I only had time for a quick pint, but there were several people enjoying Sunday dinners, and I would like to have tried one myself. This place has the most dangerous entrance/exit I have ever seen on it. Once you're out the door and down the steps, you're pretty much standing in the road just beyond a blind curve. I don't know how the drunks avoid getting run over. Anyway, I'd recommend this place over the pubs that are closer to the abbey.

Initially we sat in the 'restaurant' end (posher tables and chairs), but soon half of the party had to move to the 'bar' end (benches and stools) as we had two dogs with us and they're not allowed in the restaurant area. That, plus a pint of Doom Bar, one of my favourite ales, set me up for the rest of the afternoon's expedition round the Forest of Dean. Trellech is a lovely village to visit - apparently it used to be larger than either Cardiff or Swansea in medieval times, although you wouldn't know it to look at. Check out the standing stones, the Tump, and the Virtuous Well, famous for curing eye problems and 'complaints peculiar to women'.

Thank God I had an epipen, Benedryl and tranquilizers to get through the pain. It's highly possible too that they hadn't made the pie and didn't bother to check the ingredients. They seemed to care very little and be irritated by my asking about allergens. Save yourself a hospital visit and eat somewhere that people care.

We chatted with another family and found that the dad literally grew up in our neighborhood back in the states! We were also lucky enough to watch the Welsh win the 2016 Eurocup quarter finals here. If you're a lover of proper ales, be prepared to leave this place with your car boot full of beer. Kingstone beer itself is strong on the taste, especially the beer named 1503 (named after the year its recipe is thought to have originated from) which is hoppy and rich and well worth trying out. You can get a 'brewery tour' here, for free, but don't expect too much from this in terms of scale- really it's just a chance to look through a window at the two rooms in the large shed where the beer's brewed. However if you know much about brewing beer (which personally I don't) then they'll be happy to talk to you at length about what they do. You also get a tasting, of course Besides beer, this is also a very good local produce shop, selling fresh breads and vegetables from the local farms as well as a small selection of packeted stuff and preserves. It's not especially cheap but you can tell that this is all quality stuff. Check the web site for opening times, as they seem to vary and be seasonal.
