Kimchi fried rice and one portion of cheese dakgalbi
Cindy D.

Since my last review in 2016, I have been here a number of times already. My experiences so far have been consistent. Very yummy portions of food, great side dishes and great location as well. Service was okay, nothing really to highlight. I ventured here by myself one time because I was craving dakgalbi and ordered a portion of kimchi fried rice and 1 serving of the cheese dakgalbi and both filled me up very well and I was content I made the trek to this place. A bit pricey but great place to have your cravings satisfied.

Cheese spicy chicken, 4 spice levels we got level 3 so spicy!!

My wife is korean and brought me here. She said it is similar as how they make it in Korea. TIP get the fried rice and have them mix it at the end, that was the best part. Very spicy but very cheesy! We had the cheese spicy chicken. We cute and good location, server was nice enough. Come here for old school korean food feels! Inside was a bit dirty and I think they could have had more korean stuff inside. Check it out either way!

We got the cheesy chicken with ramen, they charge by person, we didn't get to select spicy level. Cheese option is 3 dollars extra but I thjnk there wasn't enough cheese, there was also barely any rice cake but there r tons of chicken which is a big plus. The ramen soaked in all the sauce and it's delicious. I loved the glass noodle side dish too. Only thing was it was very hard to get their attention since they are super busy. And the table was very sticky somehow so I hope they can change the spray they use to clean the table.

I came here today with my friend for lunch and were immediately seated. The server scanned our COVID vaccination codes and checked our ID which was great- I love to see this practice more consistently across businesses. We got 2 portions of the cheese dakgalbi. It was delicious and salty and hot! Only room for improvement I'd like would be to add more rice cakes. We didn't add any ramen or rice cakes because we wanted to add the rice with the leftover sauce afterwards. However, we were both so full that we asked for no rice. Thus, the cheese dakgalbi is definitely filling. For the price $15.99, it definitely is more expensive than what it's worth but the service was great and it hit the cravings.

Pros: - Flavors are good, ingredients are fresh. I like how they add lots of vegetables to the Dakgalbi. The Dakgalbi is quite spicy. Cons: - Salty. Strong flavors. - Price. Definitely on the pricy side. - Generally below average service. - Not a lot of banchan dishes (only 3). I'll give it a 3.5 / 5.

I've been to Hancook a handful of times each with different groups and we've always left full and satisfied! If you like cheese, spice, and chicken - give this place a try. What we got: - Rose Cheese Dakgalbi with ramen noodles - Seafood Soondubu - Hot Stone Bibimbap (not pictured) My favs: - You really can't go wrong with chicken, cheese, ramen, and rice cakes! - Bibimbap came in a beautiful stone bowl Final Thoughts: I've had the original and the rose dakgalbi, couldn't really tell you the difference even though the rose costs a couple dollars more so I'd say just go with the original cheese. Nothing really ground breaking and the value for price is definitely not the best. Even when not busy it can also be a bit hard to get a server's attention. A good meal though overall and I'll continue to come back when the craving hits!

Came here on a recommendation from a friend. According to them this is one of the only places in Toronto that have dakgalbi. It was my first time having dakgalbi so I wasn't too sure what to expect. We ordered the seafood pancake and the cheese dakgalbi for 2 people with added ramen noodles. After ordering we were each given some sides, all of which tasted pretty good. The dakgalbi came on top of a burner to keep it warm. It tasted good and wasn't too spicy. I found the seafood pancake decent but it didn't blow me away as some other places I've tried. To get to the restaurant you have to walk down some stairs outdoors. I'm not sure if there's an alternative accessible entrance. I would come back again for dakgalbi and to try their other dishes as well!

Seafood pancakes - to go version

I can't rave more about their seafood pancakes. Obviously I've been here stuffing my face during dine in when lockdown wasn't happening but I can't resist ordering this dish again for take out. This is better served in the restaurant as it keeps the crispiness but its still as good in a takeout box. We waited to dive into the takeout container after walking Bloor Street but ate it right in the car to enjoy it hot. I'm not sure how they get it so crispy bit the mix of seafood and the batter is perfect in that sweet sauce. It was $15 and the owners are super nice when we walked in. The order took about 15 minutes which was perfect. Support locals and support this establishment!

Is a nice little place by Bathurst in Korea town! Went for an early dinner on a Thurs evening and was not busy at all. Overall found my experience alright but I didn't love it or have an amazing time. Maybe it was my fault for trying something new and not enjoying it that much??? The location is super convenient though and the owner was very nice! I tried the cheese dakgalbi ($16) an also got a beer on the side ($5). The beer is relatively cheaper than what most places charge you in the area so I gotta give props to that, but it was a bit funny when I was given the bottle without a bottle opener hahaha, had to ask for some help on that one. The food was decent, it consisted of rice cake, chicken, kimchi, and cheese. I wanted to try it because it seemed like their "signature dish" but I didn't enjoy it too much. Maybe I had wrong expectations but I was expecting more rice cake but 70% or so of it was kimchi which is fine but not what I was expecting. Additionally, the cheese was a bit underwhelming for a +$3 charge on the dakgalbi without it. Overall, I found the food alright but not particularly stand out for what it cost. Not particularly interested in coming back since there's quite a few other spots nearby.

Cheese dakgalbi, with extra ramen noodles

Great place to get a big plate of dakgalbi to share. The staff are all very patient and attentive to your needs. If you ask for something, they tend to get it almost instantly! We got the cheese dakgalbi with extra ramen noodles. The food came at the perfect temperature for eating right away! It was very delicious overall. The type of spicy here is the sweet-spice type that doesn't burn your tongue. I would say the spice level is around or a bit less than Siracha. There was lots of cheesy goodness to go around, but I feel like even more ramen would be better--their portions are a bit stingy. I'll definitely be coming back again!

Spicy Dakgalbi

Some dear friends invited us for dinner Hancook , one of their favourite neighbourhood haunts, to welcome us back to Toronto. Being huge fans of Korean cuisine we were intrigued as we've never had the opportunity to try Dakgalbi. We became even more excited when our friend Joel told us that his maternal grandmother lived in Chuncheon, a city famous for its Dakgalbi, and that he had eaten there a few times and loved every bite. And enjoyable it was. We ordered the signature dish - spicy Dakgalbi. Chicken is marinated then stir fried with sweet potato, cabbage, green onions and rice cake. The rice cake adds a marvelous soft, chewy texture, cabbage is nice and crisp while taking on all the flavours, and the chicken was excellent quality. This dish is only mildly spicy (to us anyway) offering loads of flavour to every addictive bite. The food is served on a hot pan kept warm by a portable stove as you eat. We couldn't help but get an order of dumplings too, all washed down with generous servings of soju and ice-cold beer. After devouring the main course and enjoying great conversation and more soju we decided more food was in order. So we ordered some spicy Tteokbokki (rice cake) and delicious seafood Pajeon (Korean pancake) - both superb - which we enjoyed with even more soju. So good! The evening lived up to the hype. We were very impressed by the Covid-appropriate measures taken by the restaurant to ensure a safe and enjoyable dine-in experience. Guests must wear a mask when not seated, and hand sanitizer and hand-held laser temperature check is required before being seated. Contact information for the table is recorded in case contact tracing has to be pursued, and servers and kitchen staff were scrupulous in both mask and social distancing compliance. Being so reassured made the food and atmosphere all that much more enjoyable. It was a great night and we'll be back at this great little spot sooner rather than later.

Very home-like customer service. Cheese dakgalbi was amazing, portions are just enough- not too much, not too little. Adding fried rice to the leftover dakgalbi is a must. Restaurant may be a bit hard to find because you have to go down half a flight of stairs and the restaurant is hidden by the stairs going up, but not too difficult once you look for it. Great hearty meal for a cold day!

Interesting choice of banchan

Came here today after roaming around Bloor Street... We wanted to have free Japanese souffle pancakes at Fuwa Fuwa and then go for $5 Kinton Ramen, but the line ups were INSANE. So we found this place and decided to have Korean food instead. My sister ordered the cheese dakgalbi which came with chicken, cheese, cabbage, sweet potato slices, and a few pieces of deokbokki. After asking the waitress / owner, I chose to order the spicy squid instead of the gamjatang and bibimbap... Unfortunately, I really regretted it afterwards as I didn't find the spicy squid that good. Both the dakgalbi and spicy squid were on the sweet side; the spicy squid was still tolerable as the spiciness balanced it out, but the dakgalbi was too sweet. In fact, it got to the point where my sister couldn't stand it afterwards and felt sick post-meal. Honestly, by the end of the meal, both plates seemed to blur together and taste the same. The banchan that accompanied the mains were very interesting! There was a pickled radish dish that I thoroughly enjoyed, along with a very interesting spiced macaroni dish, and a creamy corn potato salad. I didn't quite enjoy the macaroni, but the corn potato salad was a trip down memory lane. We ended dinner with the free dessert, which is shaved ice with evaporated milk and topped with red bean paste. The red bean paste was slightly on the sweet side, and so I didn't finish all of the toppings. That said, I thoroughly enjoyed the shaved ice particularly with the milk.

Hence we entered Jin Dai Lae. Good decision (yes, I am patting my back). Entree pricing was $3 to $4 lower than Markham/Richmond Hill. Portion was so big that you would be full, and might have to doggy bag. Most importantly, food tasted good. Short ribs stew had many pieces of beef. Squids hot plate was saucy. It wasn't too spicy, so it was good for me (menu didn't have a chilli sign either). For people who like it hot, you can ask for some chilli sauce.
