The Wesley House - Oddly, my room was also the fire exit for all other rooms on the floor.

The Wesley House is no longer a pub or a restaurant. It remains a 15th century Merchant's House…read morewith lodging still happening upstairs from the former pub and restaurant. There was nothing exactly wrong with The Wesley House as a place of lodging but see if it's for you: * My bags were on the ground floor when I arrived. Nobody offered to bring them up the narrow stairway so I dragged them up myself. * The rooms are small but functional. Somewhat amusingly, the second floor emergency fire exit was in/through my room with the door to that exit ominously labeled "FINAL EXIT". Thankfully there was no need for anyone to run through my room on the night of my stay. * Though The Wesley House had someone on site when I arrived, that person gave me a key for the front entry door for later, when nobody is on-site. One lets themselves into and out of the building, walking through the former bar area to get up to the rooms. * There was nothing wrong with the breakfast that's included in the price of lodging but I will note that it was my least favorite breakfast of the 7 I had at other places during my time in the Cotswolds. The Wesley House is fine (no more, no less) but if you want something a little more than fine I'd keep searching.

Outstanding! Superb gourmet English food at day tripper prices…read more 15th century building that oozes history. Cozy bar area entrance that leads up & into a more spacious dining room, further back is a bright dining atrium. The servers are personable, friendly, genuine, knowledgeable and helpful. Their attention to detail is truly well done. The food is extraordinary. I'm here renting a house in Winchcombe for the week. Getting a good lay of the land. Spent the previous week in London. My dinner here tonight was more delicious and better presented than any meal that I had in the big city. My wife & I each had 4 courses, 4 glasses of wine plus one dessert wine. The total tariff was 71 quid. Simply amazing. In my home, 60 miles north of San Francisco, an equivalent meal would cost 2.5X more. I am a monarchist. I want England to take us Americans back into the kingdom. Failing that I want to plead for political amnesty and immigrate here. (Sssshhhhh, It's really not about the politics. I want to enjoy the superior food for the remainder of my life). If you are in the Cheltenham area and desire a memorable meal, this place will satisfy & delight you.

We enjoyed a delicious dinner in this old traditional pub. We called 3 hours before arrival to…read moreassure a table, which the proprietor appreciated. Step down and inside, the history of the building envelopes. It's ancient timbers and stone, roughhewn tables, dim lighting - very atmospheric. Friendly greeting by barman and proprietor, drink orders given immediately. My wife is a wine drinker. There are scant selections of wine by the glass. The Tempranillo she ordered was pretty mediocre. My pint of St. Austell's cask ale was sublime, really. One of the most delicious beers I've tasted since 1964. Smooth, luxurious mouth feel with lively flavors. The dinner menu had 5 choices. Bambie ordered the lemon sole fillets in a broth / butter sauce surrounded by a medley of fresh garden vegetables. I had the guinea fowl, the leg cooked confit and the breast cooked by roasting. The freshly puree potatoes were silky smooth without drowning in butter. The big side bowl of green peas, string beans, spinach tasted like they were plucked from the garden that morning. The sticky toffee pudding topped by a creamy vanilla ice cream was yeoman, I gobbled it though my dinner had me bursting to fullness. Total bill was 43 British pounds. By the time we exited at 9:30pm the place was full of happy patrons. All seem to be locals, I'm sure the wife & I were the only tourists. The bar does a brisk business. Ignore the year 2009 review, it no longer applies. I'm here in Winchcombe for 5 days and will report on others eateries. This one is pretty great.

The Plaisterers used to be really nice, especially in the summer - the decor inside is nice,…read morethere's a good selection of drinks and there is a good garden outside. However, the quality of the food has decreased significantly - the cheddar in their mature cheddar and tomato sandwich tastes a bit cash-and-carry, among other things - and the barlady is quite rude. Hopefully it'll return to how it used to be.
