A friend and I recently visited Malmaison for dinner and I really can't fault the quality of the food or service. I went for the chicken liver parfait for my starter which was light and tasty served with well toasted bread and salted figs. For main I went for a rib eye steak which was beautifully rare served with fried onion and fries. To go with the steak I also went for a bernaise sauce...... and a salsa verde.....I can never decide what sauce to go for so to save disappointment why not order both! We were offered the dessert menu but after that mountain of food decided that in order to make it out of the door it probably wasn't the best option. Really great meal! I am looking forward to visiting again soon.

By far my favourite hotel in Birmingham!! Everything about the malmaison screams class and style. The location is pretty perfect to get to places in the centre. the rooms are beautifully decorated and comfortable and very big! The bed was so comfortable. We had breakfast in the restaurant on the saturday which was delicious, putting black pudding in front of me is always going to get you 5 stars! We had the continental breakfast on the sunday which was delivered to our room which we were very happy about as we were not ready to leave the bed! Overall a brilliant experience and I can not wait to stay again!!

The Malmaison is wonderfully located, especially if you are coming into Birmingham from New Street, in the mailbox development. A short walk from most places in town it's a good spot to locate yourself for general tourist activities. It's also solid value for what you get, keep an eye out for offers you can sometimes get a room for a song here. The rooms are lovely and quiet with large windows letting in plenty of light, the views are ok, if you're higher up you'll benefit from being able to see over a lot of the other buildings in the surrounding area but you are in the city centre so there's plenty of great car parks to look over at. We stayed in a superior double room which was remarkably spacious with a nice big bed, two chaise lounges and a good size desk with comfy chair. Amenities in the rooms are good, consumables like coffee and shower gel are of particularly high quality and it's nice to see touches like usb chargers in the plug sockets. The rooms could do with a little love however, the dial for the shower in our room had a big section knocked out of it for example. I had a pretty good night's sleep however it was marred by the fact that the room was simply too hot for my liking and the (very loud, clunky) air conditioning wasn't up to the task of cooling it down enough, I do like a cold room to sleep in though. Mattress on the bed was really nice, just the right balance between firm and soft and the curtains are really heavy, letting in almost no light. The staff were friendly and efficient throughout, check in and out was extremely smooth, in fact you can just fill out a card and post it in the little postbox at the end of the reception desk to check out without waiting at all. It's worth noting that the mal also has a good cocktail bar, much better (and better value) than the average hotel and this whole floor (including the brasserie) has been renovated relatively recently so it's not at all tired like some of the other areas. Breakfast is in the brasserie, which also does a cracking Sunday lunch, and it's a good one. Good quality pastries etc in the continental buffet and then a selection of tasty hot breakfast staples to choose from, a lovely start to the day.

Ahhhh... That wonderful word. Staycation. With it being my partner in crimes birthday in November, I was struggling to think what to do to make it special for him. Now, he has a lot of "stuff" (and we live in a one bed flat), so buying things wasn't going to cut it. As we have had a mental year (without a proper break), I thought it might be nice to take him somewhere for the night as a suprise. After a natter with some of the other Yelpers and some of my friends, Malmaison was suggested as a great place to do just that! You know what? They weren't wrong. Firstly, Malmaison is very easy to get to. Located in the centre of Birmingham (in the Mailbox complex) Malmaison boasts a hotel, a bar, a brasserie and a spa. It's just 5 minutes walk from New Street Station and is easy to find from anywhere in the City. It's currently a little unassuming from the outside (with the ongoing work at Mailbox), but the entrance is just next to the carpark area and once you spot the signage, it's a doddle to locate. The hotel hosts a whole range of offers throughout the year. From spa packages to romantic weekend breaks, there is many a deal here for many a budget. I opted for the "Sunday night stopover" which entailed eating in the restaurant (minimum spend £75) and then the room costs just £25 for the night (unless you upgrade to a posher option). The restaurant is lovely. To get to it, you have to go through the reception (on street level) and you can either catch the lift to the first floor or take the plush looking spiral staircase one flight. We were a little early, but this wasn't an issue. We were booked in, our coats were taken and we were whisked over to a table overlooking the street (perfect for people watching during your meal). We were given the option of the "al la carte" menu or the "all-you-can-eat" Sunday brunch or lunch. We went for the latter and didn't regret our decision! We ordered a couple of cocktails (peanut butter and makers mark cocktails, a fantastic combo) for £9 each and perused the menu. You order your mains and dessert with the waiter and the starters are then (mostly) self service. You can order an omelette or waffles (included in starters) which are cooked fresh from the menu as well. The selection of starters was amazing! Terrine, soup, cheese, salads, cooked meats, olives and seafood... it had it all! Our plates were so overstuffed you couldn't have fit anything else on there. The soup was a sweet potato on the day we went and was delicious! We also had waffles, which meant by the time our mains turned up we were already mostly full. The mains were equally nice. We both had the roast beef (served very pink, as per our order) and the meat was melt in the mouth. The roasties, veggies, yorkshire and gravy were also faultless meaning we cleaned our plates. With our meal we had opted for bottle of Mal Plonk (the house red), which was very serviceable at £17.50 a bottle. By the end of the mains, I couldn't even finish my wine... I was stuffed! But there was still the dessert to come, so after around a 30 min break (our waiter gave us as much time as we needed), we requested these be sent over. I opted for the the creme brulee (one of my favourites). Again, the burnt sugar crust was crispy and the custard inside was perfectly balanced with vanillary sweetness and mellow creaminess. Bliss. After we had finished our meal, we popped (read waddled) down to reception to check in and grab our room. As it was Dan's birthday he was given a complimentary glass of champagne during the meal, had his plate decorated for desserts and was given a cocktail voucher on check-in (which were all little extras and made the visit a little bit special). Our room was a standard double, but was fantastic. I have stayed in a lot of hotel rooms recently and this was definitely one of the better ones. Generously sized, good filter coffee in the room, a lovely large bathroom with 100ml complimentary shower gel and shampoo and a huge, comfortable bed (which was perfect for us to nap off the massive lunch). Unfortunately we didn't get a chance to venture into the spa (this closes at 6pm on Sundays), but we had a great time watching TV and chilling in the lovely surroundings. After a good nights sleep, we checked out at 7:30am to head home and get to work. The staff were a little confused when they asked if we had a car parked in the garage or needed a taxi and were greeted with the works "it's ok, we'll walk home", but c'est la vie! All in all, a great experience. It wasn't *quite* perfect as no where could we find details of when the spa was open, the facilities it offered to guests and our mains were bought over a bit quickly in the restaurant (we were told to ask for these when we were ready, but they were just bought over when they were done), but I would definitely go back for another little slice of relaxation in the City. Well recommended (especially the Sunday lunch which is a bargain at £19.95pp).

Only a one night stay but everything was top. The design, cleanliness, service, ambience, comfort level and the spa! Have to admit I was surprised to find this place out here... Bed room was toooo comfy, super nice beds. I love the design too, the art work the furnishing. Perfect! Spa - a very classy place. Very nice treatments and staff. A very broad range of services...almost anything you can think of they can deliver...and well. Restaurant - the food was ok, only two meals so cannot tell. But the staff service was absolute top level. Made me feel so at home.

My style of hotel (well usually but I am partial to country houses too!). What is mean is cool, funky, modern design focused. Situated in the Mailbox in Birmingham. Bar on the upper floors with small restaurant off it. Some nice stylish stores situated in the same building such as Armani and Boss. Expensive prices but it is a 4 star hotel. Cocktails and food are nice. Bedrooms way more spacious than the sister hotel in Manchester. Not sure how central it is for walking as I taxied it everywhere. Friendly staff.

I went to the launch of Malmaison new 'work + play' space (meeting room and events space) and wow did they throw a party! We were greeted with a red carpet, photographers ('paps' lol) and a glass of champagne. The space was much lighter and more spacious than previously. The staff were very attentive... But the real showstopper was the food. They put on what I have to say must be the best buffet I have ever seen. Whole suckling pigs, lobster, meats, cheeses, fish, cold cuts... And every mouthful was delicious. It was of very high quality.

I'm updating my review to give the Mal 5 stars. I've stayed here a few times now and every time has been brilliant. I absolutely love staying here, it's a cut above every other hotel I've stayed in in Birmingham (and I have stayed in many!!) The rooms are spacious, the beds are so comfy I never want to get out! The staff are always helpful should you need anything - we needed a phone charger, rang reception and one was sent to our room within minutes! As I mentioned in my previous review, the full sized soaps, shampoos and shower gels are a lovely touch and they smell amazing! Mal Maison is definitely my favourite hotel. I'll be back soon!

I visited the bar area here for a Christmas meal in December. It was a Tuesday afternoon so the place was quiet which meant service was quick and food arrived promptly. The food was good but not excellent. Perhaps a touch expensive but it was indeed tasty. The staff were really fantastic in their service and the decor is very pleasing on the eye. The bar area is great for a chilled out pre drink and I'm told it's 'THE place' to be for a lively Saturday night drink. I hope to find out soon. Situated in the newly refurbished mailbox, this location is fantastic for the lively bars at the back of the mailbox and is a short walk to new street station.

Location wise, it's around five minutes from New St or Snow Hill stations and very central. It's as close as you get to a leafy spot in central Birmingham. The reception is stripped down, with self check-in and an assistant to help. Breakfast and dinner are provided in the adjacent Beefeater (named "Bar & Block"). The rooms are pretty standard, but quite well soundproofed, and I didn't suffer from external noise or that from other rooms. Free wifi was perfectly adequate for email and messaging. The beds are very comfortable, though neither the 'soft' or standard 'hard' pillows quite do it for me. The problem for sleeping, however, was the noise of the heating/cooling unit fan - an irritating whine which meant I had to turn it off to go to sleep and then awoke at 4am too warm. There was also a peculiar, intermittent watery noise, which I presume was someone flushing or washing elsewhere in the building, though it may have been the air-conditioning. Breakfast was ok, a fairly standard buffet, though Europeans would bemoan the lack of cheese and cold meats. I returned from getting a second cup of coffee to find the waitress clearing away the toast I had just buttered, although she apologised and offered to get me another. So, ok for the price (£118 including breakfast on a weeknight) but not outstanding value given the imperfect sleep.

The website is clear, comprehensive and it's easy to compare several nearby hotels to choose the most suitable one. My family and I stayed at this Premier Inn in Birmingham city centre earlier this year to attend the All England Badminton finals at the National Indoor Arena. The hotel is perfectly located in the city centre, close to all the shops and restaurants but only 20 minute walk along a pedestrianised route from the NIA. There is some metered parking outside the hotel but for longer term parking, it's best to use one of the many public car parks nearby. We used the Brunel Street car park which is a 5 minute walk away and cost around £8 for 24 hours on a Sunday. Check in is a funny affair with self service machines to enter your details but with very eager staff hovering to help. This hotel is very well staffed with helpful people and I'm not really sure why they don't just use a traditional check in system. The rooms were big and like other Premier Inns I've stayed at, quite modern and updated. There was a problem with the shower door in one of the rooms but we were given a new room immediately. The beds were comfortable. There was a nice looking on-site restaurant but we chose to eat out. This hotel satisfied both the CTG (Chinese Thrift Gene) and the CQG (Chinese Quality Gene)!

Breakfast was great, service was excellent and very prompt. Coffee was good too. At £16.95, its the most expensive I have eaten in Birmingham - but this does come with access to the pastries and cereals too - so its still expensive though, compared to others locally. Breakfast consists of eggs, (I had 2 perfectly poached ones), 2 bacon, a flat mushroom, half a tomato, black pudding, (not great - a bit crumbly) and a tiny sausage. Its a shame about the sausage - it should have been bigger or another should have been added to the breakfast. Would I go back? Possibly. There is some great competition in Birmingham

A former eye hospital turned hotel, it is a great big hunk of Victorian red brick right in the middle of Birmingham. Outside the building has plenty of nice features and the interior is even more opulent. There's a rather grand entrance hall with the bar off to one side and the bistro to the other. The event I attended was a film screening held in the courtyard, which is just off the entrance hall, in the centre of the building. At one time this area would have been open air, with a gallery running around the outside. Now, though, there's a clear roof above and it serves as a dining area. The space would make a nice venue for a party or similar gathering, and worked well for the film screening. The hotel staff were on hand to serve food and drinks. After the screening my friends and I went into the hotel bar for some drinks. Although the drinks aren't cheap (as to be expected), there is a very good selection and the staff provide complimentary bar snacks. The bar is quite intimate, with painted walls and low lighting. I'll be heading back for a drink for sure, as the atmosphere was nice and relaxed.

The reception area looked great and there were refreshing welcome drinks we could help ourselves to while we waited, I had parked in their car park and was given a token so that there would be no charge for the use of that facility. The staff were very polite and friendly so I had high hopes for the rest of the day. However when we went downstairs to the heath suite, I was left somewhat disappointed. The changing room area was quite small with only a few lockers, as there were other guests using the spa we didn't even get a locker each to ourselves, so 5 of us just had to squeeze our things into 3 lockers! I had ironed my dress for the evening event beforehand however that got creased as there were so many bags in the locker that it was not able to hang properly. It stated on the wall as you walked in that there was a sauna, steam room, Jacuzzi and pool, however there was no sauna. The facilities that were there were great, but I had been hoping to paint my nails and dry them off in the sauna, so I was disappointed. The sun loungers had all been taken up by other guests so we had to leave our towels on the chairs by the tables. There was quite a mess of coffee cups, tissues and things on the table when we arrived, and it was still there when we left 4 hours later. I had booked a pedicure as my treatment, my friends had booked massages and facials. The pedicure was good, but normally they file the dead skin off your feet as well as doing your nails and you get a little bit of a foot massage which they didn't do here. From what my friends told me, the massage was good but it depended on which therapist you had, as each did slightly different things. The lady who had the facial was happy with that as they use decleor products. There are only 2 showers and 2 closed changing rooms, so it was quite a long wait before I could get ready. The showers were also filthy! There were empty bottles, hair and scum on the floor of both showers and we had noticed that when we arrived, but assumed it would be cleaned by the time we showered...it wasn't! All in all I would say it was a disappointment for all of us, as we had expected far better!
