Not really a review, just a report about Dipson Amherst Theatre's Secret Cinema, for Tuesday June…read more9, 2026. Because I've gone to Regal's Monday Mystery Movie a few times, I thought I'd compare the two events. IDK when the next Mystery Movie will be, but last night the next Secret Cinema was said to be scheduled for July 14. That would be Bastille Day, if I'm not mistaken, so maybe the movie will be an old French film, or something set in France. Maybe The Pink Panther. No way to know in advance. I did find out on June 8 that Secret Cinema does not show new movies, but went anyway. (The TCM channel is one of my favorites.) Last night The Wizard of Oz was shown on the big screen, after a short talk about the film. Tickets for Secret Cinema are $10 and concessions are half price. Or maybe that's just for popcorn. I'm not sure because all I got to drink was a 20oz bottle of Aquafina, which was $5.50. If you enjoy old movies, "old" being anything from vintage to classic, you will want to check out Dipson Amherst's Secret Cinema. Always a Tuesday night.

The theater replaced their seats with the comfy recliner seats, but they are beginning to show some wear sooner than I would have thought. It is still very comfortable, but they do need to stay on top of the tears. "A stitch in time....". My other negative is that I went today, "Bargain Tuesday", expecting an $8.00 ticket. It was $10.00. I think it may be worth it to drive a little further to a larger chain theater where Bargain Tuesday is actually a bargain. P.S. I enjoyed the movie.

I've seen them operating registers and serving food while all the other cashiers are taking care of other customers. Thank you for getting in there and keeping the lines moving! Aside from that, the theaters have always been clean when I go, more importantly, the restrooms are too. What I love, love is that there are recliner seats in every stadium and the distance apart from the back and front seats is PERFECT! I'm one of those people that doesn't like people kicking my seat. I don't want to feel like someone else is right on top of me and these seats are great. They're also numbered so for blockbusters, you should totally use their app and reserve your seats. For those who want to relax with a beer or wine, they have that too. When you walk in, go straight to the register for your tickets and food. I think it would be cooler if there was a register dedicated to "tickets only" instead of also taking peoples food order (you know, for people not buying popcorn and drinks) but I understand they're trying to make use of every register and not overstaff to save money, it's all cool. I'm just thankful there's still a person doing the job and not a robot or Kiosk that doesn't work. Lol Lastly, I also like the location of this theater, it's in its own area so there's no other traffic incoming from stores or restaurants, it's just sitting there by itself. Also in the area are Walmart, Aldi's Wegmans, Applebee's and several fast food locations like Five Guys and Ted's.

Because you can see a movie for $2.50 Monday-Thursday and only $3.00 Friday-Sunday. Don't get me wrong, it's nothing special when you walk through the front door but it has everything you could possibly need here to enjoy a movie, including overpriced popcorn and pop! (Which is 50% on Tuesdays). The actual theater itself was extremely comfortable thanks to the big recliners and the fact that no matter where you sit, you will have an an awesome seat. Overall, this is an incredible bargain compared to other theaters. I got this email basically warning me that all gift card transactions will incur a $3 fee. Is this fair? Absolutely not. How gross. Aside from this, I can't really say my experiences there recently have been great; the bar overcharges for drinks and the bartenders automatically set the card reader to a 20% tip on your beverages. I'm not kidding. They rush you to pay for your drinks if you're using credit so as to distract you from the automatic tip setting. If you don't catch it and change it, you're screwed. I don't mind tipping, I just don't like a place using scummy practices like this and essentially forcing you into tipping. Also...notice the lack of diversity in their show lineups: Mostly tribute bands. That's fine but like...there used to be variety, there used to be so much more. Anyway, I'm leaving this review as a life-long NT resident who misses the old Riv. It was truly magic.

The staff are always so helpful and genuinely seem happy to be there. I am not a big theatre person so it's great to have them there to make sure I am in the right place and not committing any theatre mistakes. The concessions here are pretty decently priced. There is a good variety of drinks and snack options. As someone who generally goes to the movies more than the theatre, I was pleasantly surprised with the options. This space is beautiful. It makes you feel like you've stepped back in time but in the best way. The architecture alone is a reason to come check out this spot, but stay for a show and enjoy!

But regardless of this, there is now a New Phoenix. It's a pretty, interesting little theatre house on a tiny little backstreet in Allentown. It is the kind of place you'd be unlikely to ever find unless you knew what you were looking for. On the inside it is cozy and sweet. I'd like to play here sometime. It can fit up to about 100 people. On Thursdays they don't even charge you, it's donations only, to see whatever is playing at the time. All of this, and specifically the lime green exterior which really gets my juices flowing, adds up to a 5 star rating. Much better than the New Peanuts Theatre. That place is nuts.

Its tagline is "Buffalo's Premier Alternative Theatre" and although you will find contemporary, perhaps 'alternative' plays being performed here (ie Sarah Ruhl's, The Vibrator Play); you can also expect classics such as Shakespeare and Robert E Lee's "Inherit the Wind." The interior is of the space is not flashy, nor is it meant to be - rather it's a very practical place for productions. The space is extremely intimate and you'll be sure to see a lot of artists from your local scene here. Seating is often from all four sides, which makes for an enthralling experience where you feel as if you're a part of the action, not unlike the Irish Classical Theatre. Thursday is what-you-can-pay nights so if you're a student who is low on cash, come on Thursday and contribute whatever you can afford. This is a community Theatre of sorts with a very bootstrap feel to it. The reception area is upstairs, in an attic of sorts where they sell water and drinks during intermission. Standing up there, I've often felt as if I was standing in someone's house; part of Buffalo's small Theatre community. The creative director of the Theatre is a really great guy, very friendly and passionate about the arts. He cares about putting up great shows and giving local actors a place to express their craft; it shows! I love coming here and can't wait to see their next play.

Whether that's Silo City Rocks, The Pierce Arrow Building, Statler City or many more...the ALT Theater is one of the more unique performance spaces that I've set foot in. Finding the actual Theater itself is a bit of a challenge. It's on Great Arrow Ave (making a right from Elmwood) and since the Pierce Arrow Building is so huge, it may take a while to find the actual door to the Theater. The entrance to get it is adjacent to the one of the parking lots. You then have to get up to the third floor to find your way into the actual performance space (lots of signage is helpful!). How amazing it is that a former luxury car assembled their vehicles in this building? And now it's home to two Theater spaces (ALT and Subversive), a film studio and hosts incredible events such as the Mass Appeal fashion show? I'm gushing about the Pierce Arrow building being put to good use, but let's get back to the ALT. It dubs itself as a black box Theater, although the show that I saw here ended up almost being setup as a proscenium of sorts, which shows that there is flexibility with the way you can use the space and engage the audience. Surprisingly, it was pretty warm here (The Pierce Arrow Building is nearly 133,000 square feet so most parts of it are not heated or accessible). It's focus is on experimental Theater (self-proclaimed as a hub for experimentation and innovation). The sound and acoustics were wired well for this particular show. One of the challenges is actually finding the space and navigating the Pierce Arrow Building (I actually got lost as I was trying to get out of the building and ended up in some creepy maintenance rooms), but it's part of the fun. You practically get a crash course in Urban Exploration when you go see a show here. If you've never experienced the ALT or the Pierce Arrow Building in any form, I urge you to check out their shows and find one that you think you'd enjoy!
