We visited with a group of friends for Sunday lunch and had a table in the bar area, dogs are also welcome in the bar, we were dog sitting and little Henry was made very welcome. We all opted for 2-3 course, I had the pork cheek terrine served with small salad, bread and some pickles, it was nice but I wasn't blown away but it. I did also try some of the game pate and then had some major food envy, this was delicious. For my main course I had the Roast beef, the best bit for me, the meat was tender and really tasty, the Yorkshire pudding was pretty good as well. Now the veg was a bit under cooked for my liking, I completely understand some people like their veg with a bit of crunch but this was not for me. The gravy on the other hand was lovely and perhaps so lovely they didn't want to give it away, each meal had just a drizzle on and we had to ask for more, lots more! I think at one point we had 8 (very small) jugs on the table. For coffee dessert I opted for a mini dessert with coffee for £4.95, I had the chocolate truffles with an Espresso, it was the perfect end to the meal. The staff were really friendly and there was a nice atmosphere, I'll hopefully visit again and make sure we have plenty of time for an after dinner stroll.

As we were a bedraggled group we were quickly ushered to our pre booked table, where I began ogle the menu. I opted for the pate to start and a rare roast beef. We also decided to share a risotto, not sure why but it turned out to be a great idea ! The pate was delicious and with just the right amount of bread. And just when I thought this can't get any better, the beef arrived ! Pink and tasty just how I like it. As I pulled apart my beef slabs and nibbled on my parsnip I thought "this is the best gravy I've ever had ! " By then the rest of the party had demanded a further four boats of the stuff. We literally ended up drinking it, it was that good. I should also mention that the pork looked excellent. And that the Old Lodge say that they hand rear they're own piggies for slaughter field to fork style. The only thing that stops me from giving this a five is the price at eighty quid per couple this was no cheap Sunday outing.

Of noted is the new addition of tapas style nibbles and starters (pata bravas, chroizo slices, iberico ham and feta stuffed peppers). And I've been long overdue for a review of the local favourite. We came today celebrating both Mother's Day and a 45 sapphire anniversary. I shared a lovely charcuterie with the missus, which includes the above mentioned iberico ham, chorizo slices and feta stuff peppers (all of which can be ordered separately off the small pates menu). Surprisingly the "ample" selection was plenty to share for two, and I can only guess that the "generous" portion would be meant for parties of four. I also enjoyed a lovely lamb roast that came with sides of kale, parsnips and perfectly roasted potatoes. Others in our party had the roast beef and roast pork; both of which I was told were delicious! We also shared a triple chocolate dessert that had an amazingly sweet and tart passionfruit sorbet. All of this was enjoyed with a few pints of Amstel, bottles of champagne and fantastic service. I'm looking forward to the next family occasion to celebrate at the Gumstool.

The service was friendly and efficient, drinks were brought and food orders taken. Lovely hot bread and starters included calamari, devilled kidneys and moules mariniere. All were pronounced excellent and the mains were fish and chips, skate, rib eye steak and scallops. We couldn't manage deserts or coffee so we took a walk around the delightful grounds before heading for home. The bill for four was £123 including a bottle of Torrontes Altosur good value, we thought. It's on the list for a revisit.
