I just found out about halibut House I went over. I had some fish it was unbelievable I went back this morning and I had to breakfast. It was excellent very fresh. Everything is very good. I'm trying to hold myself back so I don't go every day ha ha very good you will not be disappointed. read more

Found tucked amongst a row of restaurants at a nearby Costco, Halibut Fish and Chips opened after the Ontario government loosened it's restrictions before summer. Fish and chips is a popular hot dish consisting of fried fish in crispy batter, served with chips. The dish originated in England. We got this considering this was their speciality. We ordered halibut fish battered and chips. Other options included cod. I've been here a couple of times since it opened. The first time the COVID rules were a bit different and the gave you one of those devices that beeped when ready and you had to wait in the car until then. I was advised it would take about 15 minutes for my order, so I was happy to wait in the car. The first time I went I ordered a fish and chips meal with halibut (because it's called Halibut House so I figured that's their specialty), and an additional piece of cod. I wanted to compare the two to see which one was better. I liked the flavour of the cod better, less fishy for some reason. I know, I know, they're fish, so obviously they're fishy, but I still liked the cod better, more moist, tender. I heard about their house tartar sauce so I asked for it as well, but when I opened my takeout bag, I got the packets of tartar sauce that did not taste great, so I just ate it with the slices of fresh lemon. I thought both pieces fish were fried perfectly, nice and crispy, but the fries were not crispy, maybe because they were sitting underneath the fish. They didn't have any salt on them, either, so I added some salt at home and transferred them from the cardboard takeout container to a bowl and poured the malt vinegar packets on them. The second time I went I ordered a fish and chips meal again but with just one piece of cod. The fish and chips were both the same as the first time I had time, consistent. I don't remember what the coleslaw was like, but it was more on the vinegar side and not creamy, which I actually like better, and not too sour, either. I asked for the house tartar sauce again this time and they filled a small container. It was great, with just a touch of sweetness. Definitely better than the packets and highly recommended. You don't need much. I also ordered some fried clams, which I didn't see on the menu the last time. They came with seafood sauce, which I don't normally care for, so I just ate them with lemon and a bit of the tartar. They were good, crispy as well, but some pieces were just too small to taste the clam. I will definitely be back and this is now my go-to fish and chips spot in the area. Originally, we went because they had the ad where they were doing a buy one, get one 50% deal, but we learned quickly that on Sundays they have a great deal where you can get a piece of fish and chips for $9. We ended up getting 5 of those deals for take out for the family. We had called in and went in to pick up the items and they were great with social distancing. All of their employees had face masks and asked us to move to a space that was further away from everyone else to maintain social distancing. When the food was brought to us, we were asked if wanted any extra vinegar, tartar, and lemons. They were very, very generous. When we got home to try the food, the fish was absolutely lovely. It was deep fried well, with a very tasty batter. It was a huge piece of fish with a very generous helping of fries. They have specials on Sunday, Monday and Wednesday. "Check Your TakeOut Bags" A friend Recommended Halibut House to me. I went on Wednesday for $10 Cod. Outstanding. The fish & chips were probably the best I've ever had; and I've travelled. The portions were good without being ridiculous. The fries are spectacular as well, and something I really appreciated was that they leave you a bottle of the (I believe made in house) Tartar Sauce. Most places give you a small cup, that never seems to be enough, but these guys let you take care of yourself. Fantastic. I love it so much I immediately had to call another fish and chips lover (my mom) and offer to drop her off one on my way home. I asked my server if she would kindly give me two portions of the tartar sauce with my takeout order. She assured me she would. (Read my title again) Dropped off fish and chips, and when playing it for my mom, saw that it was just fish and ships in the box, with no tartar. People forget stuff from time to time, but when someone asks you specifically for something, and you assure them... right ? If you have a chance to try it, it's amazing. Fish is always fresh, and it's evident with every order received. Service is fast and friendly. Prices for the dishes are pretty fair, especially when you consider the portion size. The dish they're known for - the halibut - is HUGE. Our household observes the proper portion size when we eat our meals. Even though you get one piece of fish in an order, it's big enough that it lasts 2 meals for one person, or one meal split between 2 people. This is especially great on Sundays and Mondays when it's $9! I don't recommend ordering ahead, or getting delivery, as it's best to go to the restaurant, place your order, and wait. we found this out the hard way when we ordered ahead for salmon. Despite arriving 20 minutes after we placed the order, expecting it to be ready, they drop it when you arrive so that's it's fresh. So, now we just place our order when we arrive. The have a paging system that let's you now when your order is ready, so that you can wait in your car until it goes off. I look forward to a time when we can eat in the restaurant again. read more

Whatever you do, don't visit the Halibut House on Wootten Way North and Hwy 7; the service there is bad, not to mention, the waitress, who appears to be one of the owners, being very rude, and apparently does not conform to Canadian ethics. My wife and I visited this franchise for breakfast recently, and while standing in line to be seated, we could see how busy the place was (75% full), with only one waitress serving the patrons, and she was was very busy nearby the kitchen. The chef, seeing that we were standing there, told us to have a seat at one of the open tables. When the waitress finally came to serve us, she exclaimed, " next time wait to be seated". Puzzled at her remark, I explained that the chef told us to have a seat, to which she replied, "if you can't wait, then you can leave". I told her that the chef had given us te okay to sit at the table, and again, she reiterated that we can leave if we didn't like what she was saying. I told her that she was very rude, and went over to where the chef was to have him confirm what I was saying; the waitress came over at the same time, and gave the chef an earful @%#. I found this distasteful, with the apparent waitress/owner having no manners at all for her customers, and employees. We walked out, and had our breakfast elsewhere. This type of behaviour will ruin Halibut House reputation. Please address the issue. read more

Friendly staff, portion size decent , however, fish was greasy and the fries tasted like they have been reheated several times. A bit disappointing for a 30$ meal ( tip and tax included). Seafood platter ordered. They did offer to fix it , however, I was already home and not heading back out. Thanks for offer though. A little disappointed since this was my first visit. Ate here based on the 5 star reviews. I'm a maritimer and this wasn't an impressive fish and chips. if You want a thin piece of fish in thick greasy batter this is your joint. My husband had chips with his and I had the Greek salad. Even the fries & salad were D grade vegetables. For the money, if you want a great tasting, lightly battered hunk of haddock with fresh fries or a grade A Greek salad, for the same 2 piece price, go to Lapointe's in bells corner. It's much closer to what you'd get in the maritimes and the grease doesn't sit and ache in your stomach. read more

Me and my wife went to their new location in Stittsville on Terry Fox drive for breakfast and the food was good, what else can you expect from a 4.95$ breakfast. They weren't terribly busy so why was the service slow, anyhow our experience had been good enough that we decided to return for dinner that night with friends. That night the restaurant was fairly quiet, the service slightly better. I ordered the grilled halibut with seasonal fresh vegetables. Two Words.....Frozen and Gross. Saw the ad in The Ottawa Sun. Yesterday wife was in the neighborhood and dropped by to get a takeout order. Get 50% off second order. I had the Cod & Fries (@$13.50). Nice thick large piece of cod, lightly battered, with a good portion of fried and a small coleslaw. Heated it up in our air fryer. Definitely tasty !
