    Beginners Curriculum
    Ted C.

I've gone to a handful of different schools as a visitor while I travel for work and Capitol was one of my main highlights. I e-mailed before hand if I could drop in and was referred to the schedule and to come when I could. I figured I could drop in for an hour, call it a night and get some food before my flight home the next morning. I saw they had a beginner class from 5-6 and I figured I could jump into that and leave. I walked in a little early-always a good idea just so you could get the admin stuff out of the way so you can be fully ready when class starts. Professor Gibran walked me through the facility and the waiver process. He had another student ask a question so he left me to change in one and jump into class. The instructor for the beginner class walked me through the beginner curriculum, it was pretty thorough and organized well; so much so that I took a picture of for my own review later. I was paired with a student who was pretty new so it was nice to be able to slow down and go over the finer points of techniques. I figured I would head out afterwards but there was another class right after and Professor Gibran somehow convinced me to stay. I think it was something like, 'come on, you won't regret it.' During the drilling part I asked if it this was a certain position. His response still rings in my head, "from my understanding," and then he showed me the difference between what I thought we were doing vs what we were actually doing. the humility he had in answering though was what got me. On top of that he was a very tough roll and he got the better of me when I thought he had given up an advantageous position. He baited me into it masterfully. After class, I asked about a drop-in or mat fee and he just waved me off. I ended up buying a t-shirt which I proudly rock from my visit. If I were to move to Sacramento this would definitely be my training home.

I would like to thank Coach Gibran for welcoming Alex and I into his school. Great instructor, I loved the layout and the students and curriculum. If you are in the Sacramento area and looking to train or if you're looking to start some self defense classes, you can't find better than Capitol Jiu-JiuJitsu!

Had a wonderful drop in this morning at Capitol Jiu Jitsu in Sacramento. One of the nicest gyms I've ever seen, with brick walls, wood paneling, and even stain glass windows. This gym is fully equipped with showers, changing rooms, sauna, and fully setup weight room. Most importantly, it's just a great place to train. Nice folks, great teaching, sharp technique, and awesome rolls. I couldn't have had a better start to my day. Everyone treated me like I was part of the gym. I emailed ahead of time and the owner, Gibral, was super responsive and professional. The waiver was easy to find and to complete. Also, my Achilles heel.....their merchandise is so sick. I ended up getting both a rash guard and a T-shirt (I used our designated grocery card so that Wendy hopefully won't notice). If you're living in Sac, or even just visiting, check this place out. #traineverywhere #traineveryday #trainwitheveryone

Stoked after class in this awesome space.

The 6 am crew lead by Kelvin was very welcoming. It was a very friendly atmosphere in one of the coolest looking BJJ gyms I have encountered. The mats were obviously very clean if a bit rough (skinned my toe lol) and Kelvin cleaned directly after class. The teaching was through and all went together, and refined details along the way. I liked the progressive teaching of show, drill, situational drills and then rolls starting from that position allowing the student to immediately try what was taught.

I asked if I was able to try a few classes before I have to sign a contract. He said how it works is that everyone has to watch one class first, then they could participate in the next class. He said tonight was a great night to come in because it's women's only night. I got there early at 5:30 because Marcos said that's around the time to get there. I assumed that was because I needed to sign a waiver and maybe chat about my martial arts background. But ten minutes after I got there a women pulled up, I smiled at her and she just looked angry. She got out of her car and said "What, are you waiting for me?" I mean I don't even know who she was, so that was awkward and made me feel unwelcome. Then she unlocked the door and I started to bring in my scooter (Marcos already said I could) and she said "Oh sure, you can bring that in too!" It was condescending and made me feel even more unwelcome. I guess I should have explained that I did already get permission and was respectful about it, but my brain just shuts down when people are hostile. She then then tried to get me to sign a contract immediately. She said it was so that I didn't have to when I came back next. I said but I don't know any of the prices yet and don't have enough info, can I wait for later? She said oh don't worry about it, leave the rest blank but make sure you sign it. I told her that two other places did that to me before Eastern Ways and Extreme martial arts. I signed a blank contract and they started my contract over and changed the terms and it was my fault. I learned my lesson. So I told her no, I will wait to sign it until it's filled in with what I choose. She seemed even more hostile after that. Just super bad vibes. I'm giving 3 stars because I'm sure most people there are amazing and Marcos seemed great, but this woman rubbed me the wrong way and that was a huge huge red flag. I won't ever go back, I didn't even stay, I ended up grabbing my scooter and getting the heck out of there.

Up until this time I hadn't not heard of Logic, and am just recently becoming more familiar with the area as a whole. With them being in a smaller plaza it might be easy to miss them, but there's plenty of foot traffic in this area so you can easy come upon Logic by chance as well. My first impression was "Man, this is a really nice spot", with Logic's clean and modern white color scheme, and the natural wood finish look of their benches; makes for great appeal. While they provide a large area for mat space, there's also a smaller gym/weights area behind that. So you both workout and or train. There's also a ice hangout spot in the main entrance area, where you'll notice a Logic swag area which is a nice touch when you first walk in. Talking with Chris (owner & main instructor), we learned Logic is fairly new and coming up on their 2nd anniversary at their location. But they appear to have a good foundation of students; adults & children alike. Overall: Logic was a great spot to train, with a very welcoming owner and team.

In that time, I've trained all over the country and experienced a wide range of schools--but Waza BJJ stands out in every way. The owner, Derek Damano, is the real deal. He earned his black belt in 2006 from world champion Casio Werneck, and it shows in every class he teaches. On top of that, Derek is a Division 1 wrestler and has placed at multiple world-level international BJJ competitions. He's an elite athlete with an unparalleled depth of knowledge in grappling, both gi and no-gi, and one of the most well-rounded instructors you'll ever meet. Waza is home to a strong team of high-level black belts, and every assistant instructor brings their own flavor of excellence. The kids program is flourishing--the coaches are amazing, and the kids absolutely love being there. The environment is welcoming, structured, and fun. Beyond the instruction, the vibe at Waza is something special. Derek himself is probably one of the coolest guys in Jiu-Jitsu--laid-back, calm, funny, and just genuinely great to be around. He sets the tone for the entire academy. The facility is gorgeous--huge mat space, multiple bathrooms and changing areas, a clean waiting area for families, a kids' zone, and even a small cardio corner with machines for a quick workouts. Whether you're brand new to Jiu-Jitsu, looking for an amazing program for your kids, or already a black belt looking to sharpen your game, Waza BJJ is one of the best places you'll ever train. I personally love this place.
