And the food is amazing as I watched plates go by our table! I had a bar pie with Anchovies, and the wife had Broccoli Rabe! We stopped in for lunch on Mother's Day and had a wonderful experience. The interior has a charming atmosphere, though we opted to sit out on the patio. The music on the patio set a great tone, our waiter was friendly and attentive, and the service was impressively prompt. Best of all, the food was delicious. Hangar 21 is fun for more than a quick bite on a night you just want to go out. We went a little late around 8 on last Friday night, and there was a singer on his break, so there were lights flashing so it was festive. We were seated quickly and found the waitstaff friendly and attentive. We had our drinks quickly. We both ordered from the specials. I don't recall waiting too long & our food was hot. The singer started & they let us move so we could see him. As for the food, I ordered the crab cakes and i enjoyed them. My meal came with rice and veggies. Overall I loved my dinner and almost ate all of my crab cakes. I loved the smoky flavor of the rice. My hubby wasn't as pleased with his rib eye steak. It was on the fatty side and had a gravy on it that didn't taste fresh. The dessert we ordered, a peanut butter chocolate ice cream bomb, was fun and delish. Overall, we enjoyed the evening and may return to try something else from their large menu. The entertainment was a fun bonus, though he does cater to a certain local age group. First let me say that it pains me to make this review. I want to see restaurants succeed. However, the experience we had was just wrong on so many levels. I literally walked out saying that I would be posting this review. This was our first time back since the change of ownership. We used to frequent this establishment quite often. We will never go back and would not recommend this to anyone we know. The restaurant was mostly empty and I can see why, considering the other restaurant in town is always crowded. To begin with, my husband ordered a beer that was flat. He was brought another one which was equally bad. I ordered chicken francaise with angel hair. My husband ordered a chicken parm sandwich. I was supposed to get soup, but our meal came out first. Not a huge deal, because I took it to go..but it's just another issue along with the others. My husband said the bread tasted like it was stale or previously frozen. My meal was ok. Waitress came by to ask if the second beer was ok and my husband told her no that it was just flat. She did not take it away, even though my husband said he would just drink his water. Then the bill came. The beer was still on the bill-whatever. More egregious was the fact that my meal was 4 dollars higher than what was on the menu. When we questioned it, the waitress told us that the kitchen told her that it was a four dollar upcharge because I ordered angel hair. My meal came with pasta. Every restaurant I've ever been to generally serves angel hair with chicken francaise. At no point were we ever told there was an upcharge for angel hair. How absurd! Any other restaurant would have taken the beer away and taken it off the bill and no restaurant I've ever been too would have charged more for ordering angel hair with a meal then usually comes with angel hair to begin with, especially without telling someone there would be an upcharge. read more

Hangar 21 Tavern is located in Downtown Lakehurst, and I had passed it many times before. I finally just went and tried it. They have both a bar and a dining area. While I usually prefer just to bring my own wine to Italian bistros in New Jersey, I took advantage of the bar. That was great for solo diners. The bartender was actually highly experienced. She made me the Sugar Cookie Martini, and it was her creation and the best part of the meal. The food is standard Jersey Shore Italian food, which is in line with the market in the area. It came with soup and better bread, too. I liked my meal, but it was not fabulous. The place has dimmer lighting and a slightly romantic feel, so it should be good for a date. But I think the whole family would enjoy it, too. read more

The 3.5 stars must be from regular bar people that never ate there.I can HONESTLY say that this was the worst meal I ever had in a resturant. It's diner-like with paper napkins and booths that could easily be wiped down- but weren't. We ordered 2 small prosectos, but they only had 1, so my husband ordered a $9 glass of wine which was warm.The arugala salad had way too much cheese on it.My husband ordered the pork chop and they were out. I ordered the flounder which was overly salty and more breaded than the wafer thin flounder.It was mushy, like it was frozen, then over cooked. The owner(I assume) came to our table and when we told her about these issues, she said "oh that's not right" but did NOTHING to make it right.When you spend over $100, you shouldn't go home hungry. Fried calamari with a light breading among the best in the area. Pizza with a nice thin crust so good. Italian hoagie on a sub bun excellent for lunch or anytime. Our first time to Hangar 21, and what a surprise!!!! The owner has updated the entire interior, and has a wonderful covered outdoor space for warmer weather. We ordered 2 entrees from the early bird menu, and were extremely happy with both. This restaurant has gone out of its way to accommodate vegetarian, and gluten free diners, a rare thing for local restaurants in our area. Our server, Kaitlyn, was very knowledgeable, and polite. Been to and ordered from Hangar 21 several times. No issues. The atmosphere is clean and comfortable. The food is great! Staff friendly. It is off the main road Rt 70, so unless local or reading reviews hard to know how great it is or see it. To answer the other yelper, it is called hangar 21 cause the Lakehurst base is near by and they have hangars. I like the name. Anyway, you won't be disappointed. I brought my brother to this restaurant for their prime rib night for his birthday and was so disappointed. I'm not sure I will ever go back. For his drink he simply ordered a beer that came in a bottle and requested a chilled glass which he got a glass off the shelf. Clearly the waitress should know what a difference between a chilled glasses and a regular glasses. If chilled glasses do not exist in this restaurant the patron should be made aware of that not just a regular glass. For appetizer, he ordered the spicy shrimp that they forgot to take the shell off of half of them so he was eating shells, not very appetizing. He ordered the prime rib dinner and was served the heel of the prime rib that was tough as nails, fake mashed potatoes and barely cooked vegetables that were clearly from frozen. Although the waitress did take the price of the dinner off the receipt, I didn't feel that was enough. I felt that should've been reported to the manager the chef the line person because it should never made it out of the kitchen. Clearly the waitress was much too young to even understand good customer service and should have had better oversight from the restaurant staff that were her seniors. I was so excited to go back to Hanger 21, our first experience was amazing! Unfortunately, second time was joke m. The younger server that was assisting behind the bar and with take out orders was rude, unprofessional and had no clue what she was doing. We asked for bread and had to wait and followed again. 20 minutes later, she brought the bread out, by that time we had already finished our meals. I replied that we no longer needed the bread. She replied with a snarky remark. Oh, well, I will will eat it, laughed and walked away. Also, we could not get drinks, due to shift changes and bartender sitting down drinking at the bar. A flavorful Italian panini with a small pasta salad included was $12 (you get to choose your side). As you enter, booths are to the left; tables to the right with a bar in the middle. This is only a few blocks from Route 70 and a convenient and reasonably priced stop for lunch or dinner on the way to the Ocean County shore/Seaside peninsula. Free parking in their own lot in downtown Lakehurst. Service was friendly, fast, and accurate. The restrooms were immaculate, and I don't use the word easily. We plan to return for dinner. Yesterday we decided to try Hangar 21 Tavern. What a delightful surprise it was. We were greeted by the owner Sal and although the restaurant and bar were at capacity we were seated after a short wait. We received a basket of warm breadsticks prior to ordering the mojito specials. Both were a great start. We decided to order appetizers which included eggplant rollatini, meatballs and spicy garlic shrimp. All were well prepared and delicious especially the red gravy that accompanied the eggplant and meatballs. The shrimp was in a sauce that had a little heat and was very good too. Service was good. Warm garlic breadsticks were served in place of bread. Manhattan clam chowder was fair. Steamed mussels in marinara sauce for appetizer, about a dozen, sauce was tasteless and the dish was very bland, kind of just mussels thrown in a tomato Sauce. Main dish was eggplant parmigiana, very disappointing, tasteless eggplant with cheese melted over it, extremely unappealing and just as tasteless. We were a party of six, the restaurant was about 1/4 full. Order mussels and calamari for an appetizer, they were both very good. The waitress was just asking our entree order, and we asked if we could substitute the type of pasta with shrimp scampi dish, she told us no ! It's pasta how hard is it to substitute, The restaurant was empty by now, and were the last table, and service was non existent. The entrees were ok, 3 of us ordered the shrimp scampi, and a flounder dish, and a chicken dish. We ordered 2 decaf cappuccinos, to our surprise there a half inch of coffee, and 4 inches of foam. I asked our waitress for more coffee, her answer, " I can give another shot expresso", we say no, we orders 2 decaf coffees, they were cold. We have been here twice before, and enjoyed the meals, maybe they were having an off night. I seriously doubt it. It took a while for the waitress. The bus boy was great with constant waters. The waitress brought the dinners out 1 at a time. Leaving an elderly mother in law to be the last with no dinner. When we finally complained 10 minutes later her plate came out. We were all finished with our dinners by then. There must have been only 1 cook in the kitchen that could not handle a party this big. There was no consideration on the check when we got it and it was a 20% automatic tip applied because of a large party. They lost my business. read more
