Had Nick back to do both of my bathrooms - and it turned out beautifully! I had ugly old 1970s bathrooms (rotting fiberboard cabinets, mold, and other hideousness). Again, Nick was so easy to work with - giving me realistic advice when I told him my HGTV-inspired plans - and keeping me posted daily as the job progressed. The guys he has working with him are also very skilled, and he kept my building manager happy throughout the project (very important for condo living)! Interestingly, Nick was working on my project when apparently Danielle H had her negative experience with him. I must say that what she describes doesn't sound like Nick AT ALL - having worked with him for weeks at this point, he's always been very responsive and punctual. I just cannot express how much my husband and I appreciate Nick and his crew. To explain, we were having our home fumigated on a Friday before a 3-day weekend, Monday being a National Holiday. Our house has cement roofing tiles, so for those of you that do not know, you can easily break the tiles if you are not careful. Well, the fumigators broke tiles and the weather forecast was projecting heavy rain Saturday night. After going through a lot of stress with the broken tiles and the chance of water damage, Nick reassured us that we will be okay and would have someone out to our house as soon as possible. BUMMERS!! Can't say good bad or average?? Talked to Nick over the phone on February 4 regarding work we needed done. He said he was swamped but would probably be able to get to the job eventually. Followed up the next day by text message and photos of the damage as well as the info to the tenant that needed the services. He said he didn't work on Sundays which is understandable but he said he would call the next day. Checked with the tenant a week and a half later on February 16 only to find out Nick never made contact with the tenant. I contacted him again and he replied saying due to family emergencies he put work on the back burner those last few days. I'm not sure if he has returned back to work. Unfortunately it's going on 6 weeks and neither myself or the tenant has heard from Nick. Moral of the review: Communicate either way. Can can...no can no can. read more

Sad about this situation. Called and got a response quickly- set up a day and time for him to come and look around at all we wanted done and was told we would get a quote at the end of the week. That never happened, nor the following week, nor the following so we messaged him and asked should we find someone else- we are on a time limit as we are expecting (which he knew when he said he would get to us with a quote and could start work pretty fast). Nick just completed a bathroom renovation for me that took a little over two weeks. In that time I got to know him and his workmanship pretty well. So I'm going to write a comprehensive review. ***** FRIENDLY ***** The first thing you'll notice about Nick is that he's an affable, likable, positive person. He's genuinely a great guy. He cares about his customers. He listens when you have concerns about any aspect of the project, and he tries to accommodate you. ***** PROFESSIONAL ***** The written estimate Nick created at the start of the job was probably the clearest, most useful estimate I've ever received from a handyman. He kept in constant communication with me throughout the project so I was never left wondering what was going on. He responded promptly (usually immediately) to my emails, phone calls, and text messages. He also stands by his work. If something goes wrong he'll come back and fix it. ***** HONEST ***** One day when I was out of the house, Nick and his helper moved an incredibly heavy cast iron tub up a flight of stairs. As soon as I returned home, Nick immediately showed me a couple of places where the tub had caused damage during the move. The damage was very minor and nearly invisible, but he wanted to be completely forthright about it and take responsibility for it. ***** EXPERTISE & DEDICATION ***** The breadth of Nick's knowledge of construction is impressive. He started in construction when he was just a kid working for his dad, so he developed expertise at a young age. He invents clever solutions to problems that crop up. When he doesn't know the best way forward he has the humility to consult with other experts. And most importantly, he is extremely careful, deliberate, and detail-oriented, and he takes the time to do things right. He doesn't rush or take shortcuts. As a result, he does excellent work. Some specifics: * He carefully braced all the pipes in the wall of the shower, which I didn't even know to ask for. * He did a great job installing our tiles. He has smart strategies for installing tiles to keep them as straight and symmetrical as possible. * He applied commercial epoxy grout rather than standard sanded grout. The epoxy grout is waterproof and requires less maintenance, but it's harder to apply and if you try DIY you'll probably mess it up. The grout lines in the bathroom are clean and straight. * He spent extra time to get rid of the sandy texture on the old drywall in the bathroom before applying the softer orange-peel texture I wanted. He applied skim coat and sanded multiple times. (He claims he doesn't do "level 5" drywall work, which is a premium finish where the wall is perfectly smooth. But as I read the definition of level 5 online and look at what Nick did, he sure comes close to that standard.) * He created a niche in our shower surround. He cleverly sloped the bottom ever-so-slightly inward so water would run off into the tub. It looks and works great. Much nicer than using the side of the tub as a shelf and accidentally knocking bottles over all the time. ***** BUSY ***** So when you put all these qualities together, and add positive Yelp reviews to the mix, what do you get? A handyman who is in demand. Nick hires helpers as needed, but he has discovered that he needs to be personally involved in every project in order to guarantee the level of quality he wants associated with his business. This is admirable and I think it's the right decision. But it means his business cannot scale to match the demand. He wants to reply to everybody promptly, but there are only so many hours in a day and he is just one person. He can't make phone calls while also installing drywall. I think he'd like to take every job that comes his way, but that's impossible. My advice is that if you think you'd like to work with Nick, be patient & understanding with the other demands on his schedule, and be as flexible as you can with your own schedule. His work for his current client takes priority over responding to new calls. So it may take a little time to schedule your estimate. Once he starts work on your project, you can rest assured that he'll focus on your project like a laser, and the job will get done and get done right. ***** CONCLUSION ***** In conclusion: Nick Sparks provides excellent service. Well, this review is LONG overdue. Sorry it's taken so long, Nick! First - if you want someone who knows a lot about a lot - nick is your guy. If he doesn't know, he's built up a base to be able to give you a solid recommendation of someone who does. Second - Nick is a nice, honest, personable guy. He was in our house for several days doing our upstairs floor. After the first day, he was like a member of our home who just so happens to leave around 5:00. Third: his prices are fair. I searched all over the island for a reasonable deal. All I needed was someone to come in and out down the floor. It did not require leveling and I did my own demo. Most people I tried wanted to get rich off me. Not Nick. Fourth: if you need something done quick, you might want to loom elsewhere. Nick works by himself most of the time and does his own books and scheduling. He's busy and is in demand. We told him we wanted him to do the work and were willing to wait. I'm glad we did. Didn't help that a rep from the Home Depot tile department recommended me the wrong thinset. At least they returned my money back when I returned the product. So..... Nick was able to come over on a day we scheduled and completed the job. It was nice of him to recommend different commercial thinsets to use (not the premade stuff) as one dries faster than the other. I told him that i was not in a rush as we had another bathroom to use. He was very responsive, but because he is a 1 man shop, it's realistic for him to respond at the end of the day when he is finished with his job. He had a great attitude and took the time to explain my options and answer all of my questions. Nick went out of his way to pick up the keys to my unit and got started on the day we agreed to. He snapped photos throughout the first day to document progress and kept me informed. He stayed within budget, finished on time and did a great job. He's a busy guy, and now I know why. Overdue review- Contacted Nick about an issue I had with bird spikes I had a different handyman place on my roof. They had fallen off and were hanging from the ledge. He stated he could come over on the weekend and take a look at the spikes but got busy and didn't show up. He DID however contact me the following week and ask if I still needed help he would come right over and help me. I did need help as those pesky pigeons moved to another corner of my roof! Nick came right over and installed my spikes. He even went over the previous handyman's work and actually screwed the spikes to the roof as they should have been done the first time. He also gave me pictures of the work he did as its hard to see work done on a second story roof. A couple of days later different birds apparently moved into the same corner of my roof! Contacted Nick and even though he is SUPER busy he came over that following week and installed more bird spikes for me. 1. We called Nick due to his high ratings. Surprisingly he answered on the Fourth of July and said he would come out same day for a quote, which was not expected at all. BUT he no showed. On the 5th he said he would be there at a certain time and showed up hours later than promised to see the things we needed fixed. We told him about a family party on the following Saturday and told him if he could just do the downstairs toilet we would be happy, the rest can wait until he isn't so busy. Needless to say he came Friday to find we "needed a new toilet" and he would be back by 1 the following day (Saturday). I rushed out and bought a new toilet and garbage disposal. My mother in law came home and waited for him all day. Finally around 3 we called him to find his wife had an appt he didn't know about-no courtesy call or anything from him. He finally showed up around 6 pm to fix the toilet while the family party was in progress. After he left I text him my email to send me a quote for our other issues. He said he was busy and it would take a few days---4-5 days later no quote. Clearly Nick doesn't need the business that bad. We had another handy man come out, showed up an hour after we called, fixed the current garbage disposal so we can return the new one we bought (with Nicks guidance) and charged a very reasonable price for all the odds and ends we needed taken care of. I would just say-if anything is pressing look elsewhere. Plus if you are charged to haul an old toilet or appliance away there is a disposal place that takes all that for free in Ewa behind the water plant. I left a voicemail for Nick. He called me back right away. I explained the issues I had with the house specially the moldy AC that needed to be replaced ASAP. He told me to go buy the AC I wanted and he would be by the same evening or next day to give an estimate of all the things I needed to be done and get to the AC ASAP. He told me to email him a list of the things as well, which I did. He said he or his father would be able to helpful w/ the critical things and then when he returned from vacation he would take care of the rest. He also responded to me email same day and said he would get back to me. Day of the 2nd no other word. Day of the 3rd no response to voicemail or email. Day 4 I called and his voicemail said he was off island. He totally flaked out and left me hanging after he told me he would get back to me and take care of AC. How can a business owner say he will do something then disappear. If he was leaving so soon he should have told me. Now I'm left trying to find someone else to do these repairs. I dont appreciate his unprofessional behavior by saying he would get back to me then disappear! Bad business!!!! Update after getting reply from Nick. Nick you told me you would get back to me next day. You did not. You said you would come by and do the estimate for sure. You did not do this which again in my opinion is bad business to tell a potential client you will do something and then never get back to me. To answer your question, no I would not have written a bad review if your price was too high or I went with someone else. That is your prerogative. But leaving me hanging like that, telling someone you are going to do something then don't follow through IS bad business. Bottom line, If you were too busy then you should not have told me you would come by to do the estimate and be able to fit in the change of the AC. The only rude part is leaving someone with the expectation that you are going to do something and then not get back to that person. When I first met Nick, he seemed very nice and responsible. He came on a Saturday to check out the project. It took about a week and our emailing him to get an estimate (this should have been a sign). We got the estimate and accepted it. First Nick told us he just accepted a job and it would be a few weeks and we said we would wait. After 3 weeks, I texted him and he said it would be a month. After a month I texted him 2 times with no response and my husband called him (no response). Needless to say I hired someone else. Nick finally emailed (2 weeks later) to say he had a family emergency in Florida. I've traveled to many places, so I know the phone works in Florida. This was a hard review to write, and I've waiting almost a year to write it. The bottom line is - they will do good work for a fair price IF they ever show up. Justin was nice enough, and he was thorough in his work. However, he missed many promised dates and has yet to come back to finish his work. Keep in mind, this work was done in Oct 2015, and I'm writing this review in July 2016. He "completed" his work replacing some siding and painting on our house. So when he came back to pick up his payment, he pointed out some gaps in the paint on the house. He said the paint was important to protect the work, and that he would come back and fill in the paint gaps. I was dumb enough to give him the payment, and then just expect him to come back, but he did seem nice enough and honorable enough to honor his word. He and his crew never showed up. I've tried contacting him several times, and he will either not answer his phone, or simply promise he'll be back to finish the work, and then not show. I know he's been avoiding my calls, because I'll call from a friends phone (different number on caller ID) and he'll pick up immediately. I've even offered him more work so he can come back and finish his old work, get new work (more money!) and he'll promise to come back, and then won't. If you do manage to have them show up to your place for a job, do not pay until you are 100% satisfied with your job. Even then, he claims he backs up his work with a guarantee on his workmanship, but good luck ever getting that to happen. I know good contractors are in demand right now, and can pick and choose jobs, but they shouldn't promise to show up, and then not arrive as promised. I am considering writing the BBB about this business, but I haven't yet, due to the minor nature of the job I requested. Nick just finished installing a new oven which required my counters to be cut. This made the job a little more difficult and many of the handyman services I called was not willing to take on this job. One installer agreed to do it but did not show up. No call, no text, no nothing. Just left me hanging. Lucky for me, Nick was willing to install my oven. He and his helper did an excellent job and worked hard throughout. I read many of the reviews that said he doesn't get back to you in a timely manner. These people have to understand that he is busy and that he cannot drop everything to respond to an email, text, or a voicemail. I found out that with a little patience, he will get back to you and do an awesome job. A little patience and understanding is well worth the quality of job that Nick does. We agreed to the work and price via email, which I thought was very professional. He was on time to start the project (blinds, closet doors, washer and dryer door and lanai blinds). Nick was a extremely accommodating and professional. I had a leak from my bathtub that seeped into the neighboring apartment below. A plumber had to go into my neighbor's bathroom, cut a hole in the ceiling, and fix the overflow cap. I called Nick to patch the ceiling. Since it was an emergency, Nick handled it promptly and did a perfect job. Unlike other companies who do the shortcut, Nick did 4 mud patches with sanding between each one, spray texture to match the existing, and two coats of paint on the entire ceiling. There is no evidence of a hole at all because he went above and beyond my expectations and did a full day's work by himself.
