Very cool Jiu Jitsu studio! Located in East Sacramento by the old Muzio Bakery! The building is vintage mixed with industrial with lots of exposed brick inside and out. My family and I visited for the first time today so my daughter could check out a class before deciding if she wanted to join. Coaches Patrick and Jenna were beyond friendly and were nothing short of kind and patient with helping my daughter as were the other students in her class. They offer a kids class 3 days a week for $150 a month - you can go as many of the 3 days as you'd like so you essentially could get 12 classes a month for $150. That is a great deal! They also offer plenty of adult classes and even an open mat day! The inside was very clean and had 2 separate sitting areas - they also have a huge gym area. My daughter loved the class and we will be signing up so she can attend officially! I highly recommend Capitol Jiu Jitsu! read more

I've gone to a handful of different schools as a visitor while I travel for work and Capitol was one of my main highlights. I e-mailed before hand if I could drop in and was referred to the schedule and to come when I could. I figured I could drop in for an hour, call it a night and get some food before my flight home the next morning. I saw they had a beginner class from 5-6 and I figured I could jump into that and leave. I walked in a little early-always a good idea just so you could get the admin stuff out of the way so you can be fully ready when class starts. Professor Gibran walked me through the facility and the waiver process. He had another student ask a question so he left me to change in one and jump into class. The instructor for the beginner class walked me through the beginner curriculum, it was pretty thorough and organized well; so much so that I took a picture of for my own review later. I was paired with a student who was pretty new so it was nice to be able to slow down and go over the finer points of techniques. I figured I would head out afterwards but there was another class right after and Professor Gibran somehow convinced me to stay. I think it was something like, 'come on, you won't regret it.' During the drilling part I asked if it this was a certain position. His response still rings in my head, "from my understanding," and then he showed me the difference between what I thought we were doing vs what we were actually doing. the humility he had in answering though was what got me. On top of that he was a very tough roll and he got the better of me when I thought he had given up an advantageous position. He baited me into it masterfully. After class, I asked about a drop-in or mat fee and he just waved me off. I ended up buying a t-shirt which I proudly rock from my visit. If I were to move to Sacramento this would definitely be my training home. read more

This review is only based on my initial phone call with one of the owners. I've recently developed an interest in Muay Thai and have been reaching out to local gyms to learn more. I came across CJJ and noticed it had great reviews about the coaches and classes, so I decided to call for more information. Since I'm new to the sport, I asked a few basic questions about the trial classes, specifically what they involve, what type of workouts or programs are offered for muay thai, and what a beginner might expect ("Can you describe a class workout such as warm up, focuses, etc). Unfortunately, the individual I spoke with did not provide welcoming or helpful information. When I asked about what the classes were like, she giggled and said that "the coaches do a little bit of everything," but did not elaborate. I rephrased my questions a few times, hoping for more clarity, but each time she laughed and gave similarly vague responses. This was disappointing, especially considering she mentioned being one of the owners. Ultimately, I was told that the only way to find out what the classes are like is to come in and do the trial period. While that may be true, I expected a more professional and informative first impression especially from one of the owners. read more

I was on a work trip and I wanted to train at school that was close to my hotel. After sifting through some schools I found one, Capitol Jiu Jitsu. This school looks exactly how it feels, welcoming! When I walked in Coach Justin welcomed me and showed me where to find things. When I was stretching, I spoke to a few of the members and they were all great. The class was lead by the owner and Gibran Maciel and he too was welcoming and we had a great roll. I highly recommend this school for locals AND visitors. Had a wonderful drop in this morning at Capitol Jiu Jitsu in Sacramento. One of the nicest gyms I've ever seen, with brick walls, wood paneling, and even stain glass windows. This gym is fully equipped with showers, changing rooms, sauna, and fully setup weight room. Most importantly, it's just a great place to train. Nice folks, great teaching, sharp technique, and awesome rolls. I couldn't have had a better start to my day. Everyone treated me like I was part of the gym. I emailed ahead of time and the owner, Gibral, was super responsive and professional. The waiver was easy to find and to complete. Also, my Achilles heel.....their merchandise is so sick. I ended up getting both a rash guard and a T-shirt (I used our designated grocery card so that Wendy hopefully won't notice). Full disclosure - Capitol Jiu Jitsu has been my first exposure to martial arts; and this place has made me seriously regret waiting so long - the experience here so far has been incredible. Gibran and Justin (Muay Thai) have made me and my son feel so welcome. The instruction that my son receives is top notch and he feels like he walks away from every session having learned something new and full of joy. The sense of community here is outstanding. I'm not sure how other Jiu Jitsu/Muay Thai gyms are, but this place is awesome and I am looking forward to getting involved myself and to being members here with my son for years to come. The 6 am crew lead by Kelvin was very welcoming. It was a very friendly atmosphere in one of the coolest looking BJJ gyms I have encountered. The mats were obviously very clean if a bit rough (skinned my toe lol) and Kelvin cleaned directly after class. The teaching was through and all went together, and refined details along the way. I liked the progressive teaching of show, drill, situational drills and then rolls starting from that position allowing the student to immediately try what was taught. read more

I went to a couple open mats and all the guys are kind and welcoming. Stopped in one day I had off and told them I was just coming because I had the day off. They let me do a session no charge. Also I prefer this gym over a couple of the other gyms in the area. They roll with consideration and are still tough. If I where in the area regularly this would be my go to BJJ gym! I've had an awesome time learning at Capitol Jiu Jitsu. Having been to a few different schools, they are very beginner friendly with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. There's a real community feel that extends to everyone that comes in the door. I frequent the beginner class at 5pm, and the techniques are very digestible and quick to apply. Coach Gibran is a pleasant teacher. He is forward at times but if you're interested in learning then you will pick up the information quickly. Gibrans instruction on small important details of technique is always on point,so when I'm on the mat and "rolling", those small details that I missed improve my game helping me get up to speed. I became a member of the team 2 weeks later.Gibran and ESBJJ instantly welcomes you as a brother or sister. and someone who is a lil over weight and over 40, some of training can be a little tough.But you can always count on the team and Gibran to push you through the "suck" motivating you every step of the way. I had no prior experience to BJJ before I started with Gibron and Capitol Jiu Jitsu (formly East Sac BJJ), about 5 months ago. I had dropped into and called a few other places in the Sacramento area before finding this spot. Gibron was very honest and upfront with everything from schedule and pricing, which was something I really much appreciated. From the first day I knew this was where I was going to sign up. Gibron was incredibly kind, as were the rest of his students. I immediately felt like I had been apart of their community for years. Another aspect that set Gibron and his cohort apart was how well they communicated what they were teaching. Some of the other gyms I tried, the instructors were knowledgeable for sure, but they seemed to have difficulty explaining the moves and positions in a way that made sense to a beginner like myself. Gibron and the other coaches were very articulate, very patient and found ways to communicate what they were trying to say, so that everyone was on the same page. Another aspect that I greatly appreciated was that no one at this gym has a huge ego. No one is trying to show how much better they are than you by unnecessarily choking you out in 3 seconds. Everyone there understood that I was new, and worked with me to teach me the new moves and positions. There are all levels of belts working out here and all of them have been more than helpful and willing to assist me. My wife also signed up at the same time as I did. Being a female in a predominantly male dominated sport, did have her a bit worried. The crew at Capitol quickly put these apprehensions to rest. Everyone treated her with the same courtesy and respect as they would treat everyone else. There has never been an issue. If you are a female reading this review and feeling hesitant, I can assure you, you will be more than fine training at Capitol. Unfortunately, I was offered a new job out of state and will have to be leaving Capitol BJJ. If I was staying in the area I would be a member for life. If I ever swing back through this part of the country, you can bet your ass I'll make sure I drop in to say hello to the crew. I stop in from time-to-time to take their NoGi classes on Thursday evenings. The class starts with traditional Grappling warm ups, which I feel are crucial to your development. Followed by stand up/wrestling drills, guard passes, and submissions. The class tends to have students with some sort of grappling experience in sports outside of Jiujitsu, which I feel helps the development of the group. My favorite part is the take down drills and live training. Highly recommend for anyone looking for self defense and a fun work out. read more

I've trained in many different gyms but haven't met any instructors quite like Gibran. He really takes the time to ensure everyone understands what he is teaching and why its important. Many instructors will teach a certain move, let you drill, and move on to the next one. He takes the time to explain if you are struggling or are new to BJJ.
