I am used to bubble tea chains around the GTA. It is rare that I can find an independent bubble tea and dessert place that I love. Don't get me wrong. There's nothing wrong with chains. Sometimes, it's nice to see a local business do its own thing, which makes it stand out. Hangout is such an establishment. After a delicious lunch, Jennifer and I braved the heat by getting into her car and driving a few blocks over instead of slowly making our way and looking like we had run a marathon. The establishment is spacious. You can spend hours playing board games alone. The assortment is at the back and it's extensive. I loved seeing a couple of arcade machines. If Pac-Man were there, I would be there all day. Pro: I would be loving the air conditioning. Con: I'd have carpal tunnel syndrome. There are yummy desserts and snacks here. Although the cakes and pretzels looked good, I couldn't fit any of that in my full tummy. I went with a large white peach tea. The base is jasmine green tea. I was asked whether I wanted anything else. I opted for coconut jelly. My mind was blown when the helpful woman at the counter asked me what flavour of coconut jelly and I had six to choose from. What?! That was a first for me. I went with lychee coconut jelly. I paid with cash. There appeared to be a machine that accepts credit cards. I'm not sure about debit, though. We sat down and chatted. I absolutely loved my tea. The peach flavour hit the spot on a hot day. I loved the lychee coconut jelly. I will never look at coconut jelly the same way. I'd love to come back here to snack and sip some more tea. It's a gem of a place and I'm glad that we hung out at Hangout. (273)

4 stars out of 5 for: - our bubble teas order but the avocado smoothie was more ice than avocado & had some skin pieces - appreciated the array of cards, board games available for patrons to use for as long as they want - nice open space -- accented w art work from Remix @ Somerset - convenient location

We had a lot of fun attending our last Yelp event for 2016 here - hanging out at Hangout! Holly O did a great job setting up a corner of this restaurant for our festivities!! And it was great seeing everyone. As for the location itself, the restaurant is nice and bright, and a reasonably big space. Even the washrooms were nice and clean - and event smelled good! There was only 1 person working the counter, but she could have used some help as it was busy enough. We ordered coffee and deserts: cheese cake and chocolate truffle. These were really nicely set out on the plate, and quite tasty, although I think I might have enjoyed the truffle a bit more than the cheesecake, which is really saying something, coming from me! Others in our party ordered shaved ice. I'd never had this before, and was pleased with the taste of the small sample I got. The latté I had was a little different than I'm used to, as it's made with condensed milk instead of regular milk. This made it a bit sweeter than I usually have it; but still it was nice though. I enjoyed my visit to the Hangout, and would feel comfortable coming back. For this event though, I especially enjoyed the company! Thank you Holly O for putting this together! Happy holidays everyone, whatever you are celebrating!

Coconut shaved ice with lychee jelly and mochies.

I'm updating to give this place 5 stars. I came back today with my parents. My mom is obsessed with this place. She couldn't wait to go back after our last visit. Everything in my previous review still stands except they have gotten even better! Last time my mom said her red beans were too hard, this time they were softer and she loved them. Also this time the presentation was really pretty. You can see my pictures. On our second visit my parents got the taro shaved ice with red beans and mochies, and I got the coconut shaved ice with lychee jelly and mochies. You can see the shaved iced was all wavy and it looked like a flower. So pretty! We were served by I think the owner (a young guy). He was really nice. When my mom came to tell him that she felt her shaved ice was not a sweet as last time, he poured on some syrup for her for free. Service was excellent. Please refer to my original review for more details. This place is really great and a wonderful addition to the dessert scene here in Ottawa. I can't wait to go back and try their Almond flavour shaved ice :)

Great place to "hangout" with friends. I liked that they had board games, foosball and arcade games available. The bubbletea was delicious, with lots of options for flavours and toppings! I got the white peach tea with no sugar, pearls and grass jelly. I was surprised to find out that the green tea has no caffeine in it, which was exactly what I wanted. My friend got the roasted oolong milk tea with lychee jelly. Service was friendly. Would come back another time to try the shaved ice.

Shaved ice Op Cute staff helped me customize it

Amazing shaved ice Asian lounge in Ottawa Chinatown. We were welcome by cute staff. The place has nice K-pop song, baby foot table and board/ card games. The lady helped me customized shaved ice . I believe it was green tea and vanilla milk. We added mango fruits, pudding, grass jelly, etc. Condensed milk is a must. Amazing. Shaved ice well done , I tried many of them in Toronto /Montreal and this one is pretty decent. Chinatown in Ottawa is sad LOL You could say that hangout makes it more alive. Definitely coming back. Good place for a cute date.

Orange Creamcicle Brick Toast

So I have been to Hangout three times now. Originally, the appeal for me was that I was told they had exceptional bubble tea, also that they offered patbingsu (shaved ice). I'd never had patbingsu before so I was looking forward to trying it. A Korean friend of mine said it definitely wasn't the best she'd ever had, but what do I know? I loved it! Today, however, I ordered a hot taro bubble tea and the creamcicle brick toast. The brick toast totally surpassed my expectations. Absolutely delicious. I'd had brick toast before, but this is on a whole other level. The presentation, the taste... amazing! Aside from the great desserts, they offer some board games and a foosball table, so it really is a decent "hangout." It's been quiet every time I've been because it's still fairly new, but I'm hoping it picks up soon!

My friends and I tried this place back when it was very new. Ottawa lacks shaved ice desserts, so we were pretty excited! The quality is not the same as say, Toronto, but still pretty solid. We ordered a few different drinks and shaved ice, and played some board games. The place was pretty empty, but hopefully now they are busier! They have quite a few varieties of the shaved ice so I will be back to try more.

I really like Hangout. I've introduced it to a few of my friends whom also seem to like it. So far, I enjoy Hangout's menu the most out of all the Bubble tea places I've tried in Ottawa. I have tried the shaved ice, my order was Vanilla Milk with Almond slices and Mango fruit jams. Delicious! I was surprised because I'd never seen this offered in a bubble tea café before. It is obviously not the same as what you would experience in South Korea, but I enjoyed it a lot. As for bubble tea, I always have milk tea with tapioca pearls. Every time I've had so far, the pearls were soft and delicious, and the milk tea tasted great. I tried mango and vanilla, both were delicious. Mango definitely the best! The décor is cute and spacious, they offer a few board games and a foosball table free of charge. Will definitely return in the near future!

There are a lot of options in their menu. The sitting area is also an arcade room. Free wifi. The shaved ice is a big portion. I would recommend this to everyone who loves asian desserts! Whoo hoo, I would come back again.

Strawberry brick toast

They definitely make the worst bubble tea in Ottawa here, but everything else is good. They offer many strange flavours that intrigued me and there's a reason why I've never seen them anywhere else before. One sip of my tropical bubble tea and I wanted to throw it away. However, their shaved ice and brick toasts are very delicious, and everyone I know, myself inclufed love this place for the board games, free WiFi and atmosphere.

Wow. I was craving soft serve ice cream and decided to come here. To my surprise, I misinterpreted a photo of ice cream topped with whipped cream as soft serve ice cream. Despite this, I still wanted to try the brick toast with strawberry, icecream, whipped cream and etc. Although I was still alittle sad about the lack of soft serve ice cream the dessert perked me right up. It was friggen delicious. The bread used for the toast has a crispy and slightly flaky crust. The inside of the bread was eggy, sweet and just marvelous. The toppings all went well together and for some reason, I think I tasted some coconut. I'll take this over soft serve ice cream any day. The only concern I had was that there was only one person working the counter. He didn't even seem to notice me come in. However upon leaving there were 3 people. Aside from this aspect, I could even hear my neighboring tables saying 'man, he really knows what he's doing with this bubble tea'. So guess what I'm trying next ;)

The shaved ice is in a plastic container and I didn't ask for to go
Peony N.

Ok, it's not what I expected or what I ordered had come out that look like one of those yummy pictures on Yelp, this is what I got. The shaved ice is in a plastic container, looks so bad and weird. How come I got this instead of those nice plate like the ones on Yelp? I didn't ask for a to go The shaved ice is ok not so great, and the Thai tea is bad, it's weird, I can't even described it. If you come from a place that has all kind of great Asian snacks similar like this then don't even bother to come here, not worth a try. I'm so disappointed.

I walked in not really knowing what to order or what to expect, but luckily I was the only customer at the time, so I had the chance to take it all in. * Service: The staff were friendly and helpful, which made the experience easy and welcoming. * Portion size: The cakes are huge! Honestly, I think a smaller size option would be great, but if you're hungry or sharing, the big portion works. * Texture & taste: Don't expect it to be like a BeaverTail--it's closer to the texture of a freshly cooled scone. The mix of crunchy outside, soft inside, and the added nuts made it really enjoyable. Overall, I'd definitely recommend trying it out if you're curious about chimney cakes. It's a fun treat, different from the usual Ottawa sweets, and worth experiencing at least once!

The Long Version: I had chimney cakes for the first time in 2015 at the short-lived Chimney Cake Bake 'N' Roll store in Bayshore Mall. It was thick and fluffy and tasty. The one I recently had at Chimnies was a bit thinner and less fluffy, but still enjoyable. Chimnies recently opened up on Bank St. I went in November 2024 and the man working there told me they've been open for 2 months. I'm thrilled to have a chimney cake store in Ottawa again, as we had none after Chimney Cake Bake 'N' Roll closed down. Chimnies was having a BOGO (buy one get one free) deal in UberEats: $8.50 for a Biscoff Chimney Cake. I ordered this for pickup. My husband and I usually like to share our food, but thanks to this deal, we each had our own. He finished his, but I found a whole one a bit too much for me in one sitting, so I saved about a third of it for later. The Biscoff Chimney Cake had Biscoff cookie crumbs on the outside (Biscoff butter cookies with a hint of caramel) and a Biscoff spread on the inside. The man working there was courteous. It's takeout only. There is no seating inside. Street parking only. (204)

After learning that the latter only accepted cash, I checked out Amore Gelato. There was a bit of a lineup, so I knew that it was a good sign. There was a mom in front of me with her kids. We had a nice chat after she specifically said to her kids that they'd get exactly one scoop of ice cream. "We can't have them go on a sugar high and crash," I said, smiling. "Exactly. I'm getting two scoops, though" she said, laughing. This joint offers options for everyone. You can get a variety of gelato flavours that are made fresh every day. Gelato has dairy in it. If you're like me and want a dairy-free option, sorbetto is a nice alternative. I had overheard the conversation between the woman behind the counter and a couple about to pay for their treats: "Is it cash only?" the woman asked. "No, that's the Crazy Moose. We accept all cards and cash," the female staffer said. One word: yes! This same female staffer helped me out with my order. I got the following sorbetto flavours in a cup: - Guava - Lychee I paid with a credit card. I also tipped, thankful that I could use plastic to pay. I thanked her and left with my frozen dessert. There were a handful of little tables with chairs inside the store, but they were all taken. Instead, I went out in the hot weather and found outdoor seating. Luckily, there is a rather large tree that provided a lot of shade. There was also a breeze, so I wasn't sweating buckets. I loved my sorbetto. The guava and lychee were reminiscent of having Vitasoy as a kid. I loved these flavours. They were captured perfectly in the sorbetto, which wasn't all that sweet. The sorbetto scoops were refreshing and enjoyable to consume on a hot July afternoon. There were pigeons that looked like they were innocently befriending me. They were actually waiting for me to make a klutzy move. If I had dropped my sorbetto, they'd feast. They never got any of mine. I finished all of it. So good! It was nice to people-watch as I had my sorbetto. If you have the time to stop and enjoy things in ByWard Market, come here for a scoop of yumminess and savour it. It's a great place. I'd return in a heartbeat. (310)

He recommended the mint chocolate, passion fruit and stracciatella. Since I was feeling something more refreshing, we had the passion fruit! It was super tasty and had the right level of tartness (not overly sweetened or artificial), and had a smooth consistency. While it was a bit pricy at $6.25 for a scoop. I'd definitely go back and try some of their other flavours since the quality was quite good

The Short Version: Bubble tea meets yogurt. So delicious!…read more The Long Version: Hi Yogurt is a Canadian company that sells yogurt drinks, bubble tea-style. They've been around since 2021 but their first Ottawa store just opened in September 2025. I stumbled across them while looking on Google Maps for new businesses in town. I popped by during their soft opening (September 12, 2025) and they had 3 specials going on: buy one get one half-price, buy 2 get 1 free, or get $2 off a single drink. Since I was only getting one drink, I opted for the $2 off, but the other 2 offers are a better deal. I got the Oat Cereal Yogurt ($6.99) and added Matcha Mochi for an additional $0.69. With the special my drink was only $5.68. I initially wanted to get no added sugar, but the cashier cautioned against it because she said it would be really sour, so I opted for the second lowest sugar amount which is 30% (the other options are half, regular and extra). I am glad that I did because 30% was the perfect amount of sweetness for my tastes. I agree that no sugar would have been too sour. I think if I had ordered a drink with fruit in it like mango or berries, no sugar would have been fine, but the oats are not sweetened and the mochi is not that sweet either. The yogurt was thick, rich and tart. It was so good. The oats gave it a nice chew and the mochi had a fun silky texture (note that the mochi is like liquid mochi in bubble tea drinks and not chewy mochi pieces like in Bingsoo or toppings found at those frozen yogurt places). I thoroughly enjoyed my drink and looking forward to returning to try their other drinks. Service was courteous and helpful. The decor is bright and cheery. There's a stuffed llama in the store. There's a bit of seating on high stools but it's mostly a takeout place. Street parking only. Review #180 (2025)

After, I circled back and stopped to use their washroom. (It's clean!) Then I stepped inside. The first thing I saw was a display case with many delicious-looking pastries. I asked about one (the opéra): what it was and how much it cost. Prices aren't listed for all (or most) items on the menu, but the person on the other side of the counter was very friendly and helpful. The bistro has a long list of beverages, and you can order the coffee beverages iced as well. Myself, I ordered an iced mocha and a small cup of moosetracks ice cream (my favourite). I think the coffee needed more ice, but the ice cream was creamy and delicious. The patio is really nice. It is right on the canal, clean, and quiet (even with plenty of folks seated). It is set between the paved path and the water, separated by a row of raised flower beds. Most tables have umbrellas--lowered today due to the wind. It is a wonderfully comfortable space. Amenities also include a napkin dispenser, an aesthetically subtle trash/recycling box, and two water bowls for dogs. All in all, I am so happy I found this little stop on my walk. It is also right off of Queen Elizabeth Driveway, and there are both steps and a sloped paved path that makes the bistro easily accessible. It's pricy, but the ambience and scenery make it worth it.
