However, since the new owner, Ms. Gomez took over, we have seen a significant decline in the quality of teaching, a persistent lack of individualized attention, and a significant increase in class sizes that compromised the learning environment of the students. The situation deteriorated to the point that two weeks ago we decided to withdraw our 9-year-old daughter from the program and enroll her in another, far better Taekwondo center in Folsom. The current ownership appears to prioritize increasing student volume over providing individualized attention. Students of different belt levels are frequently combined into the same classes, creating confusion for both students and parents. Additionally, the progression through belts and training milestones seems unnecessarily prolonged. They blame it to supposed deficiencies in students' "readiness" for belt testing, rather than acknowledging the impact of inconsistent teaching or insufficient oversight of their less experienced junior instructors. When we raised valid concerns about our daughter's lack of advancement and the quality of instruction she was receiving, the response from staff was dismissive and placed responsibility solely on the students and parents (e.g. suggesting that students were not practicing enough at home or that parents were not teaching them proper forms), rather than addressing the issues brought to their attention. Their current practice raises serious concerns about a potential conflict of interest, as unnecessary prolonged training directly increases the duration of monthly fees they collect from the students. When we questioned these delays and asked for clarification, they responded defensively and repeatedly, suggested enrolling in additional significantly more expensive private lessons. This clearly gave us the impression that the recommended solutions were financially motivated rather than acknowledging their teaching quality.

I've been training with Shotokan Karate of America's Foothill/Auburn dojo for close to a year and a…read morehalf. I love it! I'm really happy with my choice of this dojo and this organization. Even though it's been my first karate training, I can tell the vibe of the whole place is so much less commercial than a lot of the martial arts places I was looking at before I selected SKA. And SKA is a nonprofit, so the price is leaps and bounds better than other martial arts schools you'll find (I did research on that, too!). The people at our Foothill dojo are friendly and we sometimes have get-togethers outside of class/outside of karate events. Our instructor Enrique is fantastic, and our other seniors are extremely helpful too. It's a wonderful place to train! There's also more to enjoy that's unique about SKA: their twice-yearly special training events (optional but highly recommended), and the beautiful dojo down in the hills of Santa Barbara built by SKA's founder. An amazing place for members to visit if you get the chance!

He teaches my "cane-fu" class, which is more like practical self-defense for older people (who might happen to have a cane handy.) He and his son and another sensei teach my daughter's kenpo class, where they do learn kata and forms, but they always make sure you know what the moves are a response to. In fact, that's Stan's first question almost every time: "why are you doing this?" Hard to believe this quality of martial arts instruction exists in small-town Galt.

I haven't been to his dojo in downtown Galt, but he used to have classes in his backyard(or garage on rainy days) which was quite the experience. I remember one day, trying to do a form while he distracted our eyes with a water hose...haha. He didn't do that often but he was always trying to find new ways to mix things up for us. I really appreciated how different it was compared to the usual karate place, where you can see yourself doing forms in the mirrored walls, he emphasized body control- knowing where your foot is(without looking) so that you don't screw up the technique for example. I don't know how his classes are currently, but I think he provided great real world tactical self defense back then and have no doubts that he's still a great teacher. I wish I had stuck with it longer than I did.
