Not really a review, just a report about Dipson Amherst Theatre's Secret Cinema, for Tuesday June…read more9, 2026. Because I've gone to Regal's Monday Mystery Movie a few times, I thought I'd compare the two events. IDK when the next Mystery Movie will be, but last night the next Secret Cinema was said to be scheduled for July 14. That would be Bastille Day, if I'm not mistaken, so maybe the movie will be an old French film, or something set in France. Maybe The Pink Panther. No way to know in advance. I did find out on June 8 that Secret Cinema does not show new movies, but went anyway. (The TCM channel is one of my favorites.) Last night The Wizard of Oz was shown on the big screen, after a short talk about the film. Tickets for Secret Cinema are $10 and concessions are half price. Or maybe that's just for popcorn. I'm not sure because all I got to drink was a 20oz bottle of Aquafina, which was $5.50. If you enjoy old movies, "old" being anything from vintage to classic, you will want to check out Dipson Amherst's Secret Cinema. Always a Tuesday night.

I've seen them operating registers and serving food while all the other cashiers are taking care of other customers. Thank you for getting in there and keeping the lines moving! Aside from that, the theaters have always been clean when I go, more importantly, the restrooms are too. What I love, love is that there are recliner seats in every stadium and the distance apart from the back and front seats is PERFECT! I'm one of those people that doesn't like people kicking my seat. I don't want to feel like someone else is right on top of me and these seats are great. They're also numbered so for blockbusters, you should totally use their app and reserve your seats. For those who want to relax with a beer or wine, they have that too. When you walk in, go straight to the register for your tickets and food. I think it would be cooler if there was a register dedicated to "tickets only" instead of also taking peoples food order (you know, for people not buying popcorn and drinks) but I understand they're trying to make use of every register and not overstaff to save money, it's all cool. I'm just thankful there's still a person doing the job and not a robot or Kiosk that doesn't work. Lol Lastly, I also like the location of this theater, it's in its own area so there's no other traffic incoming from stores or restaurants, it's just sitting there by itself. Also in the area are Walmart, Aldi's Wegmans, Applebee's and several fast food locations like Five Guys and Ted's.

Shea's is celebrating it's 100 birthday and up until this point has had no elevators. They're now in the process of adding an addition which will include elevators. Since it's an addition it won't take away from the original charm of the building. If somehow you live in the Buffalo area and have never been to Shea's you really need to check it out. At 6 the doors were finally opened to sit down and hear about the season. It is now 6:15. The organ is still playing; there is no evidence of someone coming out to talk about the '26-'27 season. There are vendors in the lobby, selling beer, water, wine, popcorn. Nothing complimentary. 6:32 and the first speakers have appeared. Very disorganized. The presentation was a bit lengthy, but very nice. Each of the seven shows in the subscriber series was introduced. Guest artists performed songs from two musicals in the subscription: "Sound of Music" and "The Great Gatsby". There are three additional shows which are not part of the subscription, but to which subscribers can purchase tickets ahead of the general public. The presentation lasted about an hour.

Whether that's Silo City Rocks, The Pierce Arrow Building, Statler City or many more...the ALT Theater is one of the more unique performance spaces that I've set foot in. Finding the actual Theater itself is a bit of a challenge. It's on Great Arrow Ave (making a right from Elmwood) and since the Pierce Arrow Building is so huge, it may take a while to find the actual door to the Theater. The entrance to get it is adjacent to the one of the parking lots. You then have to get up to the third floor to find your way into the actual performance space (lots of signage is helpful!). How amazing it is that a former luxury car assembled their vehicles in this building? And now it's home to two Theater spaces (ALT and Subversive), a film studio and hosts incredible events such as the Mass Appeal fashion show? I'm gushing about the Pierce Arrow building being put to good use, but let's get back to the ALT. It dubs itself as a black box Theater, although the show that I saw here ended up almost being setup as a proscenium of sorts, which shows that there is flexibility with the way you can use the space and engage the audience. Surprisingly, it was pretty warm here (The Pierce Arrow Building is nearly 133,000 square feet so most parts of it are not heated or accessible). It's focus is on experimental Theater (self-proclaimed as a hub for experimentation and innovation). The sound and acoustics were wired well for this particular show. One of the challenges is actually finding the space and navigating the Pierce Arrow Building (I actually got lost as I was trying to get out of the building and ended up in some creepy maintenance rooms), but it's part of the fun. You practically get a crash course in Urban Exploration when you go see a show here. If you've never experienced the ALT or the Pierce Arrow Building in any form, I urge you to check out their shows and find one that you think you'd enjoy!

The West Herr Riviera Theatre used to have a real, hometown nostalgic feel to it. It used to be a…read moreplace of magic. Now, it's just a cash cow. I got this email basically warning me that all gift card transactions will incur a $3 fee. Is this fair? Absolutely not. How gross. Aside from this, I can't really say my experiences there recently have been great; the bar overcharges for drinks and the bartenders automatically set the card reader to a 20% tip on your beverages. I'm not kidding. They rush you to pay for your drinks if you're using credit so as to distract you from the automatic tip setting. If you don't catch it and change it, you're screwed. I don't mind tipping, I just don't like a place using scummy practices like this and essentially forcing you into tipping. Also...notice the lack of diversity in their show lineups: Mostly tribute bands. That's fine but like...there used to be variety, there used to be so much more. Anyway, I'm leaving this review as a life-long NT resident who misses the old Riv. It was truly magic.

It was a great time, and only $5 a person. We could get a beer or glass of boxed wine for a $3 donation, making for a fun, inexpensive date night relative to other venues. The plays are $20-$25, which is the typical price for theatre in WNY. It's a more intimate setting. Fewer seats and closer to the stage. They specialize in more edgy, thought-provoking shows that you aren't likely to see at the more conventional playhouses. There's other events like Dirty Love during the year, as well.
