It was unexpectedly more expensive they estimated to fix a screen window. It took two months and was over $45 to replace four little plastic corners. Only two were broken when I took it in. And the plastic pieces were a different color than the original ones & thus will not match all the other screens in my house. I politely questioned the cost and why a different color. Response: "do you want me to take the corners off and you can have your broken screen back". I will never go back & recommend all others to go anywhere else for service. read more

Excellent local hardware store! I needed a bulb to replace my microwave light and the cashier directed me to the correct aisle. When I got to the aisle, another employee was ready to help me find exactly the right size and style within seconds! Very nice and attentive staff! The store is fine but I noticed there was a quiet, well mannered, calm little fluffy cat sitting peacefully at the front checkout. At first concerned, as the poor thing must be lonely while the store is closed for 12+ hours I did some digging and it appears it's kind of a commonality to have pets at hardware stores! Alright, y'all, it's storytime. A few weeks back, I agreed to puppy-sit for my neighbors for a grand total of 3 hours. Should've been easy. It was the first really hot day this year (90 degrees+), so I kept our walk short, made sure Digger (that's the dog) had plenty of water, fed him and went on my way. Easy, right? Welp, as I was leaving I was having trouble with the lock. I swear on my life I know how to operate a door handle/lock. But for whatever reason, the lock wasn't engaging so I tried again and oops! The key broke IN. THE. LOCK. Cue panic. I try everything to get this dang key out. I was using my (very nice. RIP) tweezers to try and grab the key, pliers, jewelry repair equipment, but nothing worked. I even took the handle off the door (the first of several times) and tried to bump it out like you're trying to dispense ketchup from a glass bottle. Nada. So I drive my butt and the sad half-key to Hance Ace Hardware and immediately the locksmith tells me it's an easy fix, I just needed to bring the whole lock in and he'd fix it right away. Oh of course. I drive my butt BACK to my neighbor's house, begin dismantling their door handle (all the while feeling like someone is going to think I'm breaking in) with the one screwdriver I could find in my house. They now have no handle on the door, the dog must think I'm crazy, it's still hot as Hades outside, and I'm driving back to the hardware store. Locksmith remembers me and immediately brings me back to the counter. In all of 3 minutes, he's got the broken key removed, a NEW key made, and even cut me one of those decorative ones (it's a puppy, in case you're wondering) so I could replace the one I broke. All for less than $20. Long story short, these guys are awesome. They took what was a rather frustrating (and embarrassing) situation and created a wonderful outcome. The customer service was great, technical knowledge is obviously on-point, and convenience was absolutely there. I would absolutely recommend this place for your local hardware store and will definitely be going back in the future. read more

I purchased what I thought was a brand new Toro lawnmower last year (2019) only to find out after it was having mechanical issues, that I called Toro's help line and they told me the serial number was for a 2013 model. Now, I ask you is this right that I paid full price thinking I was purchasing a NEW lawnmower, only to find out it was 6 years old, that they had in stock on their showroom floor. I contacted hance hardware multiple times, spoke with one the owners and told him my predicament. He offered me no resolution to this problem. Terrible customer service. Needless to say I will no longer be shopping at hance in the future, which is disappointing because I like to patronize my local business' whenever possible. -Unhappy in Hopkins read more

I love supporting my local hardware store. Its amazing that Hance can stock just about everything from a 12hp Toro to the smallest screw in a store that could fit into the customer service area of a Home Depot. The staff will help you navigate the place. They have a desk at the back of the store where they make keys and sharpen blades. And they have even helped me with some plumbing repair questions. I was in Hopkins today and I needed a shovel. They had some. I bought one. I decided against getting the length of rope, bleach and garbage bags there though. That would have been too obvious. I love this place.....reminds me of the hardware store my Dad and I would browse the aisles of when I was a kid. Old creaky floors, and the smell of lawn fertilizer mixed with plumbing parts. The have a little bit of everything, and most likely just what you need. The folks are really helpful and they even have one of those old Ford penny gum ball machines near the exit. I went in early this morning to have a key made for my car - 5 minutes, $85 and some nice conversation later, I was out the door with a working chipped key that would have cost twice as much at a dealership. He told me to retrace all my steps, and come back tomorrow. I retraced all of my steps, and came back the same day. He said, "So, you just expect me to give you a replacement item?" I said, "Yes." I have lived in Eden Prairie for thirty seven years. Slowly I've seen local hardware stores disappear. It is impossible for me to say how much I appreciate Hance in Hopkins. The know-how and service is incredible. Today I had a plumbing project, bathroom faucet, and it was convenient to go to Home Depot. It was a mistake. Was having trouble getting storm door keys copied at other hardware stores, as nobody seems to have key blanks for Larson storm doors. Looked online for an actual brick and mortar locksmith shop and there seemed to be one in Hopkins on 11th N. but shop seemed not to exist anymore so I walked over to Hance Hardware. Glad I did because they were able to make 7 keys for me at a reasonable price. I also looked at their incredible line of snow shovels, stuff you never see anywhere else. Even though this is a few miles out of my way, I think I'll start coming here for any future hardware needs. read more

The staff at Hance Hardware is the best in the city. I live in Hopkins and will not go to the other "Big Stores" unless I have to get lumber. Even the young part timers have a great knowledge of the hardware section and plumbing. My wife can go in there with great confidence knowing she will come home with the correct items. I restore vintage audio and need hard to find hardware and sometimes need to have custom parts made. They cut metal and glass. They cut a key for me for a 1940's lock and even had a replica lock in case it did not work. Support your local hardware store. This place is not just a convenient location. I fully believe in supporting local hardware stores. Kraemers in Minnetonka is awesome, as is DeKaynes in Minnetonka. Today I stopped into Hance, and remembered why I never go here. The kids who work here are clueless and the guy with the sideburns who works the back counter is a colossal jackass. They advertise services that they make it difficult to obtain (like cutting chipped keys) or do a really half-assed job on things (like chainsaw sharpening.) Take your money down the street to Kraemers. Avoid this place at all costs. read more
