The Socialists at Half Price Books no longer provide plastic bags for the 900% mark up on used books they sell. I guess they think they can somehow "save" the environment. 40 years ago you were demonized if you selected paper over plastic since the trees needed to be "saved". You would have to use one of their Chinese made bags 5,403 times in your lifetime to offset the carbon emissions from the transport. It actually makes it worse in the environment instead of using locally sourced plastic bags. Most businesses make a rational decision when they decide to expand to other states as to stay within a reasonable distance from their distribution chain but not half price books. The late founder was a Marxist so the company decided to only open new stores in Socialists states like Washington, California and other states like Minnesota. They never dreamed that 4 stores in Minnesota would somehow unionize along with another in Indiana...We can all comfortably agree that HPB will not open another store in those two states. The founder was probably spinning in his grave when that happened....good for other businesses but not ours would be their philosophy. Funny how leftist businesses always spout the virtues of socialism except when it comes to unionization. read more

This is a small Half Price Books location and I like that it's small and comfortable. I gave it 3 stars because I almost couldn't find any books to buy. I usually walk around and just explore; end up buying 3-4 books. At this location, I was having a hard time finding a book. As I was walking out the store, empty handed, I found this book called "Hood Feminism" and It caught my interest immediately! Overall, the staff were friendly and helpful. The staff is friendly and polite. The store is clean and there are various selections to choose from. They have lots of new and used books. They also carry stationary, puzzles, DVD's, albums, comic's, and gaming items such as Nintendo. I have yet to find a bad half price book store. Each location is different and has something special to offer. They don't give a veterans discount and that's ok. I go to a lot of half price books, I look for 3 things: VHS tapes, video game stuff and occult books. Leaving this review based on their section of those items. VHS- unfortunately one of the worst vhs spots out of all the HPB in dfw. Very small selection. the tapes are all individually priced which I normally don't like, but to be fair they are often priced pretty cheap so not a huge complaint but I do wish they would follow the example of other locations and make them all a set price unless it's something particularly rare. Video Games- good, big supply, pricing at HPB on video games is almost always wack, but I have found a few affordable gems here. Their glass display is always full. Also constantly new items. Occult- The BEST occult section in Dallas out of all HPB, they have a glass display in the 'occult' section that is nearly always full. I have cleared it out a couple times, some of my very best rare occult book finds have been here. (Prices are often too high but... that's just HPB)m The staffing here is great, always super nice, and often very knowledgeable. It's nice to shop somewhere where it seems the staff enjoys working there. A great location overall read more

I've only had two experiences at this store. The first day, overall a good experience the guy(tall & long hair) who helped me was extremely helpful and nice, I asked for used books, they had them, he showed me where they were. I purchased that and a cute tote. The second day terrible, I went in with a bag full of books to sell and the guy(short & had glasses) who helped me out was NOT nice. He explained to me the process of them buying and how he'll call me on the intercom when he's done scanning the books, he explained this to me as if he was talking to a child. I brushed it off cause idk maybe he was having a bad day. I had a couple questions after he was done explaining, the way he looked at me as if I were stupid and answered my questions was not nice. I couldn't even get the question out because I was so surprised at the way he was treating me. One of his answers was "If you don't agree with our offer then you can go donate them somewhere like a library." In the most rudest way possible and also saying it like he was talking to a child. I was with a friend and the only thing we did was eye each other because of this guys behavior. Overall I will most likely not be going back to this location because of the rude employee & because it's a super small location. I rather drive the extra minutes to a bigger location with nice staff. read more

Points for selection, but as far as prices 9 times out of 10 Amazon is the better deal. Why buy a used book here if I can get a brand new copy on Amazon at an equal or even lower price? As the name would suggest, books are definitely NOT half-priced. I bought a copy of A Wrinkle in Time this past weekend and paid 5.59. The original price was 6.99. Amazon has it for 4.99. Lesson learned. I've noticed this is the case on most of their books. They pay pennies for used books, but turn around and then sell them for top dollar. This is the smallest Half Price Books I've been in so far. That being said, I have incredible luck at this location. I have only visited the Irving HPB for the children's section. We have found great books about tornados, Irish folk tales, and Halloween. The children's section is all the way in the back, and while it doesn't have chairs and a play house like the OG on NWH, it is out of the way, so you and the minis can plop down and thumb through stories without disrupting the childless patrons. I have never sold at this location, so I couldn't comment on that. What I can comment towards is the ease and affordability of taking your offspring here. It's aces. read more

Used to be great. Now it's meh to pretty disappointing. Their prices have gone up and now it's difficult to find great deals. Rare or even not so rare stuff is pretty overpriced, if they have any. Years ago you could bring your stuff to HPB and leave satisfied. These days, they'll make extremely lowball offers for your old books and records. It's much better to sell them on Amazon or Ebay. If you don't mind the drive, Recycled Books in Denton is awesome and feels much like what HPB used to be. read more

I've been attending Half Price Books for many moons, but they are not what they used to be. As other reviewers have mentioned, the prices are basically the market rate on Amazon plus 25 percent, sometimes more. This isn't quite logical as many times Amazon will have the same book in new condition for less. That being said they do have 50% off coupons from time to time, and coupled with those you can still get some relatively good deals. My biggest qualm is that rare or unusual books and games are obscenely over priced. The issue is that when books come in organically, e.g. when somebody takes items to the buy counter, each one is scanned into a system that takes (some of this is speculation) the average high price for the ISBN/UPC and then marks it up accordingly. This is problematic because when certain items are infrequently sold on Amazon, the listing price will rise (despite the market value not changing). This is noticeable with virtually all items that become discontinued or are in short supply, regardless of if demand is simultaneously weak. The staff on the other hand are habitually helpful, and usually well read. This particular location is oddly shaped for a bookstore as it's outlandishly narrow but deep. The trappings here are not quite as good as say the Watauga or Bedford locations. Half Price Books also sells their inventory through Amazon out of the local stores. Which again makes the more esoteric items less attainable as shoppers from the entirety of the United States can purchase them. This also causes a bit of a paradox, as with 3rd party sellers on Amazon you're covered by the A-Z guarantee, which has much more liberal return provisions than Half Price Books themselves. Ceteris paribus, this means purchasing a book through Half Price Books via Amazon is actually more advantageous than buying it at one of their brick and mortar locations. read more

This place is great! When you walk in there is a table that has puzzles and coins in it, and it goes back quite a ways, with many organized and clearly labelled sections. They have some sues books mixed in with the new. It's very clean, bright, and inviting. Definitely a bibliophiles dream read more

Good romance section, but smaller compared to others in the area. I will say though, this is a rather small location and comparatively, the romance section was one of the larger ones. Found a few I've been looking for for a while and even some ones with unique covers! I recommend checking this one out if you're a romance reader. read more

I went in to purchase a book that I saw online. When I asked the person shelving books about the price of the book he said they could match the online price. When I went to check out the guy did not match the online price saying that the prices are different because online they charge for shipping. Furthermore apparently the lady also there was new and when I asked her what the price online was for paperback and hardback she said she didn't know how to locate it. Did you not screen your candidates for reading skills? Alls she had to do was review the book on the website page that the guy had already pulled up. Seems to me that's a required skill. read more

New book collectors beware! This is truly a bad place to sell your signed and first edition books!! Most experienced book collectors probably already know this about Half Price Books (HPB), but I went here to see for myself. I brought four signed first edition books to this store to see what they would offer, three of which have sold on ebay for over $40, and one of which sells on abebooks for $75 (and is still sealed in the original packaging). The HPB book buyer (with manager approval) only offered a total of $10 for all four books!! I asked what their reasoning was for the low offer, and they responded as follows: "They are used books." HA! Seriously? Even the brand new signed first edition still shrinkwrapped in its original packaging (never removed, opened, or read) is considered a used book? It's just ridiculous. They claim to be so knowledgeable on collectible books, and they claim that their "book experts" will make a fair offer to you based on supply and demand. However, I have seen firsthand now that what they basically do is just offer you no more than 20% of the book's list price, no matter which book or what the real market value is. Honestly, I could have walked in there with signed first edition Harry Potter books and they still probably would have offered me $10. By the way, I did bring first editions of the first three Harry Potter books to a different HPB location, and they would only offer me a total of $15 because they said "these books just aren't in demand right now." I have only been there one other time and thought, maybe, might be a good place. I wasn't that impressed. So, today I through I would try it again. I have a couple of subjects and wanted to see what they might have. I wasn't fifteen feet in the door and was asked if I had a mask. I kindly said I did not have one. I then asked if they had one in which they did not. I was told I could not shop there unless I had a mask on. I then ask if I was being told to leave. He said I could go next door and buy one and come back. I told him if you are going to mandate you need to furnish the masks. Shame on you Half Price Books in treating your potential customers that way! They will be playing hockey in hell before I would give them another chance. I would have walked out with several books in hand. There are plenty of other options available to get used books. To start with, there is a site called Amazon. Goodness, I could spend countless happy hours in this store! This particular store is quite deceiving from the outside because I thought it would be smaller. They have made the layout of the store beneficial for everyone since they are still able to house hundreds of books, CDs and DVDs. I am, let's say, a frugal person. A cheapie, I suppose. So, HPB is a dream store for me. Great prices on everything they carry. And the clearance section... gees, I should just carry in a lawn chair and have a seat in this section! I have found so many unbelievable bargains in this section of the store! My hubby is really into Sudoku. They have a nice section of these, as well as other puzzle books. Much cheaper here than any where else. I usually buy several for him. If you are looking for books or movies, this is your place! I love HPB and this location lives up to what I've come to expect from the brand- inexpensive, one of a kinds- old favorites and a healthy dose of current best sellers. Pretty decent selection of vinyl music as well. Staff is friendly and helpful when needed but also leaves you alone to rummage around a bit which I appreciate. Space is limited bc of the location but they do pack a lot into the store- you won't be disappointed. The children's section is very good- large and nicely organized. My favorite spot is the collectible section- lots of unexpected treasures. The only way to improve this location is to add a coffee shop:) read more

Half Price Books, like Texas, is HUGE. The selection is overwhelming. Used bookstores are fun places, and this one is no exception. In a sense, there's too-muchness. You have so many choices you can't make a choice, leaving empty-handed. I was underwhelmed with the religion/philosophy section, but in other areas, they're great. It's primarily a student destination, especially since textbooks are so expensive that buying used is the only way to go. It's large, like Portland's legendary Powell's City of Books, but without the Pacific Northwest charm. read more

In the process of relocating and decided not to take a ton of books that I had. I came across this place online and decided to take some of the books that I had. I visited the branch is Las Colinas, TX. I had a bag with about 10-15 books. A mix of hard cover novels and school type books. This was my first time, so I didn't know what to expect. The person I ended up speaking to ran through the policy so fast I missed what he said. I was told I could walk around until he looked through everything and he would page me. Less than 5 minutes later, I heard by name and went back to him. I was told my "offer" was $2. I was speechless. The books were in almost new condition. I couldn't think fast enough and the only thing I could bring myself to say was "ok". That $2 wasn't enough to put back the gas I burned driving to the store and back home. A complete waste of time and a total rip off. I'll be taking the rest of my books to Goodwill. I wouldn't recommend if you're looking to sell books. I wasn't expecting to get rich by selling the books I had, but I wasn't expecting to be told $2 either. You live and you learn I guess. read more
