Discovering new bookstores during my travels has become a new passion of mine, so when I checked for indie bookstores in the DFW area, Talking Animals Books was one of the first to pop up. From the few photos and the name, I thought it would be more of a children's bookstore but I was so wrong. As soon as you enter, the amazing staff welcomes you and is eager to help you find any books you are looking for. Right at the entrance they had the fantasy and romance section which is a personal favorite, and I immediately found a couple of books that have been on my list. I absolutely LOVED that they had self published books from indie authors, which is so rare to find at any local bookstore (you usually have to wait for them to be re-published by a publisher to find them anywhere besides Amazon). They also have a children's section which is super cute, and I found a couple of things for my little one. On the top floor they have a couple of couches for you to hang out and a section of used books. Frankly, this was one of the best bookstores I found in the DFW area, and I can't wait to come back and support them! read more

This place is a total hidden gem and just feels good to walk into and around. It's cozy, quirky, and packed with uniquely curated books!! I found a couple books I'd been meaning to grab, as well as a gift for one of my friend's birthday. The owner (or whoever was working) was super sweet and happy to give recs! What a cute and beautiful book store! They sell books for adults and kids located right off of main street in Grapevine. Its easy to miss so be on the lookout! The staff were great and if you just want to go there to relax and read a book, the upstairs of the bookstore has comfy seats, perfect for relaxation. Talking Animals Books is a charming indie bookstore just off of Main Street on Worth in Grapevine. It's clean and organized and has a nice vibe to it. The gentleman working there when I was there was welcoming and offered assistance as he greeted me. That was refreshing and probably the best service I received at any of the stores I visited in the historic downtown Grapevine area. My wife, a children's author, had told me about the store and about how neat it was and suggested I check them out sometime. I could see instantly the appeal, as it is the kind of bookstore one might see in a Hallmark movie. In fact, they were even recognized by and featured in USA Today's weekly spotlight on Independent Bookstores this past February. Not bad for a store that is only 2 years old! Being small, their selection in somewhat small too, but I will say, they make the most of their space, as it is well utilized. Maybe my wife being a children's author, or maybe because I myself am a kid that never grew up, my personal favorite section of the store was the children's reading nook, which is fashioned with a bank teller window in it, connecting the present to a past when the building used to be a bank in 1900. Legend has it that when it was a bank it was robbed by some of Bonnie & Clyde's "gang", but I cannot verify that. There are a lot of such claims in this area. Seriously, if I had a dollar for every building or bank in Texas that claims to have ties to Bonnie & Clyde, I would be a rich man. I also enjoyed the used book section which is housed in the upstairs part of the store, where there is also a Keurig machine (offering free coffee) and a lovely reading area. And great children's graphic novel selection my son loves and just good selection for all ages. But my son gets excited about coming here and loves the reading nook/old ticket counter. This is the coziest little bookstore around. It feels like how you want a bookstore to feel: like a bookstore out of a storybook... haha! This part of historic downtown Grapevine on Main Street is already super cute, but Talking Animal Books definitely adds to the whimsy and charm. It's fun to spend a day out here browsing all the boutiques, gift shops, restaurants and bars, and the farmers market. But one spot I'm always going to pop into is Talking Animal Books. This shop is woman-owned and typically staffed by young adults/students. Everyone is always so kind and helpful. While the bookstore is small, they really do have a great comprehensive selection. They often bring in authors and illustrators and they always have the latest trending books. Upstairs there are couches and coffee and kids toys! There is plenty of parking closeby and the shop is available to rent out for events and such -- I've hosted a couple book clubs here and both were so fun; the perfect atmosphere and the perfect location for finding food, drink, and shopping before or after! read more

Our book club met here and we voted and chose The Violin Conspiracy by Brendan Slocumb for our first book. The Talking Animal bookstore is located in Grapevine, and is an adorable local indie-style shop. Inside they have a hidden cubbie that is a bank teller window, like from the Grapevine Home Bank. In 1932, the Grapevine Home Bank was robbed by J. Les "Red" Stewart and Odell Chambless, colleagues of Bonnie and Clyde. The shop is welcoming, very inviting. I called Talking Animals beforehand to see if they had copies of Alice in Wonderland and thankfully had a couple of copies to choose from. This charming local bookshop is located in historic downtown grapevine. The staff at Talking Animals are friendly and knowledgeable about the books/merchandise available. They also host different events, including a book club which is cool. They have two levels, the downstairs has books, apparel, jewelry and trinkets for sale and upstairs they have used and discounted books for sale. They have a charming bathroom as well which has a changing station for moms. I was delighted to see they had a Nancy drew book upstairs which I purchased along with the Alice in wonderland book. The prices are reasonable and the variety of books is impressive. I look forward to returning. read more

I really wanted to fall in love with this little bookstore. As a local business owner and lifelong book lover, there's nothing better than discovering a hidden gem full of new stories and fresh perspectives. Sadly, this visit turned out to be one I'd rather close the cover on and shelve forever. While quietly chatting with another non-employee about our work--nothing loud or inappropriate--an employee (owner?) unexpectedly inserted themselves into our private conversation. Not just with a passing comment, but with an unsolicited and condescending jab to the entire store about how my job and even the way I spoke about my work was "wrong." It wasn't just off-putting--it was deeply uncomfortable. We were both stunned. Bookstores are supposed to be places where ideas are shared and minds are opened, not places where curiosity and conversation are dog-eared by arrogance. Sadly, the staff's behavior (and the sense that this was likely endorsed or mirrored by ownership--by the end two ladies where asking questions and the other kept putting us down--possibly both the owners?) made it clear that open-mindedness wasn't part of the atmosphere here. Instead of feeling welcomed, I left feeling unwelcome, embarrassed (for them), and disappointed. This was my first visit--and despite wanting to support a small, local shop--I won't be returning. I simply can't recommend a space that treats patrons this way. I hope this bookstore can one day rewrite the script on how they engage with customers, because right now, this story ends badly. read more

Any time I visit any place at any city's downtown, I kinda freak out a little about what the parking situation will be like. For Talking Animals Books that was not an issue. They have plenty of free public parking located walking distance from the shop. Once inside, I headed upstairs for a mom's group book club. It was definitely cozy, but it had a baby gate and plenty of toys to keep the kiddos distracted. It was GREAT! Oh! & free coffee..yum! Afterwards, it was cool to see all the book selections they offered. & if they don't have what you are looking for don't hesitate to ask, as staff is happy to order it for you. They also had different gifts, bookmarks, and accessories. This place is just cute and cozy and perfect for book lovers. I highly recommend this place and will definitely be back, as it is so worth the drive! read more

I love this place so much- after moving back to DFW, I was in search of an independent bookstore, and this has become my staple place to buy all of my books. The people who run/work at the store are so kind and immediately jump to help you find what you need once you enter the store. If they don't have it, they will happily order it for you at no charge until you pick it up. It's a cozy environment with lots of selections and even a used book section on the second floor. If you know anything about me, you know I love a bookstore! If I could I would live in one and rarely leave. This is a cute book store in Grapevine, in the heart of the Main Street shopping area. A great addition to go check out before or after a meal, possibly before you go get a sweet treat! (That is if you don't spend all of your cash getting books!) They have a nice gathering area for book clubs, a really sweet sitting area upstairs, with some games kiddos could play while you are having your book club. They have some established ones, I think I saw one for adults and one for High Schoolers, but you can set up a time for your own group to have one as well. If need be you can also hold one downstairs in the shop if you coordinate with them ahead of time. I can't wait to come back to see what new treasures/adventures I can find next! read more

Taking Animal books is an awesome independent book store off of Main Street Grapevine. They are very welcoming for book clubs, they have a nice second floor you can use to meet, as well as having some board games to play up there too. For the book selection they have a pretty nice selection, a little bit of everything, with a section for used books. Plus they have some awesome stickers and a few other items. Prices are listed price, but I didn't look at the prices on the used books during our visit. I look forward to coming back during a time we're visiting the shops and restaurants on main. read more

Emmalie welcomed us immediately and gave us many recommendations of a variety of books and asked questions to find out what we liked. The wooden fixtures around the store were very unique and fun to sift through titles on. Prices were reasonable and used book section is a fun hunt. What a cute local bookstore! I appreciate the wide variety of offering besides books and the amazing space they've made here. It's so nice to be able to purchase books locally than contribute to corporate overlords. They have a cute little "bank" reading nook for kids, a help-yourself coffee bar, and an upstairs kids play area that also doubles as a place to meet up for a book club. I have only met one of the owners (Katie) so far, and we had a great chat and she is so kind, and gave me a couple of stickers and a tote bag with their logo on it with my purchase - it's very cute (and in my favorite color, dark green) and I am happy to use it around DFW to be a walking billboard for their business! read more

This indie bookstore has been open for a few months and I finally made it to Main Street to check it out. It does not disappoint. It is pretty small for a bookstore but the space is maximized and the inventory is expertly curated. The owners are so kind, staff is friendly and helpful, they always give good recommendations and love to take recommendations too on authors they should look into ordering for the store! I love the selection they have for an indie bookstore too! I try to shop small with everything I do, and every time I go into their store (which sometimes is once a week because it's my favorite) I lose track of time and want to buy everything!!! Everything is at a great price for an independent bookstore and I love knowing that my money is helping people and not just going to big corporation people. VERY cute, eclectic, and comfy book store! I just popped in today, and got a kick out of it. I didn't go upstairs yet, I'll do that next visit. There's a "banned" book shelf which cracks me up. Actual banned books would not be for sale, and you can find those books just about anywhere. Some may be removed from younger eyes in schools. That's ok. There's a bit of "wokeness" in the air. This bookstore opened about two weeks ago, and I'm only now finding out about it. Anyway, since it's right on the way as I walk from the train station to the cigar shop, I figured it was worth the visit. Not sure what the pricing scheme is for the books, but I did find quite a few that fit the genre of books I would ordinarily read. A lady I spoke with turned out to be one of the owners. We found this little gem in the heart of historic Grapevine, Texas. Honestly, I really needed to find this store, and we did at just the right moment. The young person behind the counter was funny and kind and very knowledgeable about literature. They helped us find a couple of books, then we sat and enjoyed the air conditioning and chatted about books as a family. We ended up buying their sweatshirts, some t-shirts, and bookmarks along with the haul of books. 10 for 10, would do it again. Though we live three hours away we will be buying from them again.
