It's close to my house and the store is well stocked. The people working there are usually friendly with the exception of the owner. He is not very friendly though he does know very well where everything is and can find it quickly. That said I haven't seen him around the store much lately. As others have stated, the staff can be overbearing when asking if you need help. Is disappoints me to read the reviews from women stating they were treated differently. I bought a large tool from someone on marketplace. Turned out to be stolen from this store but we didn't notice as their address sticker was not visible upon initial inspection. Once we realized it had been stolen, we did the right thing and called them to tell them we had it. When they came to pick it up from us, we loaded it for them and asked if they filed a police report or could help us get to the bottom of it since we were now out several hundred dollars and they were rather unhelpful and ungrateful. read more

I have been shopping at Handy True Value for over 30 years. I find the owners and employees to be friendly and helpful and attentive to my needs. Any advice I've been given by employees has been good advice. If there is an item I need that they don't have in stock, they will order it for me. I highly recommend this business. read more

I love that store! My home improvement skills are better than my vocabulary and I regularly show up there needing a "thinga-ma-jigg." They invariably figure out what I need and help me find it. They also are knowledgeable on how things work and can give advice on what to do and what to avoid well beyond what manufacturers tell you on packaging. I walked in here and was only here for 5 minutes before putting the items back that I was going to purchase and go somewhere else where I can shop in peace. I was asked "can I help you with anything?" By the same person 3 TIMES within the first few minutes of being in here and then 2 more times by other people. I get it you are trying to give great customer service but you guys overdue the shit out of it and it was A lot more annoying than it was helpful. read more

Pros...lots of employees always ready to help you find whatever it is you are looking for, the employees actually are knowledgeable in what they sell (unlike the big box stores), its close to where I live, so no long trip to the big box stores Cons..the prices are higher than the box stores, but I have noticed that prices seem to be more competitive lately read more

I just went to Handy True Value Hardware in Rock Island searching for a couple of odd screws/bolts. As I was being helped, a man walked up to the employee that was helping me and asked for help with a screw. The employee literally stopped helping me and helped the other customers instead. What I learned: If you are a woman, shop somewhere else because the concept of "first come, first serve" doesn't apply here. Men will be treated as a priority over women. For the record, this is the second time this sort of gender bullshit has happened here and the last time I set foot in this store. Our lawn mower was deemed "engine shot" today by Handy Dandy! The only thing wrong is that 1 month ago they took $80.00 from us to "fix" it. The manager told me that "the young man" who brought it in a month ago wanted them to fix it". The only problem is that the young man was Pete with balding and gray hair and never talked to anyone because the employees who fix lawn mowers were not there. Handy called Pete and told them it was fixed and it would be $80.00. Handy never called to get an OK to fix it the first time. The manager's reply was " there is not guarantee with repair....I guess it doesn't pay to shop "local". I will never spend another dime at that store. read more

The store has been my "go to" when I've struck out at the big box stores, or I just need a piece of hardware right away in order to get back to work. The staff is about as knowledgable as they can be on a wide variety of subjects and are always eager to help. This is a store that makes this neighborhood worth living in. read more

The Budget rental side of Handy True Value is despicable. I had a reservation to pick up a 17ft moving truck and they refused to honor Budgets agreement. Apparently, Budget has no authority over True Values counter help. The problem was True Value needed the truck for a different reservation the day after I was scheduled to return, by screwing me they might have honored the other who knows. read more
