Mario is an amazing teacher and a great person, and his positive attitude has clearly rubbed off on his other instructors and his students. Canyon and Ryan also teach classes on a regular basis and while they each have their unique styles, you can definitely see Mario's influence on their teaching methods and techniques. There are also about 9 or 10 other black belts that train there if you need a question answered. The name Bruddas is appropriate because they really do make you feel like family.

The family business vibe that kept me for 6 years was minimal. The owner (Patrick) turned into a MAGA keyboard warrior. I avoided Patrick's classes because it was 45 min of stretching and 15 min of workout. Coach Kirby's classes kept me going since my strength gains were worth it (and you don't need to take your shoes off for strength training lol). There was no point in coming here after the last certified personal trainer quit their strength program and more women gradually left. I would rather drive more to train at a different gym (more than one Muay Thai & strength gyms exist in Sacramento) than come here. I don't mind the cost as long as I am in a clean facility and the vibe is worth it. The only reason they have one star left is for Coach P. - he is a good Muay Thai coach and a rockstar. I didn't really go to Coach Rocci's classes until last year, but the few times I did his music was the best for sparring. Pro tip: use a different personal FB account to post political content where gym members can't see them. Regardless of whether people agree/disagree with your views, there is a level of professionalism needed if you want to be a successful business owner.

Facilities are minimal - just a run down room with some mats in an old industrial complex. What you will find is one of the few black belts awarded in America by Rickson Gracie. Rickson was big on the basics, so we try to focus on traditional, fundamental Brazilian jiu jitsu and self defense, not the sport/tournament style. (Not that's there anything wrong with that, it's just a different approach.) I've been training here 6 years now, and we've got a really solid crew built up. As long as you have a good attitude and are willing to put in the effort, the mats are wide open for you. We're also very informal here, no titles, no bowing, lining up in ranks, etc. Respect, definitely, just not through formalities, and I prefer it that way. Lastly, rates are very affordable, lower than any other BJJ school I've seen, plus discounts for doing automatic transfers, and no contracts or fees.

The coaches are plentiful, accessible and very knowledgeable, who have even given extra time to help our kids when needed. Our kids have excelled because of their care and the care of helpful students. I have often discussed with other parents of the students about how good the community is at CHECKMAT. But a new reason was realized this past weekend at the last JJWL Tourney in Stockton--The owners demonstrate their care and connection with their students by ensuring there is always someone with them! See I signed up my boys late to this tourney, sucks because I missed out on a cool rash guard ;) but for this tourney my boys had staggered start times so I got to see more matches while waiting for their appearances. I started to notice something that was not apparent to me from the last few tourneys we attended (in all past events my boys went at same start times but different mats so I was always running back and forth). Some kid competitors do not have coaches sitting in the chairs supporting them! I found this astonishing because those kids are out there competing and there was no support. I also noticed that every Beda BJJ kid competitor had a coach, sitting there while in action and also before and after. This is what truly sets Beda apart in my opinion.

My family and I visited for the first time today so my daughter could check out a class before deciding if she wanted to join. Coaches Patrick and Jenna were beyond friendly and were nothing short of kind and patient with helping my daughter as were the other students in her class. They offer a kids class 3 days a week for $150 a month - you can go as many of the 3 days as you'd like so you essentially could get 12 classes a month for $150. That is a great deal! They also offer plenty of adult classes and even an open mat day! The inside was very clean and had 2 separate sitting areas - they also have a huge gym area. My daughter loved the class and we will be signing up so she can attend officially! I highly recommend Capitol Jiu Jitsu!
