The menu August 2026

This place has a lot of charm. Plenty of seating outside and some seating inside. A lot of character, friendly baristas. Bakery goods are available. My brown sugar iced latte was good and flavorful and not too milky. Could use maybe an extra shot for my taste, but I like them strong.

Stopped by this cafe after a pilates session. There wasnt a line but people sitting inside and outside. Got a brown sugar vanilla latte since I havent tried a coffee with that kind of flavor. It was between that or a mocha. Latte came out kinda quickly. Coffee was smooth and at the end could taste notes of the brown sugar. Wouldn't mind trying their mocha.

I've been here many a time and I must say Hal's never disappoints. Today was no exception. I had an hour to read before my husband picked me up. I plopped myself at a table by the window- the natural light was inviting today. I held my hot latte in a navy blue ceramic cup with saucer and placed it on the small wooden table with my book closeby. Mmmm the taste of the cinnamon as it hit my lips was what I needed to settle into one of my fav leisurely activities. It was the perfect winter afternoon. A bit chilly out but I was warmed by the sun shining through the windows and the latte in my tummy.

Cute coffee shop with housemade syrups and strong coffee! The menu also has teas and housemade lemonade. Service was friendly and my drinks were delicious!

I got the brown sugar vanilla latte and it was so good! It wasn't overly sweet which i appreciate because as much as i love a syrup i like coffee more! It gets packs but the service was quick and amazing everyone was very nice. They have some inside and outside seating but it is still very small!

What a cute coffee shop located in downtown Albany. Husband and I were in the area to try out some hand rolls and decided to go for a walk. The staff here are super friendly. I remember there being counter seats facing the street inside and did not go further in to see if there are other tables in the back. It is a pretty small location so be aware of that. There are plenty of seats outside. We got a drip coffee and a Lavender Latte. I can't speak for the drip coffee because I'm not into black coffee at all and didn't try it. The Lavender Latter was delicious and just what I needed during our cold walk.

My go-to place for morning coffee! Great pastries and espresso drinks. Stop by for a great experience.

I mean, not sure if this is all in my head because of the intermittent fasting I've been on, but I am enjoying their latte more than I use to. It just tastes more creamy and milky and I love that! It's a cute place that has good pastries. There's indoor and outdoor seating and the service is solid!

Hal's office is a cute, somewhat hidden spot on Solano, one that I seemed to have missed up until this point. Their cinnamon star anise latte was good, but somewhat watery with the oat milk they used, leaving me somewhat unsatisfied. However, the ambiance and the vibes of the place made up for it, along with their fluffy morning bun. I would come back here to try a basic latte or cappuccino to get a better sense of the coffee.

An stylish coffee shop in Albany. The coffee was decent, and the staff were friendly. It seems to be a popular local spot.

This place is always busy! We went there around 4p.m. on a sunny Friday afternoon and there were a lot of people inside and outside! Coffee's not strong, so may need to ask for a second shot next time. Customer service is always on point. Mocha is my go-to drink here.

Great outside seating is its strength on a sunny day. Sadly, mocha and chai lattes were weak and small ($6 for 12 oz) to our taste.

New flowers and tables today!

Always great service. Parking is mostly diagonal, but prepare to parallel if that's a thing Starter Bakery is moving in nearby. Baked treat selections are always excellent at Hal's.

Lovely natural wine bar with a great parklet. We had a fabulous chenin blanc and a delicious charcuterie board. There was even live music.

That, however, shouldn't detract from the personalized experience you'd likely receive with how small the coffee bar is. If you're expecting something more permanent this coffee shop is more like a temporary coffee cart that has roots in the back corner of this gift shop On the whole this place despite the hidden location has folks very much eager to bring specialty coffee to anybody interested. They have a large selection of relatively high end coffee in the likes of Geisha from Panama and Ethiopian coffees. Additionally, they're the only place I've ever seen across the US that is showcasing any coffee grown in China which is nice to see as that allows more exploration into how the terroir affects the taste of coffee For my first time here I came with a small group of coffee enthusiasts so we tried a selection of their Alo Main Station (notes of Sweet Orange, Bergamont, and Peach Oolong Tea), Finca Santa Maria (notes of Cherry, Mango, and Berry Jam), and Lerida Loma Washed (notes of White Floral, Mandarin Orange, and Longan) Each cup was uniquely different from each other but arguably the most enjoyed was their cheapest option in the Alo Main Station at $9. Each cup seemed completely different and may seem pretentious to say but they did have sweeter notes that you'd be very unlikely to taste from your well known coffee chains. This place definitely caters to the coffee enthusiasts in a way where even my group wasn't quite near the level of but it had a great atmosphere, nice outdoor seating, and staff who were very passionate about their craft If anything, I would probably come back as they do elevate coffee for those who are unaware of coffee coming from China but that coffee doesn't need to taste bitter, burnt, or chocolatey. The cups here were more like tasting a mellowed fruit juice but it just happens to be coffee. That said, unless you are eager to try specialty coffee this place may seem overpriced as their pour overs are between $9 - $25 which heavily differs from most other coffee shops. Having Masterpiece provide a glimpse of the specialty coffee scene within the Bay Area is still a welcome blessing as it has a similar vibe to specialty coffee shops you'd experience in Asia

Since my husband was doing an iced Shiro, I went with a hot version of the Kuro. We both got whole milk rather than oat milk. While I loved both options the Kuro was definitely my favorite and did not disappoint. If you've ever had Arsicault, then you'll understand what I mean when I say this place is a true contender. And the best part? You don't have to travel far, pay that toll bridge, or deal with expensive gas. Save all that and give this place a try! Do note: Canelé -- available Friday to Sunday Pastel de nata (Portuguese tarts) -- available Saturday & Sunday What I've tried: Croissant -- Yum, yum, yum! From end to end, it has that perfectly crunchy exterior, and not a hollow bite in sight. Every bite is flaky, buttery, and satisfying. Chocolate Croissant -- A must if you love chocolate. Rich, flaky, and indulgent. Almond Croissant -- Another delicious contender. Nutty, sweet, and absolutely worth it. Apricot Croissant -- Not bad at all. The apricot adds a nice touch without overpowering the pastry. Bostock -- This one was a miss for me. It looked beautiful, but it was missing that little finesse that makes you want another bite. Gâteau au Fromage (Basque Cheesecake) -- A bit pricey, but so worth the splurge because they really know how to nail it. One bite and you won't be able to stop until it's gone. Pastel de Nata -- Crispy edges with a delicate, creamy, and delicious filling. That crunch is everything. Canelé -- These babies sell fast, so make sure to get there when they open. I love the crunchy exterior paired with that soft, custardy inside. Yum, yum, yum! Chocolate Fondant -- Not bad, but not my favorite. I've definitely had better elsewhere. Chocolate Hazelnut Cake -- The flavor was nice, but I found this one just a tad dry. Bottom line: While not everything was a home run, their croissants, canelés, Basque cheesecake, and pastel de nata are absolutely worth coming back for. A hidden gem that delivers big on flavor without the long drive. Definitely worth the visit!

We tried several of the specialty lattes and were into them all. Particularly memorable to me was the Jaffa Orange latte. I had to order a pourover here and loved the experience. The barista was very precise in brewing and explained a bit about the coffee before serving it to me in an elegant glass. I got the pink bourbon from Palestina, Colombia that had notes of pink lemonade and rhubarb. It was well brewed and tasty but my sense is that the beans for pourover could be roasted lighter to get more of the fruit flavor out. I was really looking for a juicier pourover and feel like they have the right bean and the right brewers, just need to roast the coffee a little differently. It's a bit nitpicky though, because honestly, it was the best pourover "experience" I've had in the Bay Area, by far. I think this is also one of the most beautiful coffee shops I've visited. The art is very thoughtful, and the shop is clean and organized. It feels cozy. I can't wait to come back here.

The menu is pretty extensive, and everything sounded so delicious. We settled on the "Blackberries in Napa" summer mocktail, which they were able to make with oat milk (although whipped cream was still made with regular). It was the perfect cold beverage for a hot day in Berkeley. Right mix of bitterness from the espresso, creaminess from the blackberry whip, sweetness (and the slightest pinch of earthiness) from the blackberry-sumac jam at the bottom, and refreshing from the mint leaf at the top. The dried black mulberries were a nice touch also. Would love to come back and try everything else and support this Palestinian-owned business more often!

Worth waiting in that line? For me personally, no, but it was a well made latte and quite smooth. Was it the best latte I have ever had? No but it was a good one and I think it would be easier to discern the true quality with a straight espresso shot or even a cappuccino. I like my lattes to have a little more character from the beans but well made. My favorite thing about it was actually the temperature. It wasn't crazy hot so you could actually enjoy it instantly. Some may want it hotter but for me it was ideal. They do have seasonal drinks including a pumpkin spice latte for fall and solid selection of non coffee drinks. The almond croissant I had (not baked by them I don't think) was good but a bit too crispy and over baked . I think I have been spoilt by the very excellent croissants of San Francisco and have yet to find an amazing one in the East Bay but it was clearly made with good butter and lots of almonds. Plenty of seating although every inside table was taken by people; some outside tables were open. They also have a solid selection of local beans for sale. Overall, a solid shop but don't come if you're in a hurry.
