I love books and Half-Price Books feeds that love without costing me an arm and a leg. They are always pretty busy in the store but it seems they always have enough help to get everyone checked out quickly. I do not read a lot of fiction anymore due to a lack of time but I do buy art books, how-to books, and magazines. I love when I can find a $17 magazine for a couple bucks or so. They also carry albums and cds. I also usually purchase a calendar in here for the new year. I will continue to shop here. read more

I think this is a great store, they have a great collection of books games dvds ect, the prices are also very reasonable! You can also sell books to them as well, which I love to do after I read them, to clear space. I picked up 2 maps, and the third book in the Sarah Maas series! Friendly staff, but the last 5 times I've been there I did not find anything, the selection and value is much worse than it was a decade ago. My wife put two used cookbooks back because they were more expensive than new on Amazon. I don't even care that they only offered me less than $2 for the 25 dvds I brought in, I expected that. Biggest issue with HPB these days has got to be the prices, you rarely feel like you get a bargain there anymore. In 2010 we'd leave that place with stacks of books and it was such a fun place to visit. read more

I recently discovered Half Price Books. I really like walking around the store because of the variety, it's just so fun. As far as pricing, I always compare to Amazon. I feel like it's usually pretty comparable. But sometimes you can find better deals elsewhere. I tried selling to them for the first time and was a little disappointed with how much I was offered for what I brought in. They said it was all based on trends and what they could resell etc. which I totally understand. But I know I could've gotten more selling them on Amazon if I had wanted to put in the effort. Overall, a great experience, just know that you likely won't get much for books you bring in! read more

There's a huge clearance section all along one wall that I didn't even notice the first time I came; the second visit I found multiple books for $2 or $3 that they also had on the shelves in their respective sections where they were marked much higher. I found the prices for both fiction and nonfiction to be, for the most part, prohibitively expensive. Many were not 'half-price' off the cover price at all. (That's why finding the clearance wall was such a nice surprise!) The fiction is arranged somewhat strangely; there are two separate sections of alphabetized fiction; at first I thought it was one section for paperbacks, the other for hardcover, but that wasn't so; then I thought one for classics and one for more recently published books, but no. So if you don't find what you're looking for, be sure to check the OTHER fiction section an aisle or two away; or for nonfiction, check the clearance wall. It was strange they didn't have a single copy of certain popular books, like Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov. Hm. They also have cds, LPs, tapes, antique books, stationery, magazines, puzzles, etc just like other HPBs, and you can sell your books; though from listening to the disappointed folks getting their quotes, it sounds like they don't pay very much. read more

Don't sleep on Half Price Books! I was able to find some really obscure / vintage books my nephew asked for this Christmas, and the prices were so much lower than anywhere else online. Even better, they had them in my local store, so I was able to order online and then pick them up at the counter. The employees were very friendly despite a pretty big pre-Christmas crowd, and they had a fantastic selection of cute tote bags (99 cents!) and other fun stocking stuffer-type gifts near the checkout. I was also able to unexpectedly knock Pokemon cards off my list (100 cards for $10), saving me an extra shopping stop. I'll definitely look to them the next time I have a gifting occasion! read more

This place was pretty cool. I'm visiting from Michigan this weekend and I don't think we have them there - their website said the closest one is Ohio. We mostly stopped by to use the bathroom and check out their games selection. I ended up buying a discontinued Uno game that I haven't seen before and my boyfriend got a vintage Monopoly game. There are flyers in the store to sign up for their texts and emails and I did that to get 10% off, which was nice. Next time I'll stop by and check out the books too! read more

Remember when you were younger, and all of the time you had ahead of you was yours, and you would go to bookstores and CD shops and just walk around and browse for hours? Half Price Books is like that place of your youth, except everything is discounted, and the books and the CDs (and DVDs, and games, and other things) are all together in one store. This particular Half Price Books is neatly organized, and it's easy to find what you're looking for. They even have an entire section just for kids toys and kids games. The prices for these things are really good, so I'm going to have to remember to visit when I'm looking for a birthday gift for a kid. They also have a moderate section with graphic novels, most of which look new or almost new. Because we are in the midst of a pandemic, I should mention that masks are required when you're inside the store. They also have signs on each aisle that suggest that only one person stand in the aisle at a time. read more

Half Price Books is a wonderful second hand book store that has all kinds of books, CD'S, records, and DVD'S. I came here to find a book that I needed, and unfortunately, they did not have the book I wanted, but I was able to find other books and a record for my friend. This is a really neat store, and the staff is helpful and willing to lend a hand to help you find the book you are looking for. They even buy books, CD'S, and DVD'S off of you that you want to get rid of for their store, but don't expect to get a good amount back on your merchandise. You can find pretty much all the latest best sellers and old books that you want at Half price books. It is a great bookstore to browse in at your leisure. read more

I really like this HPB! It's always very organized and clean. The hours are nice because I can go in before or after work! 9 times out of 10, if I'm going in for a specific book, they have it! If not, I can always order it at the check out and have it shipped to the store. They have a great mix of older gems and new/ recent releases. My only complaint is how little they pay for books that get brought in. I brought in about 10 hardcover books, all released in the last year or so (some in the last few months) and they offered me $13 for all!! It was honestly kind of insulting. I know how much they charge for these books and surely they can afford to pay more than $1 per book!! I declined because I felt better to donating them to little free libraries! I recently went through my books and needed a place to sell the ones that needed a new home. Half Priced Books was relatively easy and quick with giving a quote for how much they offered for the books that I had. While the books were being processed, I was able to browse the selection. This half priced books had a bigger selection than other half priced books I have been in. It had a diverse collection in many genres. They also have a lot of book related goodies, movies, and music. They really should vet the people who work there; I brought in a collection of vinyl at one time and didn't realize right away that several had been stolen. They weren't in the stack of "offers" and they weren't in my returns. Wasn't able to do anything about it as a couple weeks had passed before I realized it. The books are overpriced and selling books and media to them nets you very litte. And yet....if you know how to shop for deals, it's still worth browsing there. Start at the clearance wall then go from there. They used to have a much larger children's section and children's clearance so the shrinking of that area has been very disappointing. But there is always Goodwill for well-priced children's books. read more

So hey, apparently there's these stores that sell... books? I thought every book was grown in Amazon warehouses but boy was I wrong. See books are now sold in stores too. Half Price Books sells them for... half price or even less! Oh, but they also sell CDs, and DVDs, and vinyl, and consul games -- all for very cheap. Where have I been that I didn't know these places existed?! And one final thing: for the Christmas season they had a Christmas section up front with books and DVDs... and... in this Christmas movie section... they had... the 1988 Christmas classic... Half Price Books has been horrible for years now with regards to buying AND selling. Today was the peak when I saw a BOOTLEG BLU RAY SET being passed off as legitimate for 4 times the price as they go for online. $200 for a bootleg, with no legitimate version. It's a bootleg collection, if the person putting prices out here actually did their research maybe they wouldn't have this issue. This was the final straw, I will not be returning. read more

Half Price Books is one of those places that just sort of feels like a local bookstore even though it's not, in fact, even close to a local bookstore. In fact, Half Price books is the largest family owned chain of new-and-used bookstores in the U.S. It was started in 1972 and continues to be led by the same family with headquarters in Dallas, Texas and has 127 retail spots nationwide including at least 3-4 here in Indy. This particular location, if you've been around Indy for a while, used to be behind Castleton Square in the same large strip center that houses Dave & Buster's. It was a weird location, uniquely designed but I rather loved it. I must admit that I've never quite adjusted myself to this new location and I should also confess that I don't go to Half Price Books nearly as often as I used to. This location is now located directly on East 82nd Street. The smaller strip center is more directly away from the street, yet far more easily accessible and visible than the previous location. Parking is definitely more limited, though it seems to mostly work out. This location also has two entrances, one will take you directly into the bones of the store and directly next to the cash registers. The other location to the west would be right where you sell your used books and other media items. There's two accessible parking spots on the west end - they're a tad cramped. My sense is they technically meet ADA requirements, but aren't truly accessible. That said, nearly always at least one of them is open and there's a nice curb cut right there. Both entrances have double glass/wood doors that are a little heavy with a bigger than expected lip at the door. If you're in a wheelchair, it's what I call a two-handed entryway - you can probably make it, but you should probably keep your hands on the chair. I will note, however, that the staff is nearly always uniformly friendly and if they see you struggling they're quite likely to help. Half-Price Books is essentially a mishmash of books. While they separate by genres and staff members are always willing to help, generally speaking it's the kind of place where you'll think they don't have a book only to end up finding it in a different location. I've tended to notice that most staff members are friendly/helpful, though it shouldn't be surprising that most are fairly introverted. You won't get the approach here that you get at a Barnes & Noble. You simply won't (and I say that as a former B&N employee who loved the company). As a wheelchair user, my biggest frustration here is that the bookshelves are unquestionably high. It's the kind of place where independence is truly difficult, because inevitably the book you want is on a higher shelf. While employees are patient and helpful, the goal is always independence and that's difficult here. As most reviews have noted, they do buy used books, CD's, DVD's, Blu-rays, vinyl, etc. You go up to the counter (they have carts available if you need them for loading books), give your name/ID/phone number, and essentially browse the store while they review your trade-ins. You either cash-in the receipt they give you or you can use that amount as a credit for store items. If you're hoping to turn a profit, that's about 105% unlikely as HPB purchasing is notoriously on the low-end. I can't say, in all honesty, I would ever take a collectible here if I knew it was a collectible. They have a collectible section, but having experienced their pricing multiple times I simply don't trust that area of buy-back. They do carry some new items and they often feature current bestsellers and featured titles. They also carry a wide range of other media including vinyl, DVD's, Blu-rays, novelty items, etc. Overall, I appreciate Half Price Books. It's a great option, also with a great clearance section, and as a company they are very philanthropic and involved in social causes around literacy and freedom of expression. They have their own publishing arm, Hackberry Press, and despite having some reservations about certain areas and practices it remains one of my true go-to places when I need a title and I need it fast. read more

As a New Years/Half Birthday gift to myself, I went shopping at this Half Price Book location. I instantly went crazy as my sister tried to keep up with my pace running all over the store, grabbing title after title. I ended up buying a planner and journal, but compiled a list of books I'm definitely coming back for. A few reasons why I love half priced books: 1.) That vintagy library feel 2.) They will buy back your used reads 3.) They have something for EVERY PRICE POINT, as well as tapes/records/comics/etc 4.) I bought a stack of Zappa cds. I trusted they were all accounted for. One double cd was empty. Came back the next day and the guy said he couldn't locate it. I got the feeling he thought I was scamming them even though he just checked me out the day before. I think this is going to be it for awhile (I know I've said it before about this business). It's actually easier to buy online, but I like to support brick and mortar stores. Half Price Books is really close to my house, but I doubt I'll be spending my money there anymore. read more

We come to this half price books whenever we've got books or board games to sell. The staff are also always helpful in finding books we need. Once when I was looking for a particular textbook I needed for class, they didn't have it but they were able to find one at another location. They got it shipped to their store for me since it was a bit far to drive. It cost me a small shipping fee ontop of the book's cost and still ended up cheaper than if I'd purchased it through my college. read more

I love half-price books! Mostly because it feels like an independent bookstore, the staff are friendly, the selection is amazing, and its cheap(er). I also love to sell books here, and have consistently had a great experience doing so. I never expect to leave with a huge wad of cash, but I do appreciate being able to use whatever is earned through a sell to put towards whatever I'm inevitably purchasing. Here are some fun facts about Half Price books for folks who may not be regulars: -Sign up (via text) for their email or text list and get a 50% off coupon within minutes. -There's free WiFi. -The bathrooms are clean. -The stationary section is packed with never-been-used journals, notecards, calendars, coloring books, etc. -There's coffee. Here, I usually don't have to worry about breaking the bank (unless I go crazy) and can still find 99% of what I'm looking for. I scheduled an appointment to potentially sell my collection of about 600 cd's about a week in advance. I had never attempted to sell my cd's and in fact had never stepped inside a Half Price Books. I was asked to show up on time as they book appointments back to back and was told even with my large quantity of cds it would only take 15-30 minutes. I questioned that amount of time with such a large quantity and the gentleman said they are pretty fast and have their system down. They ask you to wait inside the store and they would call my name on the intercom when they were done. When about 45 minutes passed I asked if it was ok if we sat outside since they was no where to sit inside. While I was inside I took a brief look at the cds and I didn't see any prices lower than $3.99. When we were finally notified that they were done (in excess of an hour) I was offered $60! The pile on the counter was huge - I asked about how many they had and the guy responded about 300. My quick and incorrect math (I was in shock) calculated 50 cents a piece. I said that's like 50 cents each??? The guy said yeah not bothering to correct me with the right amount of 20 cents per cd. Many of my cds were new in packages. When I questioned it; he stammered well some had scratches - don't think so!!! Most of my cds had rarely been played if at all. I was so stunned, angry for waiting MUCH longer than promised and it would have taken probably at least 15 more minutes to get them back in the boxes. I was actually so mad I just wanted to get out of there. I was with my stepdaughter and had promised to get her something for going with me & helping me and it was a small used book for $7.99. I found their prices OVER priced on books and novelty items. How much profit does a store need to make at the detriment of the person supplying their goods? At 20 cents a cd they paid me - then selling for $3.99 and up??? That's outrageous, that's taking advantage of people. I'm not even sure what cds they took as they didn't give me a list and I've been too upset to look over the ones they didn't want to buy. I wanted to sell my cds to clear space in my home as I don't play cds anymore. I was optimistic that Half Priced Books would be fair in their buy price - even at $1.00 each they stand to make a huge profit percentage. But instead they gave me 20 cents each - most likely even less since I didn't bring nearly as many home. I recommend selling your cds on FB Marketplace, eBay, garage sale - anywhere but Half Priced Books! read more

Nothing feels better than getting validated by a Half Price Books' book buyer. "Your taste in books is amazing!" or "I haven't seen this title in forever!"; bibliophile sploosh. I've been trying to weed down my belongings and eventually tackled my beloved book collection. Half Price Books isn't going to pay you beaucoup credit, but at least your former prized possessions will be passed along to another book lover. And, you get a little scratch in return to buy a few books, used vinyl, or cultural memorabilia. This location is always clean and offers free coffee, the store attendants are friendly, and there is music, video games, movies, paper-goods, and other cool stuff if you are looking for more than books. The book-buying process met my expectations, although you should expect longer processing times on the weekends when the masses bring in umpteenth boxes of hardcover James Pattersons/Lee Childs/etc. and inundate the poor book buyers. I love this store. I like to come here and walk around, the feeling of this store makes me very happy. When I come into the store, you can feel the happiness this store has. The selection of books and Magazines is really neat. I have recently been interested in video games, and this store has a lot to offer! The amount of games and consoles help me grow my collection. I trade a lot of stuff to half priced books. And I get reasonable money back. Sometimes I got more then I payed for. I once sold 10 books for 40 dollars! Book selections and prices are decent...DVD/Blu-Ray prices are utterly absurd! During my pregnancy my husband and I came here a few times to stock up on books for the baby. The selection is ever changing so I never think of this as a one-stop book shopping experience. During our visits they didn't have copies of a few classic children's books we wanted, so we did stop in one of the larger book stores to supplement our baby library. All in all, we had a nice time there, even if we didn't find all we wanted. However, our last visit was a little surprising. We wanted copies of some of those less popular kid's B-movies from our childhoods. You know the ones? Sword in the Stone, Fox and the Hound, Robin Hood (the one with the super handsome fox), the 1977 Pete's Dragon, The Last Unicorn, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, The Cat from Outer Space, the terrifying cartoon of Watership Down. You get the idea. We looked at streaming prices since we travel a lot and they ranged from $7.99 to $10.99, we also looked at buying the DVDs new, which were the same price range. We thought Half Price Books would surely have some used DVDs for super cheap. WRONG!!! Robin Hood for $19.99, Fox and the Hound for $14.99, The Cat from Outer Space for $19.99, all used copies. Obviously, we will be opting for the streaming videos. I think Half Price Books really needs to revaluate their pricing on USED DVDs, these are the days of instant streaming, not the very early days of DVDs and Blu-Ray. What is discounted or "half price" about charging more for USED products, than streaming and new copies? read more

So many books, so little time. We read those books and then we bring them back in to get some money back for more books. My whole family enjoys reading and this is the second best place to get books, the library being number 1 because they are free. The staff in here is super hip and cool and they are always willing to help you find that special book. They also have vinyl records, board games, electronic games and other cool stuff. Before our last visit I looked over my cache of books at home to make sure I hadn't read any of them. I still have like 40 different books to read and I am at a bookstore looking at more books. Why? Why do I buy books when I have so many to read already? They know just the right formula in here to hook you into looking and then reeling you in with that book you thought you didn't need. It's the way they are displayed or maybe it's the discounted price, no it's the free coffee .... I don't know why I keep buying books but I do and I love shopping in here. read more

I have to avoid going here too much due to the amount of time and money I tend to spend here. Their selection is pretty good and you can usually find some of the latest books. There is even a wall specifically for this section. I am really impressed with the new location, they were previously located in Castleton. The new space seems larger and much more spacious than the older location. I love the fact how the rearranged the registers in the front so that there is now a dedicated area that is roped off and doesn't tend to spill out into the store and block the aisle. One of the biggest downsides to this store though is the parking. It is now located in a strip mall with less parking than they previously had. read more

This is one of my FAVORITE locations! I love the way the shop is set up. It's easy to browse and there is a lot of space to move around. They have such great deals! The clearance is my favorite! They have books, records, dvds, cds, comics and so much more! They also take items you may be getting rid of and give you money for them. I've never been offered that much for my old textbooks, but at least they offer that perk. This location has great customer service. The associates are always very helpful and friendly! Recently I bought two dvds from here, when I got home one wouldn't work in any console I had. So I took it back, and it was no problem. I explained and had my receipt and the process was so easy.
