot 7 rounds at 3 yards, 7 yards, and 10 yards and 18 of the 21 shots were in the bullseye of the target with a gun that is notoriously difficult to shoot accurately. I have very small hands and a traditional grip doesn't give me control of the pistol. I couldn't help but notice that this male chauvinist only commented on women and was buddy buddy alpha male with all the guys there. He was a total a**hole. This sort of misogynist male authoritative attitude would make most women never want to touch a gun again. I will NEVER EVER go back to Hangtown Range and I caution all women if you decide to go there to shoot. Otherwise, all the other employees seemed nice and the range was clean and well kept but this was such a terrible experience, because of this one individual, I will not go back. read more

We had been shooting less than a year ago, but totally forgot your basic setup for any kind of firearm. Olie sat there with us, took all questions patiently, and made some pretty great conversation. I went here on a Saturday Oct. 24 with 5 of my friends, not busy when we went around 10:30am, not busy meaning we did not have to wait for a lane to open. First thing I noticed was the inside of the store was clean. Staff were friendly, they do not have that "I can't be bothered attitude", they were awesome. No condescending tone, No helicopter staff during our range time, the range safety officer was friendly, even gave some tips to one of us who was a new shooter, but again they did not do the hovering, which is great, because it allows you to just relax and enjoy. Another plus, was even after we left around 12:30pm it still was relatively not packed (only one out of the ten lanes was empty) which is a surprise for a Saturday for me. The range price was great, if I remember correctly the price we paid was per lane, not per person. If you are in the area and looking for a place to do some range time (they even have an archery range), consider this place. To the staff of Hangtown Range and to its business owner, the good attitude and helpfulness of your staff are what attracts business, please keep it up. I would definitely come back here. It's a hidden place to have fun in Placerville, California. Super friendly staff compared to no other place that I went to. Hangtown Range is so clean from the lobby and inside the range. Well lit, and they have a medical air purification system inside the range, so you don't need to wear a mask. And the best thing that me and my friends love is the staff.
