I came here even through it was less than 4 stars because I know sometimes people can be tough on restaurants but I should have gone with all the averages reviews and not came. To start of the Benedict's English muffins were not cooked and they were smothered with cold butter, yuke . Then my wife avocado toast to and out and it wasn't toasted and sent it back and waited almost 30mins and had to remind the person who brought out the food. Lastly, my son's omelette was over cooked and smelled of it. Listen, I'm a big foodie and appreciate quality food and don't mind paying more and in fact prefer but maybe what they need is to deliver quality food and not focus on just serving a long line. This is a great spot to study or to just meet up with friends and get food and wine. It's located in Southtown. I normally go here to study and you will find a lot of other people here so I g the same mostly college students from St. Mary's. The food is very good. The items I have tried include: down with the thickness egg rolls- egg rolls filled with mac and cheese and pulled pork I believe, the cheat day bowl- friend chicken tenders with hot sauce on top of Mac and cheese, impossible burger and spicy chicken sandwich. Their matcha latte is amazing and they have a large drink and wine selection also. Used to be pretty cool but now it sucks. As a service worker, I'd normally say the customer is almost always wrong, but these baristas really have a bad attitude for seemingly no reason. I have observed myself and others get treated rudely for simply walking up to the counter and waiting for assistance, asking questions about the menu, etc. Aside from that, food and drinks are mid at best with the exception of some of their cocktails. Halcyon in the Blue Star area is A-OK. Location: Halcyon is conveniently located in the Southtown area, inside the Blue Star Complex. Unfortunately this side of town has become really popular during the last few years, and parking has become a luxury (not Halcyon's fault). Service: I've been here multiple times and services has always been a hit or miss. In the mornings they are definitely much nicer and service is really quick, but as the day goes by, the services starts going down. The girl that works as a cashier in the mornings (usually weekends) is always so nice to me and my puppy, but the bartender can sometimes be a little rude. Cleanliness: YIKES! They definitely need to clean all of their couches and pillows, because they are very full of God knows what. Halcyon used to have a cool vibe, where you felt like you could come and hang out with your friends for hours, but now is like an old (and dirty) coffee shop. I've come here enough times to say that many of the stains in the couches are definitely a few months old. Also, every time I've visited Halcyon (no matter the time of day) there is always a dirty tables. Price: Could be better...that's all I have to say. Conclusion: Halcyon is not your most affordable coffee place in the area, and is also not the most convenient. I work up a sweat in about 10 minutes just from sitting. I had trouble connecting my laptop to the wifi and was told to join a server (by an employee) which did not seem to work at all. I ordered an iced London Fog and a Turkey Brie sandwich. I got a hot London Fog (in August??), my sandwich and a different bag of chips from what I ordered. They seem to be severely understaffed so we did our best to be understanding about the crazy slowness, especially considering they had hiring positions on the front door. They used to have $1 champagne flute mimosas and $2 wine glass mimosas. Maybe due to COVID it is now $3 and $6, which is still better than every other brunch place especially considering they give you 90+% champagne with a splash of juice, the way it should be :p i hope when the world "gets back to normal", they'll bring those back. We got lavender mimosa and the grapefruit mimosa. The lavender one was too sweet for my taste, and the grapefruit one was alright. I got the goat cheese arugula toast, and it was delicious. My boyfriend got the southwestern skillet because he was "suckered into ordering it because of the sweet potatoes", but sadly noted he couldn't even taste any sweet potato. The dish was too greasy and everything in it just tasted like grease. We got the overnight french toast per a review recommendation, as a celebration for his birthday. This wasn't my first visit but I wasn't too impressed this time around. We went purposely for hot chocolate. We got there around 4pm. To order was not busy at all but it was pretty packed in general. There wasn't really anywhere to sit and the chairs they did have in the back were missing cushions. They were big wooden chairs so it was a little uncomfortable. The restrooms were also under construction so you couldn't use those. We ordered the hot chocolate flight which is something they have for a limited time. We had seen pictures on social media so we were pretty excited to try it. It wasn't too impressive. The price is not bad for the flight though it was only $6. This was my second time here, first time eating here. The brunch menu seemed okay (I had my eye set on a few things from the regular menu- which I'll come back for). I started with an Insomniac coffee which was very good and very strong (in my mind I wanted several cocktails to try but this was a sipper). My friend ordered a Thai coffee (which wasn't the drip style like he said in Thailand), and it was room temp- no steam or anything. Hmmm I had the El Rey salad which was good and a lemon ricotta pancake to share- amazing, but make sure they bring syrup. My friend had the Country Style eggs bene. He didn't say anything whether it was good or not. The atmosphere was nice and relaxed, but very loud and quite hot inside (we were at the very back by the windows, but it was cloudy outside). If you're a coffee connoisseur, this is not the spot for you. They offer a lot of things though, mid coffee, baked goods, food, alcohol, great ambience, access to the river walk. Then I get to the front and I just want to order a coffee for my walk back and the girl decides to stop taking orders to bus a table when there's about 18 other open tables. It was busy noon time, the barista didn't ask me whether I want my matcha to be sweetened, and just added sugar anyway. The tables are almost never clean, and when you bring it up its still a wait to get a wipe down. The table service situation makes no sense since the host is never at the front and people expect the typical fight for seating arrangement. The wait is significant, the staff gets really rude when asked anything, and the attempt at live music or a dj is lousy. No one comes here to listen to that, please stop. I went in open mike night so it was hopping but the AC was not keeping up and they only had two folks taking food orders, serving food and at the bar. My friends and I decided to give Halcyon another try today and we were thoroughly surprised by what we ordered. This place is usually very busy but it's pretty low key in the late afternoon on a weekday. I'm used to trying to go here on the weekends for lunch or brunch when it's nearly impossible to get a table. This afternoons visit was for a light snack and drink. The espresso martini that my friend ordered was robust and flavorful with a sweet touch. We also ordered the s'mores plate for 2, which was more than enough for our party considering there were three of us. The concept is really cute-- indoor s'mores over a small, controlled flame. Love that this spot is open so late and continues to serve food. Best food item on the menu is other fried chicken biscuit with this ah-mazing sweet and spicy sauce. You can find both alcohol and non-alcoholic beverages though they're all overpriced for that they are in my opinion (no "made from scratch/ in-house" recipes). But I suppose it's just the times we live in... can't pay under $12+ for 2 non-alcoholic beverages anywhere. Sunday brunch is fun if you like jamming to a live DJ. I've just discovered this place with their happy hour and REVERSE HAPPY HOUR. The deals are pretty fantastic I must say. Their sangria is on point they have a Long Island Coffee that is straight up the booziest thing on their menu. These two drinks are $5 (or $6....?) on happy hour. And they also have $3 on all beers. I can't forget about their food. We just tried the chicken biscuit, the avocado toast with salmon, and the nacho tots. I honestly love them all. The chicken biscuit was moist and sweet, the avocado toast was nice and refreshing, and the tots had huge chucks of STEAK! It was pretty good. I think these dishes are also $5 on HH. All and all, I would (and have) come back time and time again for the food and atmosphere. They have WiFi for people to study during the day. They have board games but most of the pieces are missing. I'm in San Antonio for a family emergency and my one respite is visiting local coffee shops...my goal is to go to a different shop at least once a day. My sixth stop on my self-guided caffeine "tour" was Halcyon Southtown in the Blue Arts district. I loved the vibe and the locale...right on Riverwalk. It had ample outdoor seating with great views. I wasn't able to take in the cool vibes...I had to get take-out: two hot teas and the Cheat Day bowl (smoked Gouda and pepper jack Mac and cheese topped with fried chicken and hot sauce). The staff was efficient and Halcyon practiced social-distancing guidelines and protocols. The Mac and cheese was creamy and flavorful but there was only a slight hint of hot sauce - not enough kick for me. I love all things spicy! I would love to dive into their brunch menu...it looks delicious. I wish I would've had more time to hang out at Halcyon. read more

Firstly parking is such a breeze here which is so comforting. Walking into this place you immediately get blasted into the very cool decor and style of this place. The vibes are vibing. Study spot galore with the various seating arrangements and the inside being very spacious. Artwork all around is very eye catching. The service was nice and quick. However the reason behind the rating of the three stars is the actual coffee and food. Coffee was reasonably priced but was very bitter. Moving onto the food, the chicken wrap was very leafy and not my thing but the people I came with enjoyed it. (I don't enjoy salads so I will admit to being biased) The cheeseburger wasn't bad and at a decent size. Food was a lil pricy tho. I was excited to try this spot but I was disappointed and don't think I am likely to return. I met a friend for brunch and the restaurant was busy but not crazy busy. We were seated quickly and our drink order was taken. We quickly decided on meal options and ordered when our drinks arrived. Waited a reasonable time for food. Then we never saw waitress again. I understand many restaurants are short staffed so we were patient. Biggest issue is food was bland. I ordered a veggie skillet and it look extremely appetizing but it was really bland. I requested some Hollandaise sauce to attempt to add a little flavor and that was a huge fail. The Hollandaise sauce was thick, bland like a side of whipped butter and bland mayonaise combined, unlike any Hollandaise sauce I have ever had and I love hollandaise sauce. My friend ordered the chorizo blanco migas skillet and said it seemed bland except for the chorizo in it. She felt like it lacked flavor despite having so many other ingredients. The overnight french toast had an overload of sugary sweetness but lacked other flavors. It really is more like a dessert. All in all, I am reluctant to come back. read more

I went to Halcyon this past weekend for brunch with one of my friends. This was my first time ever going to this restaurant so I wasn't really sure what to expect. When we arrived, the place was crowded. Absolutely no room to park in the small parking lot behind Halcyon. Eventually, we parked on the street in a nearby neighborhood and just walked over. It wasn't a terrible walk so we honestly didn't mind. There wasn't a line at the front so someone was immediately able to seat us. The only available place for us to sit was outside at the tiny bar, which we settled for. Eventually, when one of the tables freed up my friend and I migrated over to it and took a seat there. We still ended up sitting outside but neither of us minded since the weather was just PERFECT. We were quickly served our drinks after we sat down. I ordered the cappuccino and my friend ordered the Long Island Iced Coffee. The cappuccino was honestly one of the best that I've had in a while. The flavor was good and intense. I also loved how they put a bear on top of my drink. It looked almost too pretty to drink! The Long Island Iced Coffee was also great! It was pretty strong but the flavor was so nice that it didn't really matter. The food took an oddly long time to arrive after we ordered it but it was so busy that we kind of understood. Luckily, we brought a card game to play while we waited so it didn't feel like forever. Eventually, our food arrived. I ordered the Overnight French Toast and my friend ordered the Eggs Benedict. The Overnight French Toast was not what I was expecting it to be, it was honestly better than what I was expecting. It was fresh, and well-presented. The cream cheese on top was amazing. It wasn't too sweet, but just perfect. The fruit on tp paired perfectly with the cream cheese topping. The chocolate on top was hidden beneath the cream cheese so it surprised me but it was an amazing addition to the dish. The staff at Halcyon were friendly but not exceptional. I liked their atmosphere and the DJ that they had playing music during their brunch hours. I am also a huge fan of their dog-friendly atmosphere. I just wasn't a fan of their small parking lot, and their prices are a bit high for what they're offering. Overall, I would highly recommend Halcyon to anyone looking for a cute place to go for brunch. You might have to splurge a bit but it is totally worth it. read more
