We then started our tour and again we loved our tour guide. She was funny, not over the top and she knew her stuff. It was a very easy going tour. She got her points across easily and we got to try all the types of gin and rye. I really did like their gin, never realized there were so many tastes and flavors that could distinguish them, but i noticed it. Also, their juniper berries were good! We hope to find ourselves back in the area to try their new batches soon.

I opted out for the popular gin and tonic. During the tour we sampled their three gins: the traditional dry, the old tom, and a unique beach plum variety. Hands down this was the best and unexpected gin tour as well as tastings. Ended up buying their traditional dry and the beach plum variety which goes deep into getting the plums from Long Island. Just spent 3 hours at NJ Artisan Distillery and our group left with smiles on our faces, new…read moreacquaintances and a spicy taste in our mouths thanks to a special batch of liquor naturally named Hot Chocolate Sex (thanks uncle Jim!). The night started with a tasting of their super clean and smooth white rum followed by a smokey , more full bodied dark rum. Next we had a choice of a couple different liquors where I went with a "Suisse le bleu" absinthe drink. Made half and half with seltzer and a dab of ice, the liquor miraculously turned light blue. Strong smell of licorice off the top but the taste was surprisingly light and subtle for being 140 proof (less after being mixed obviously). The ladies had a coffee liquor which was the white rum mixed with soaked in Brazilian coffee beans. The entire time conversations were flowing between Brant(master distiller), Jim (NJ homebrew club advisor and drink architect), Doug (NJ homebrew flu. President and Brant's right hand man) and our group. Next we went on the distillery tour where Brant gave us his background and a bit of history. You can tell right off the bat that his passion comes from the heart and everything done at the distillery was carefully thought out from start to finish. After the tour, we were treated to more drinks and even a rum strawberry Gelato dessert... "hard ice". All I can say is wow! So tasty and just the right amount of kick. They need to put stuff on shelves in supermarkets! Also had one of their mojitos.... Very yummy. The crew then started talking about the different stuff they have distilled or architectured, which included peepski (melted peep for sugar base) and hot chocolate sex (rum, frap, Bosco, mead and hot peppers). Jim was nice enough to bring out his personal bottle of the hot chocolate sex which we got to try... Definitely interesting! They also brought out some local nj hot sauce to try with the chips. All in all a fantastic night!

I want to specifically highlight Phillip, who consistently goes above and beyond in creating a welcoming and positive experience. He is professional, kind, knowledgeable, and genuinely charismatic. He makes customers feel comfortable, takes the time to answer questions, and represents what a neighborhood wine shop should be. Interactions with him are always pleasant and positive. Unfortunately, my experiences with Stefon have been consistently negative. This is not an isolated incident, he is routinely rude and dismissive. While Stefon is knowledgeable about wine, customer service is also a fundamental part of the job, and product knowledge alone does not excuse disrespectful behavior. Most recently, during an incoming snowstorm, I called to ask whether store hours would be affected, as many local businesses were adjusting their schedules. Instead of receiving a straightforward response, I was spoken to disrespectfully both over the phone and in person and was told that if I had "gone on Google," I would have known the store hours. That response was unnecessary and unprofessional given the circumstances. Pier Wines is located in a residential neighborhood with many local customers who frequent the store, and customer service truly matters. Employees like Phillip, who consistently provide a welcoming, professional, and knowledgeable experience, are the reason customers want to return, while repeated negative interactions with Stefon have had the opposite effect.

The person working seemed particular annoyed we walked in and now he has to put on his mask while we were in there. I wasn't dressed nicely or anything, I was on my way to a picnic at central park, so there could be some bias on how much I was willing to spend. After looking through the entire store for 5 minutes, we were never asked if we need help or anything. I mean, you would assume every person who walks in would need help, why? Because there's absolutely no organization or labeling, so trying to find particular wines would take all day. I finally asked if they have any Cab Sav, and I was replied with "of course we do. Over here. We have some $20 bottles over here, and some $15 bottles down there." Well, that definitely answers my first assumption about why we weren't being helped. We're not big spenders! You want me to buy these cheap bottles, then I will! Next I asked about Riesling, and then he showed me that. My friend and I both noticed how this guy was completely miserable and unhelpful. Seriously, you don't want to sell anything or make money at all? So be it. This review will make sure of that. I ended up buying 5 bottles of wine.
