The food was really tasty. I do give that a 5 star. The people were dressed casually and to be fair, you cannot dress with anything you don't want to get stained since the food is literally placed on the actual table and some things like the corn on the cob, squirts out! That was quite interesting and different but we had our own bowl of rice dumped in front of us. They give us bibs and rubber gloves and you definitely need them! The waitress forgot our water and she wasn't very personable..... at all. She was likely stressed out since it was extremely busy. It's OVERLY crowded there with extremely narrow places to walk between tables and seats so you really need to keep that in mind especially if you're in a wheelchair and if you are, you're definitely not getting past any table to get to your seat. Also, they had no air conditioning so all 3 of us were sweating terribly so I'd call in to be sure there is working A/C. read more

The Captain's Boil - Our table in the corner! - Cajun/Creole Near Me - Ottawa, Ontario

I was craving seafood boil, so I ordered in through Uber Eats! I ordered the following: Calamari CA$14.99 Shrimp CA$21.99 Cajun, Mild, with 2 sides Crawfish CA$28.00 Cajun, Mild with 2 sides Seafood Fried Rice CA$18.99 Mix and Match CA$22.99 Protein Shrimp & Clams Captain's Boil with 2 sides Mix and Match CA$22.99 Protein Shrimp & Mussels Cajun with 2 sides Cajun Fries CA$8.99 Shrimp Basket CA$17.99 Seafood Fried Rice CA$18.99 Subtotal $156.93 Service fee $0.49 Tax $20.98 Tip $20.00 Total: $202.40 Let me start with the calamari, it was nicely fried, tender and not chewy. The shrimp was nice and flavorful but the Cajun was too dense, maybe next time I'll choose another style. The Crawfish was a big disappointment unfortunately I had a few and threw the rest! It tasted funny! Shrimp & clams were my favorite, the Captain's Boil sauce was really good. Shrimp and muscles were also cooked perfectly but again the Cajun was too dense and spicy although I asked for mild. Cajun Fries were OK, a bit soggy and not crunchy. Shrimp Basket was not all that! I won't order it again for sure. It was so greasy for my liking. Seafood Fried Rice was OK, nothing special. Will I order in from there again? Probably not but I will go in person and give it another shot and try new things from their menu. read more

The Moody Foody - Seafood Boil or Seafood *Spoil*? I've always loved coming here to satisfy my seafood boil cravings, but after my last visit... I'm *shook*. Ordered a snow crab and shrimp bag for both myself and my fiancé, and right away, the crab was way too salty. No big deal, right? Wrong. Because I'm pretty sure I ate a bad one--cue five *brutal* days of food poisoning. Now, I *want* to give this place another shot, but honestly? I'm terrified. When seafood is fresh, it's unbeatable, but when it's off... well, I don't need another horror story. Hoping this was just a one-off, but they *really* need to step up their quality control. Proceed with caution, seafood lovers. read more

I go there every Saturday at noon. Best seafood restaurant in ottawa. The service is quick and great staff.

We generally have a decent experience here. The last couple of years, we've mostly done takeout because of COVID. Our last takeout order was for Mother's Day and it was okay. I got the mussels and shrimp. I ordered the non-spicy specifically so that I could share it with my daughter. I normally order a medium. Unfortunately, it was definitely a "mild". There was definitely some spice to it and it was tough for my daughter to eat. We also ordered the calamari. The batter was definitely a lot thicker and different than we remembered it to be. Unfortunately, it was not as good as we remembered it to be. They also served it with ketchup? We got a container of ketchup. We were also disappointed to not get any utensils or supplies. There were no napkins, gloves, bibs, etc. we normally get those unless that has changed. read more

The Captain's Boil - Cajun/Creole Near Me - Ottawa, Ontario

I had lunch at the Captain's Boil and overall it was good. My main complaint is that the food was really oily. When I mentioned this to my server after the meal, she told me that I can always ask for no oil, because they pour oil into the boil. I wish I had known this before ordering! I got the Sizzling Plate ($12) which comes with 2 clams, 2 mussels, 2 crawfish, 2 shrimp, and your choice of teriyaki chicken or teriyaki basa (I choose the fish, but in retrospect, should have had the chicken). It also comes with a mound of white rice. This plate is only available before 4pm. The mussels were huge. Clams were normal sized. The shrimp and crawfish still had their shells on and the head and legs were still attached. This made for a messy and slightly creepy eating experience, lol. The pieces of fish (I got 6) were battered and deep fried and were extremely oily. In fact, everything in the boil was really oily. I believe that the chicken is not battered nor fried. I think I would have enjoyed this option better. Nonetheless, the flavour of the sauce (I got mild) was good, albeit too salty for my liking. The rice was satisfactory, no complaints there. I like how the meal is served on a hot plate, so your meal stays hot the entire time. It comes with a warning label that the plate is over 200 degrees Celsius and to be careful. Service was excellent. Brooke was my server and she was a doll. Very friendly and so attentive. There was a man there too, who looked to be the owner or at the least a manager or supervisor, and he too was very nice. He brought out my meal and told me what everything was and warned me about the temperature of the plate. He also asked me if I wanted a water re-fill as soon as my cup was empty. Decor is fun nautical/marine theme. They have pictures of squid and clams on the walls. I like that there is a hand-washing station at the back of the restaurant near the bar, so you can wash your hands before and after your meal (it's away from the washroom, which is great for so many reasons, and there's no door that you have to open so you don't contaminate your freshly washed hands). I love this. I want every single restaurant to have this, lol. Their specialty is the seafood boil which is served in a plastic bag. You put on gloves and a bib and go to town. If this is not your jam, they have plenty of meals served on dishes to be eaten with utensils, so fear not. The Crab Cake Sliders and Soft Shell Crab Tacos (both come with Cajun fries) looked really good and I debated getting those instead of the Sizzling Plate. I would love to see some more vegetables on the menu, and some lighter fare (i.e. not deep-fried, or covered in mayo/sauce, or so oily/greasy). Most of the vegetables are add-ons to the boil; if you're not having a boil, the only vegetable is corn, which is not the healthiest of vegetables. There are no salads on the menu. If you're a vegetarian, I think the only thing you can eat is fries and garlic bread, and I guess the corn if you have it without the fried lobster bits that are usually sprinkled on top. The Captain's Boil is not for those on a diet, lol. This place would get 5 stars from me if the food wasn't so oily and salty, and if they had more vegetables and healthier options (like maybe some salads). The restaurant is in a strip mall, so there's lots of free parking. read more

Service was great here. Very friendly wait staff who were attentive. The food is the same as all the other captains boils, consistently flavourful and hot. read more

I've wanted to try this place for quite some time. And I'm scrambling for words to describe it but wow. Such a different experience from your regular seafood joint. There's no utensils, they provide you with gloves and a bib and you dive it. It's all market priced but much more reasonable than what I was expecting. We got the sailors feast with shrimp, in the Captain Boils sauce - medium and it was fantastic. Way too much food for two people but I'm not complaining about it . We had the opportunity to try several dishes and they were all great. The restaurant was very busy on a Saturday, and now I understand why. Fantastic service, great food and an experience like no other. Edit: my only regret is not getting a picture of all the food. It was so good we just had to dive in!! read more

Alrighty definitely a fun place to go eat.. it's a whole experience! You get ur apron , the gloves and a big bucket to put ur shellfish in! So basically you pick ur shellfish, ur sides, ur spices and it all comes in a plastic (biodegradable) bag. They also thankfully had fish and chips and chicken tenders for the little ones! It's definitely a mess to eat but a nice experience. Our server was super nice and helpful. And parking here is not an issue.. big parking lot . read more

My husband and I were so randomly passing by and wanted to try it. Since we used to have two same restaurants in Montreal, and both of them were closed permanently. We saw the daily special board outside the restaurant, and that's probably one of the reasons too. Sunday special is that the shrimp, mussel and clam are 12$ per pound( instead of 14$). We had two pounds. One with Cajun mild and the other house special sauce with medium heat. I added lotus root for 5$. I think it's so worthy. A lot of them and the texture was wonderful. For the sauce, I like the Cajun mild better. Too much heat will cover the taste of seafood I believe. The corn sucked a lot of oil but it's essential in the dish. We also had a calamari 3some. It's tasty. Looks small but really filling. Good price and warm service. I would like to come back. read more

Love this place... price is a bit high... but where can you get seafood like this. The king crab for the cost is not impressive... snow crab is... so if your ok to out in some effort for your meal... u can order 2 snowcrabs and still save a couple bucks vs. the king crab.. which I got 1 leg. Clams were great too! A must is the corn (in the bag) If your a seafood lover... go here! read more

Well, I really enjoyed my experience tonight. The restaurant was a bit understaffed for how busy it was but once we got our food, it was all forgotten. I went with my parents and wasn't sure how they would react to getting their food in plastic bag but everyone had fun. We ordered the main combo: three seafood, fried rice, Cajun fries, Alaskan crab legs, and pops. It's well set up with a bucket to dispose of shells and with scissors to cut up the shell. The flavours were nice (we tried the Captain's Boil sauce on the mussels, clams and shrimp combo and garlic butter on the Alaska crab legs). You can adjust the level of spiciness and have a choice of 4 sauces: Cajun, lemon pepper, garlic butter or Captain's Boil (i.e., all 3 mixed together). I also ordered a steamed corn and it was really fresh. The fried rice was full of shrimps and scallops. My daughter ordered a fish and chips for kids and loved it. We will be back. read more

With the number of my check-ins here, clearly I love it this place. I usually always get the shrimp in Captain's boil sauce in fire with a corn and extra sauce (about $15). And then we usually order Cajun fries and steamed rice for the table. Couple of pointers- If you think fire spice is not fiery for you, they have another spic level called volcano which is not in the menu but you can ask for it. But mind you, it really is something! You can also ask them to not add oil in the bag if you prefer a slightly healthier version. I personally don't mind the oil. It's like ordering Diet Coke with a greasy burger - it's not helping anyone. This location also has daily specials. My personal favourite is the Wednesday deal which is half price on a 1 pound bag with a purchase of a pint of beer ($6.50) or two non alcoholic beverages ($5). We went for this on a Wednesday night and at the time, they had another deal on top of this - a free pound if your bill is above $40 before tax. The service is always great here. It's usually quite busy on weekends but weekdays are pretty empty. read more

I must admit, when I first heard of Captain's Boil, I was worried to think how much I would be paying to leave satisfied. We went in for a random lunch on the weekend, and I was pleasantly surprised. For lunch on a weekend, the place was busy but not crazy, we were able to get a table very quickly. The waitress was very helpful, and after learning that it was our first time, she made sure to explain the menu. I ordered the calamari 3-ways, and 1lb mixed bag (shrimp, clams and mussels) with fire garlic butter and potatoes. I was not disappointed in the size of the bag or their description of 'fire' sauce, it was surprisingly hot! The calamari was very good, and the food came out quick. There was more than enough in the mixed bag to get me full. All in all, would definitely visit again! read more

The seafood is delicious, and it's a messy way to eat. I just feel that they use a lot of plastic bags, which can be changed to some reusable containers. read more

Ohh the mussels!!! They were enormous. I also got lotus root which was excellent. Very large portions. But hella messy! Wear something you don't care about. In terms of flavour, the spice mix they use for the "captains boil" was perfectly spicy. Reminded me a bit of Kerala fish masala. read more

Only come here for the sizing plate but it's amazing and great value. They only serve it at lunch though I wish it was all day.

Really nice atmosphere in the hunt club store, only 10 minutes away fro m Carleton University. Horrible!!! Everything is served in a plastic bag and you eat with plastic bag gloves. Seems odd for a few reasons. 1 - it's not cooked in the bag so why bother transferring it to a bag. 2 - in this day and age where most people and restaurants are more conscious about their waste and carbon footprint, how could a seafood restaurant happily contribute disposable plastics into landfills and eventually the ocean..therefore effecting their menu supply. Am I right?! Our waitress was out to lunch. Asked if we were ready to order, we all said "no we need a few more minutes" she just stood there and after 10 secs asked if we were ready now PS. Do not order the lobster roll. Least amount of food I've ever been served ever. I had to order an additional side of fries. Will never go back read more

It's a great place to go if you are into fresh seafood. They have various sauces and tastes to choose from, so my friend, who loves spicy food, and me, who can't take as much spice but still remained friend with her, both get to satisfy our need. It's very close to costco and a couple other shops, so I find it a great quick tour for lunch or dinner when stopping by costco for gas or grocery. Btw用了一下新上的中文微信菜单，真是很与时俱进！手动点赞 read more

Poor quality food. So salty, couldn't eat it. Felt like we were at a seafood "chucky cheese"

Was our first time on a recommendation. Was as messy as all reviews state but in a good way - the novelty. Had the shrimp served in a bowl as didn't care for the bag idea. What really made the experience worthwhile was our server, Dija, who took the time to explain the menu, asked what our seafood passions are and told us of the Wednesday night special. She knew to hold the order of snow crab, thank goodness cause once we had the huge shrimp; we were full. It was awkward using the one size fits all gloves, so took them off and got hands covered in sauce. Good thing they have a big sink, soap pump and absorbent paper towel in the far corner of the dining area. The dining area was clean, lots to look at and very friendly staff. We will be going back for the snow crab! read more

Okay the food was great but the service absolutely horrible. It's due to the fact that this food is being served out of ruby Tuesday kitchen. There needs to be a brand ambassador or manager there from the captains boil because the ruby Tuesday employers did not care to serve the food. Went with my husband and 2 toddlers. We were excited to go. But were disappointed after the dinner. Our waitress was awesome, other waitress girls were too busy standing behind the bar and talking to each other. Dungeness crab were great, shrimps and king crab legs are ok. but the captain boil seasoning mixture is bland and isn't really that tasty. They used butter to fry the rice even my toddlers won't eat it. They used disposable bowls cups, spoons, bags for seafoods, which we didn't like. Our bill was $130, not expensive considering there were seafoods. But Overall negative experience, don't like the taste, don't like all the plastic waste read more

Aight so Captain's Boil is overall brazy and overall delicious good food. But before y'all come here, be prepared for a dining experience, not just a regular dinner. The entire creole experience can be overwhelming for the regular diner, and the full bag can be lots of food. But I recommend getting dat half shrimp half mussels with a side okra and the captain's sauce or whatever it be called. But you know, if yous a fan of seafood I highly recommend!!!!!!!!! read more

First time at your restaurant this evening and it was by far the worst experience. We were in Halifax for the past week and enjoyed many lobsters rolls. Looking forward to a lobster roll tonight only to find it was lobster paste with a piece of lettuce and shredded cheese. It was the most discusting/disappointment meal. The waitress did replace it with 1 lb of shrimp which were equally as distasteful. I brought most of them home and they ended up in the garbage. Won't be returning. Will visit the mandarin rest. next door. Always a pleasant meal there. read more

Our first and last visit. My dinner was plopped in front of me in a plastic bag! Our drinks served in paper cups! No proper utensils! A large Slop bucket plopped in the middle of the table. Our waitress laughed as I started to cry with a bag of lousy food dropped in front of me. My kids felt ill after the fish and chips. The lobster was lousy, the chicken gross and rubbery. My husband, whose birthday we were celebrating, ordered the crawfish and okra. The okra was mushy and the crawfish tasted off and muddy. Paid 40 dollars per plate....major rip off. Not food but garbage already packaged in the garbage bag. The pirate theme consisted of balloons from a dollar store...the waitress had no proper training in behaviour, manners, or service. Major disappointment. read more

If I could give this place a negative -3 stars I would. Our waitress (Catlin J) could careless about its customers. Never came by. Received one dinner than 5 mins later the other showed up. Had to ask for utensils, plates..when it looked like we were done she came by again and asked if we needed anything and how are food was. We told her it was marginal...and that was being nice. So she walked away with a look of disgust at us. As we waited for the bill , she actually approached and threw it on the table and walked away. Food: I had the fish and chips...the fish is not fresh battered and the inside was cold in all 3 pcs and the batter was gummy and uncooked on the inside. The other dish ordered was Crab Cake sliders....bland and barely warm. The only edible part to this meal were the fries. Very disappointed by far. read more

Craving shrimp so we decided to give this new location a try. Sauce was still lacking compared to the Toronto locations but I didn't expect much after visiting the Elgin location last year. All was well except...I found a raw shrimp in my bag. I took off the head and found a semi translucent shrimp...I didn't think much of it, I thought it was the sauce or something but when I bit into it it felt like I bit into a raw octopus. It was the fishiest thing I've ever had. I really did not expect a half cooked shrimp in my bag...You think if they boil shrimp they should be able to boil then all right??? After all this white shrimp is definitely not sashimi grade and not sashimi sweet shrimp. Not to mention what kind of parasites could be in there. Confused and traumatized I flagged the waitress down. She was very apologetic and offered to cook me a new batch. I continued searching through my bag and found another shrimp that was half cooked. I told her again and she promised the new batch will be fine. So that was two shrimp in one bag that were almost raw. How does this pass food safety?? Especially in a seafood restaurant?? Unacceptable. I don't think we will be going back. The Elgin location was terrible enough. Check out my review for the Elgin location. read more

We were very interested when we saw this place and had to try it out. The only word that comes to mind is disappointment. My wife ordered a Lobster Roll and I had Fish & Chips. Both were bad choices. The Lobster Roll didn't have much Lobster and the Fish & Chips tasted like it had been frozen for a long time before it was served. It had no taste. The Tarter Sauce that was served with the Fish & Chips was awful. We both enjoyed a nice glass of lukewarm water to drink with our meal. The price was $35.00 including tip which was rather high for food that was not good. I would not recommend The Captains Boil or go back for a second time. read more

I loved the Captain's boil sauce. The flavour is absolutely amazing! Okra and lotus root great additions to the main seafood. Also, I recommend the Cajun seafood rice. My new favourite fried rice.
