Found this place while on a trip. Absolutely fantastic fried fish and chips. My wife and I both had the Haddock, and couldn't have been more impressed. Flavorful, moist fish, absolutely FRESH, with a crispy crust that you will want to come back for again and again. A 2 piece meal is HUGE -- definitely worth the very reasonable price. Several friends recommended Hammerhead's for fish and chips, so I thought I would give it a try. Here's my feedback: - The cod was cooked nicely. Not dry nor greasy - The chips were dry - The gravy was really thick and lumpy - According to the website, the 2 pieces of cods cost $29.50. I placed 3 orders of cods and chips. I also ordered a large gravy at $3. Somehow the math doesn't add up in the receipt - According to the website picture, there's slaws, but I didn't get any. A friend told me afterward that slaws are separate. Then I think they should exclude the slaw from the pic - No plastic utentils nor condiments were included Maybe this is a case of miscommunication. But for $30, the quality of the cooking should be good at least. read more

Just tried the fried chicken dinner and wow awesome! Delivered via Uber Eats in an all paper and compostable setup the biggest box of chips / fries, gravy, and crispy savory fried chicken enough to feed 2 adults. I got the mushy peas too which was an excellent pairing with the dish. Delish!! read more

Good fish, sad chips. The cod was fried perfectly - not too oily, perfectly cooked, beautiful flaky meat. The batter was not too thick as well, and had a great flavour. Needed a Ton of salt though. The chips were dry, flimsy, soggy, and also needed a Ton of salt. We had not ordered via delivery; we ate immediately after picking it up, so we were a little sad about this. This is the best fish' n' chips in town since the closure of Connaught Fish'n'chips (RIP ). Perfect stop for an affordable lunchtime meal while still retaining the quality I expect. In addition to the prepped menu, it seems like the best place to buy quality seafood for home cooking. I personally do not cook seafood at home too often, however I do purchase locally and know quality ingredients when I see them. After speaking with employees about sourcing there is nowhere else I would go to buy seafood. P.S. They also often carry products that are from and support First Nations fisheries which is an economy everyone who eats seafood should be investing in. I did notice a few things which I think could be improved which I will include in the cons list bellow. Overall a very consistent spot and would definitely recommend paying a visit. My rating: 4.5 out 5 STARS ------------------------- PROS: - The quality of fish is always great as they ethically and locally source. - Their coleslaw is right on the dot; not too heavy but not too watery with a little bit of funk which is how I like it. - Ethically and locally sourced products and ingredients - Friendly and knowledgeable staff - Affordable - Gluten-free CONS: - Batter is sometimes inconsistent; does not adhere to the protein fully (could be because there is nothing inside the box to absorb moisture I.e. newspaper or paper towel) - Insufficient indoor seating, and somewhat cramped even while picking up an order - Overpriced beverages ($4 for a can of Arizona is simply a scam this should be obvious, it's Arizona!) - Tartar sauce, not funky enough for my taste but I understand maintaining a middle ground (include more too!) read more

I give it 4 stars now because the owner taking the time to respond means that he cares for his business and his customers. I still haven't tried the food, but next time I'm around Hamilton I'll make sure to stop and order a bit of everything! Post from August 18th, 2020: I give it this rating because from the moment I opened the door, I was received with an attitude. I get you are busy, but if you rely on your customer base for your business to succeed, you might as well make an effort to be friendly or at least say: "sorry, I'll be with you in a few minutes". The food must be good, because It had many people waiting to get theirs, but did not have a chance to order and didn't want to in the end. By the time they asked me what I wanted, the first thing they told me is that my order would be ready in at least and hour from the time I placed it. It gave me the impression that they did not want me to do so). Visited Hammerhead's based on online reviews while travelling in the area. We ordered the halibut fish and chips, shrimp and scallops, mushy peas and coleslaw. The surprise highlight for us was actually a dish our friends ordered: the Jaffna fish curry - delicious and flavourful. However, it could stand to be even spicier to add more kick. Fish and chips were crispy and delicious as well and I personally enjoyed the creamy and fresh coleslaw. The only comment I might make is regarding the scallops and shrimp: the deep fried batter portion overpowered the actual meat of the seafood and could be reduced so that you could taste the freshness of the seafood. I have visited here often for my fish and chips craving and they have never disappointed me. Crispy, delicious and fresh. Not greasy or soggy like some places. Saw some people on the sidewalk eating fish and chips and decided to stop in here. There are quite a few choices of fish and their fresh-cut fries are plentiful.They have the traditional English sides like mashed peas and curry sauce. The fish portions were large and tender. Apparently their fish crust is made gluten-free. It didn't have the usual crispiness because of this but it did not take away from the flavor. The curry sauce tasted more like a spicy chutney with a bit of a kick. Definitely worth the visit. And will come again. The two guys working there were very accommodating and helpful. Went for the first time this week. Small place, very busy with takeout and delivery while we were there. We ate in at the chair rail in front of the window, watching the comings and goings of Ottawa St. We had fish and chips (obviously!), opted for the haddock. Also had the curried fish on basmati rice and a side of coleslaw. Portion sizes were big on the fish on both dishes. Prices were very fair considering quality and size. Food was very very good. Batter was not too heavy, fries were obviously fresh cooked not frozen. Curry for the fish was especially tasty, a little spicy but not enough to scare anyone off. We drove from Westdale and it was well worth it. Only regret was they also sold fish and home made chowders, wanted to buy a container of the clam chowder but forgot. Amazing food with a great name to boot. Came in from Toronto and I was hard-pressed to think of any resto that's served better fish & chips between T.O. and the Hammer. Ordered the halibut and crab cakes with a blue cheese salad. Not sure how they managed with a gluten-free batter, but the texture of the fish & chips was perfect. And the crab cakes were huge and chock-full of tasty crab unlike most restaurants. Took home a container of their frozen seafood chowder, which was a tasty delight for an evening where I didn't want to cook - just slightly on the saltier side. I was eager to try this quaint little 'fish and chip' shop as sit seemed to offer so much. Sadly, I must report that the joint desperately needed organization, cleaning, and scrubbing. I ordered single halibut and chips, just over $18. The chips weren't bad although overdone. The fish was unedible. It was cold when I went to eat it and found that wasn't even cooked through. I left my plate uneaten. Sad but true, I won't be going back there again. I was very disappointed. read more
