Ahhhh... That wonderful word. Staycation. With it being my partner in crimes birthday in November, I was struggling to think what to do to make it special for him. Now, he has a lot of "stuff" (and we live in a one bed flat), so buying things wasn't going to cut it. As we have had a mental year (without a proper break), I thought it might be nice to take him somewhere for the night as a suprise. After a natter with some of the other Yelpers and some of my friends, Malmaison was suggested as a great place to do just that! You know what? They weren't wrong.
Firstly, Malmaison is very easy to get to. Located in the centre of Birmingham (in the Mailbox complex) Malmaison boasts a hotel, a bar, a brasserie and a spa. It's just 5 minutes walk from New Street Station and is easy to find from anywhere in the City. It's currently a little unassuming from the outside (with the ongoing work at Mailbox), but the entrance is just next to the carpark area and once you spot the signage, it's a doddle to locate.
The hotel hosts a whole range of offers throughout the year. From spa packages to romantic weekend breaks, there is many a deal here for many a budget. I opted for the "Sunday night stopover" which entailed eating in the restaurant (minimum spend £75) and then the room costs just £25 for the night (unless you upgrade to a posher option).
The restaurant is lovely. To get to it, you have to go through the reception (on street level) and you can either catch the lift to the first floor or take the plush looking spiral staircase one flight. We were a little early, but this wasn't an issue. We were booked in, our coats were taken and we were whisked over to a table overlooking the street (perfect for people watching during your meal). We were given the option of the "al la carte" menu or the "all-you-can-eat" Sunday brunch or lunch. We went for the latter and didn't regret our decision!
We ordered a couple of cocktails (peanut butter and makers mark cocktails, a fantastic combo) for £9 each and perused the menu. You order your mains and dessert with the waiter and the starters are then (mostly) self service. You can order an omelette or waffles (included in starters) which are cooked fresh from the menu as well. The selection of starters was amazing! Terrine, soup, cheese, salads, cooked meats, olives and seafood... it had it all! Our plates were so overstuffed you couldn't have fit anything else on there. The soup was a sweet potato on the day we went and was delicious! We also had waffles, which meant by the time our mains turned up we were already mostly full.
The mains were equally nice. We both had the roast beef (served very pink, as per our order) and the meat was melt in the mouth. The roasties, veggies, yorkshire and gravy were also faultless meaning we cleaned our plates. With our meal we had opted for bottle of Mal Plonk (the house red), which was very serviceable at £17.50 a bottle. By the end of the mains, I couldn't even finish my wine... I was stuffed! But there was still the dessert to come, so after around a 30 min break (our waiter gave us as much time as we needed), we requested these be sent over.
I opted for the the creme brulee (one of my favourites). Again, the burnt sugar crust was crispy and the custard inside was perfectly balanced with vanillary sweetness and mellow creaminess. Bliss.
After we had finished our meal, we popped (read waddled) down to reception to check in and grab our room. As it was Dan's birthday he was given a complimentary glass of champagne during the meal, had his plate decorated for desserts and was given a cocktail voucher on check-in (which were all little extras and made the visit a little bit special). Our room was a standard double, but was fantastic. I have stayed in a lot of hotel rooms recently and this was definitely one of the better ones. Generously sized, good filter coffee in the room, a lovely large bathroom with 100ml complimentary shower gel and shampoo and a huge, comfortable bed (which was perfect for us to nap off the massive lunch). Unfortunately we didn't get a chance to venture into the spa (this closes at 6pm on Sundays), but we had a great time watching TV and chilling in the lovely surroundings.
After a good nights sleep, we checked out at 7:30am to head home and get to work. The staff were a little confused when they asked if we had a car parked in the garage or needed a taxi and were greeted with the works "it's ok, we'll walk home", but c'est la vie!
All in all, a great experience. It wasn't *quite* perfect as no where could we find details of when the spa was open, the facilities it offered to guests and our mains were bought over a bit quickly in the restaurant (we were told to ask for these when we were ready, but they were just bought over when they were done), but I would definitely go back for another little slice of relaxation in the City. Well recommended (especially the Sunday lunch which is a bargain at £19.95pp). read more
