Just a little background: The Griff House Beefeater & Premier Inn was the home of the great author,…read moreGeorge Elliot (Mary Ann Evans), where she lived for 22 years. It was refurbished in February 2004 as a hotel and restaurant. Some of the old parts of the house remain that is possible to be seen. We stayed in the Premier Inn hotel part for the full "George Elliot experience." The Premier Inn was relatively standard and nothing special or wrong. It was a pleasant stay and the hotel owner was very kind. He took us around the whole house and showed us all the George Elliot historical parts and told us the full history of the place. Regarding food, as the Griff House is pretty much in the middle of nowhere in England, the only option for food is the Beefeater restaurant that has also been built into the historic house. The Beefeater restaurant was decent but overpriced. At first when I had found this option for where to stay, I was a little skeptical and had uneasy feelings about a historical place being turned into something so commercial. However, they didn't do a bad job with the refurnishing and it was fun to stay in the house of such a great author! I definitely recommend it for all George Elliot fans.

The room was advertised online at £34.50 three days before our arrival, but when our travel plans…read morewere clear and I went to book the room the next day, the price had shot up to £43.50. As a travel critic and well known blogger with a focus on value, price gouging customers is not something I take lightly. When I asked the front desk clerk upon arrival why the price went up, I was told "That's the way we do it, prices change from day to day". Their "free" Internet was extremely difficult to connect to and so slow that it was useless, so we gave up rather than paying the extra £5 for "Premium" service, another indication that the company's greed outweighs customer needs and satisfaction. The room was so small that my wife and I had to take turns moving around the room because the double bed took up most of the room and while sitting at the small desk trying to connect to the useless Internet, my wife had to crawl over the bed to get around me and to her side of the bed. The staff at the adjoining Beefeater were great, but the food was mediocre and the prices quite high for what we got. My £15.99 ($22.60) sirloin must have been 8 ounces before cooking because it looked rather small and it was overcooked (I asked for medium-well and it was well-done). If a place called BEEFeater cannot cook a steak correctly, there must be something terribly wrong. The "unlimited" fries/chips were sparse and was never asked if I wanted more and the Cheddar, Pulled Ham and Mushroom Sauce (£1.99/$2.85 - bringing the total to £17.98/$25.45) was barely enough to cover the small steak. The only other thing I got on the plate was a single broiled tomato slice and one lonely sauteed mushroom. I can get quite a nice steak dinner at countless places in the States for $26, including a larger, better cut of meat and more/better fries, I would also get soup and/or salad, vegetables and bread for that price. Finally, I also found asking hotel guests to pay £8.95 ($25.30 for two) for breakfast also quite absurd. Whitbread (Premier Inn's parent company) obviously cares only about profit and not its customers and preserving their building's historical significance is clearly not a priority. They have ruined George Eliot's birthplace and childhood home both inside and out instead of restoring it to its former glory and taking advantage of Eliot's fame to bring her fans and English literature enthusiasts to Nuneaton and the property. How they got away with destroying such a historic property is unfathomable. The George Eliot Fellowship, dedicated to preserving and promoting the history of their famous, British namesake author and Nuneaton resident, has attempted, unsuccessfully, to persuade Premier Inn, Beefeater and Whitbread to restore the property to its former glory, promoting Eliot and Nuneaton with the respect they deserve. One would think the conglomerate would welcome the notoriety and income from such a famous and historic association, but with a 95% property capacity utilization rate, they apparently simply do not care. The hotel from the outside looked lovely and the location was good for a get away. The room we had was dated but my boyfriend convinced me if wasn't that bad... It was clean and the bed was comfy, but it was very old and felt like it hasn't changed in about 40 years. The cafe/bar/restaurant was very quiet and there were weren't many other people about. We had a meal in the restaurant on the first night, it was terrible, I had no idea what it was we were eating and I think we ended up walking to the shop instead after dinner. The breakfast in the morning wasn't fantastic either, the best thing about the hotel was the spa facilities. Although dated the pool was great fun, we spent a good part of our break just relaxing swimming in the pool and steam room and sauna. The location was really good too and we spent a good bit of time walking the grounds and local paths, the local village is great and was where we ended up each night as the hotel was dead. I do think I'd go back but I'm glad I know what I'd be expecting and I've based the review on the surroundings rather than the hotel.

Eventually had to stand up and shout for the honour of being served. Took advantage of the 2-1 offer as on my own this visit. Steak one, took 10 minutes longer than a steak typically takes, but OK, it's busy. I'll let that slide. Given a lame excuse for NOT SERVING A CUSTOMER, red flags immediately raised. Steak #1 eventually arrives, and apart from the seemingly excessive fat deposits throughout the meat, the meat tasted fine, and was cooked appropriately. And then we get to steak#2. My suspicions had been aroused, when the plate arrived too hot to touch comfortably (an issue in itself!). But when I opened the box, I've never seen a steak so black and shriveled! It is fascinating how many vegans / vegetarians go into thw waitressing career, because when you explain if a steak is rotten, or a steak is over / undercooked, all of a sudden they don't eat meat! This LIE is even more despicable, because even IF you give the benefit of the doubt they don't eat meat, they see it cooked CORRECTLY multiple times/ day! I called bullshit, and I told her it was so. It was THEN she dropped ANY pretence of being respectful. She came out with I can have the specialm but CANNOT take it away (funny how NOWHERE in there terms is that a thing!) When I explained WHY it was unacceptable, she came out with the LAUGHABLE excuse that "it cooks in the box" - it was to be taken away. Thing is whilst it IS true that it may continue to cook for a minute or too, it will NOT turn a medium / medium rare to a well done / burnt with a thick black crust - ESPECIALLY galling, when their were pieces of the other steak - which was THICKER than this garbage, and you could see with your eye the difference in shade! I only mention this, because when the "it cooks in a cardboard box" lie wasn't being swallowed, she came out with "well it's a thicker cut"! It was at this point the "friendly" waitress was turning aggressive - as she realised she wasn't going to get a tip! Full disclosure, I've been to this pub many many times, and I've tolerated being ignored, because of the deal. But this is a bridge too far. They rely on the good nature of customers to provide a poor product and poor service. But NEVER again! So if you like steak, do NOT go to the Corner House. Do NOT dare to complain, or expect the "chefs" to cook it how you want it! I'll tolerate a lot, but I will NOT tolerate being lectured to by a waitress - with PROVABLE LIES, then have her metaphorically wave her finger at me! When this stuff happens, I make sure the WORLD knows about their outrageous behaviour. People like these need to be weeded out of the industry. We PAY for that food, yet are treated as if we are blessed to receive it! Either the corner house needs to clean up it's act, or go away. If they did it to me, how many, and how often are they doing it to customers who WONT stand up for their rights? AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE,

Anyway, we went for lunch. There is quite a bit of choice. There are mains such as fish and chips, Cajun chicken, steaks, etc. as well as snacks like tortilla wraps and sandwiches. They also have a very good children's menu with choices from "traditional favourites" such as chicken nuggets and fish fingers to curry, roast dinners and "build your own" tortillas. They also have an extensive specials board which almost doubles the main menu choice (and all of these specials are included in the Two for One). The Corner House was very clean, the service was really quick and friendly and the food was nice. For three of us to have a meal and a pudding, it was about £30 so I think that's really good especially when the food and service are so good. I will definitely go again and recommend it to anyone in the area.

Now I spent two nights at this hotel and I have to say as I checked in quite late on the first…read morenight I did wonder if it was a night club as opposed to a hotel. The guy on reception had a very good check in patter, which I am not sure was just for my amusement or his! The room was decent they do offer upgrades to the upper deck where you get access to sky movies and sports. This was of no interest to me as I was only there to sleep. The room I had was of a good standard, clean and tidy, I was on the first floor with a view of a flat roof!! The staff in the hotel were very helpful and I do believe whatever request you may have they will endeavour to accommodate it. Hence I have given the hotel a 4 star rating. The bar does resemble one you would find in a night club and it was quite loud, the drinks weren't night club priced which was good. From the posters in the bar they do have specific events throughout the year some are comedy some are tribute bands. They have a good pool and gym in the hotel so if you want a dip in the morning it is more then adequate for that purpose, they also have an onside gym which was of a decent standard. There was a wedding party there on the Saturday night which is to be expect at a hotel the wedding party was one of the better behaved ones I have witnessed however when I went up to my room I could hear the music as if I was in the party!!! This did keep me awake for a bit but I think it all stopped around the 1am mark. The breakfast was the standard fare of fried food cereal and fruit, I cannot comment on the standard of the rest of their food menu as I never sampled it. If you are in Coventry and need somewhere to stay you could do worse than here.

The tv was large and room was clean however the room decor is old fashioned. The windows weren't double glazed so I could hear the outside fans and every car door being closed and whilst there are curtains didn't deal with the noise or draft coming through. Oh yeah, i thought it funny that the headboard for the bed in the room was for a two singles or but the bed was a double. Its just wrong why not fix it? (See photo) The bathroom to be fair was fine although dated. It was good they had a heated towel rail. I could unfortunately hear the bathroom from the next room and some sort of low plumbing noise all night. Sorry but i like a quiet room and shouldn't have to hear next doors plumbing when flushing the toilet. (I asked to be moved but they amazingly were full because of a conference.) I wish I could give it more as the bar area was fine and the staff were friendly and helpful but I can't get past the head board issue, lack of window double glazing causing a draft and the outside noise and most annoying having to hear the bathroom next door next door. Its just not good for £142 a night (probably only get sway with this rate due to the location being near to the NEC where they have loads of conferences. I only stayed here because in this instance it was my work that booked it. Best avoided until they upgrade the place. I only gave them a 2 as the room was clean and staff were nice and helpful.
