Where to begin. Let's go with location. I do like the area that this restaurant currently is set because it feels comfy and safe. My in laws live around the corner so I come to this area often. Lots of homes coming up in the area and it doesn't feel rundown. But, one thing I don't like is the small eating area inside due to its location. The ambience inside is well kept with the decorations and it doesn't feel like some cheap pop up joint that someone wanted to make money off of real quick. The wall are nicely decorated with the culture and it smells great when you go in, no stink of fish or grease. I didn't enjoy that it was loud, it wasn't with people talking or eating, it was from the cooking. Lots of dishes banging around and cutting. If the space had more open floor, and some decorations for sound dampening, it would be great. For the sushi, I cannot say in good faith I know sushi. I really enjoy it and I was not disappointed with this restaurant. It was more expensive than some sushi places I know but the cost was worth the cleanliness and good service we received. Heck we even got those Andes mints with the check! Not many places do that anymore! Nice touch. The presentation of the sushi was great, the cost for drinks wasn't too bad, and the selection available was enormous. I've never seen that many food options before. I didn't use the restroom so can't give any info on that, that usually can tell me just how well a place is maintained by how they choose to clean. This place is fresh and creative. It has a small cozy atmosphere, I ordered a sashimi lunch to go and while waiting at the bar was giving water to sip on. If I lived close I'd probably be a regular. They are on the pricey side but I feel worth it for the options. read more

Not the place to go during COVID quarantine! No problem placing an order online but picking up food is where the train comes off the tracks! There is a crowd waiting outside the restaurant waiting to pick up orders that were placed an hour ago or more. Almost all places are doing curbside but this establishment thinks its a better idea to have everyone come in to get their food...one person at a time. Maybe when lockdown ends I'll come back but definitely not before that. read more

Best place for sushi in Hampton Roads, hands down. I've had more than my share of sushi and nowhere have I experienced fresher ingredients and better presentation. Additionally, their gyoza isn't from the freezer! Every single thing I've ever ordered in this restaurant is consistently delicious. I don't want to stop eating but I force myself to do so. That's how good it is! The restaurant is small and it can be crowded at times, but it's worth the wait. You will always be given hot towels (I love this practice) and a complimentary cucumber salad starter to whet your appetite. It's a great way to start your dining experience. Let me just say this. Wow! I'm very impressed with Hanaki. They took my to go order just as quick as I came in. I ordered two speciality rolls, The Outer Banks Roll and the Super Star Roll. This is the closest sushi restaurant to my house and we went here even before they were Hanaki. This place has great lunch specials so I took my mom here for lunch. We shared a chicken teriyaki bento box and the 2 sushi roll lunch combo and finished everything without feeling overstuffed. The sushi rolls.are delicious and they don't put too much rice in their sushi. It's a small restaurant with sushi bar and about 10 tables max, would not recommend for large parties, but better for small intimate meals. read more

Haniki uses a variety of combinations to create flavorful rolls (very few have spicy mayo). Sashimi cuts are also beautiful and fish always tastes fresh. In the 5-6 month period that I lived in Chesapeake, Hanaki became my 'go to' sushi restaurant. The fish was fresh and the atmosphere becoming for a quiet lunch between two friends or my infrequent solo excursions, designed to get me away from a stressful situation. I will need to update this review again next time I'm in the area for details. On my last visit, I asked for two hand rolls, which were delightful and satisfying. I don't remember much more than that. Altogether, a very good place for a relaxing meal. Went here for takeout and got the teriyaki salmon lunch box, which was not only tasty but also an pretty good deal. It tasted fresh and came with soup, a small salad, the teriyaki/vegetables/rice itself, 3 pieces of California roll and 2 dumplings. All for ~$12, so I was expecting lower quality food but I was pleasantly surprised. The soup/salad are not the best I've had but are pretty decent (not much seaweed/anything in the miso soup, too large pieces of lettuce in the salad). Haru Sushi is Hampton Roads best kept secret. It's modern, clean, and the staff are very friendly. I dream about the Mars Sushi Roll (not really, but I do think about it at least once a week). I drive past multiple sushi bars, and go out of my way, to eat at Haru's. This is a great "date night" place, or a place to have dinner with friends. It's not that big so it has a cozy feeling and the wait staff are very friendly. It's a bit out of the way if you don't live near the Great Bridge section of Chesapeake, but it's oh so worth the drive. Want to impress your loved one, make an appointment for a double massage at Massage Envy, then walk over and have dinner at Haru's, then walk next door and have a Skinny Dip creation, then drive home and cuddle because you will be relaxed after a massage and stuffed after dinner and dessert! By far the best sushi in town.I normally get the lunch special for about 8 and Change and you get two rolls and a choice of soup or salad. I normally get the spicy tuna or salmon roll and something about their rolls is fresh tasting compared to other places.
