Where do I start? Let's start at the beginning. Sat down at table for 15 minutes, with the waitress looking over a number of times. Eventually had to stand up and shout for the honour of being served.
Took advantage of the 2-1 offer as on my own this visit. Steak one, took 10 minutes longer than a steak typically takes, but OK, it's busy. I'll let that slide. Given a lame excuse for NOT SERVING A CUSTOMER, red flags immediately raised.
Steak #1 eventually arrives, and apart from the seemingly excessive fat deposits throughout the meat, the meat tasted fine, and was cooked appropriately.
And then we get to steak#2. My suspicions had been aroused, when the plate arrived too hot to touch comfortably (an issue in itself!). But when I opened the box, I've never seen a steak so black and shriveled!
It is fascinating how many vegans / vegetarians go into thw waitressing career, because when you explain if a steak is rotten, or a steak is over / undercooked, all of a sudden they don't eat meat! This LIE is even more despicable, because even IF you give the benefit of the doubt they don't eat meat, they see it cooked CORRECTLY multiple times/ day! I called bullshit, and I told her it was so.
It was THEN she dropped ANY pretence of being respectful. She came out with I can have the specialm but CANNOT take it away (funny how NOWHERE in there terms is that a thing!)
When I explained WHY it was unacceptable, she came out with the LAUGHABLE excuse that "it cooks in the box" - it was to be taken away. Thing is whilst it IS true that it may continue to cook for a minute or too, it will NOT turn a medium / medium rare to a well done / burnt with a thick black crust - ESPECIALLY galling, when their were pieces of the other steak - which was THICKER than this garbage, and you could see with your eye the difference in shade! I only mention this, because when the "it cooks in a cardboard box" lie wasn't being swallowed, she came out with "well it's a thicker cut"! It was at this point the "friendly" waitress was turning aggressive - as she realised she wasn't going to get a tip!
Full disclosure, I've been to this pub many many times, and I've tolerated being ignored, because of the deal. But this is a bridge too far. They rely on the good nature of customers to provide a poor product and poor service. But NEVER again!
So if you like steak, do NOT go to the Corner House. Do NOT dare to complain, or expect the "chefs" to cook it how you want it! I'll tolerate a lot, but I will NOT tolerate being lectured to by a waitress - with PROVABLE LIES, then have her metaphorically wave her finger at me!
When this stuff happens, I make sure the WORLD knows about their outrageous behaviour. People like these need to be weeded out of the industry. We PAY for that food, yet are treated as if we are blessed to receive it!
Either the corner house needs to clean up it's act, or go away. If they did it to me, how many, and how often are they doing it to customers who WONT stand up for their rights?
