Jerry and Crew Saved The Day…read more I was traveling to Chicago from Marquette and my oil light went on in Rapid River. I had just had an oil change at Midas the week before in Chicago. This was pretty stressful as I had 300 miles to go to get home. Luckily, I saw a Midas in Escanaba and stopped in and talked to Jerry, the manager. He immediately put me at ease saying they would check it out. It turns out that the oil filter housing was loose and oil was all over the engine. He had his guys clean it up and I was back on the road in under an hour and can you believe this- No Charge. Seriously, what a great place when another Midas totally screwed up my car. I could tell Jerry was a friendly and honest guy the way he talked to customers, especially those who were obviously repeat customers. People in the Escanaba area are lucky to have a reputable place to have their vehicles taken care of with GREAT customer service! Thanks Jerry!

The "Midas Touch"? Yup. sure did --- NOT! Midas was sold to a discount parts company in 2025. My…read morelast(and I mean last) experience with them in Escanaba MI was not good. My exhaust was loud. Need new muffler and a few feet of pipe to fix. Quoted me a price that seemed decent. But, a couple of months later I was looking under my car for a different reason and noticed the new exhaust pipe installed was smaller than OEM size. WTF! This "Midas" brand is no longer required to perform quality proffesional work expected as usual. So, you decide.

Prior to moving to Minnesota, my wife and I purchased a used car from Riverside. The claims made…read moreincluded one owner, local trade, and that the owner was a reputable member of the community that worked for the Secretary of State. Aside from a "Clean" history, it was clearly indicated on the RD-108 "Application for Michigan Title and Registration" form that there was no damage or prior salvage. The car was priced appropriately, and the salesman even cut $500 dollars off the asking price right away. He claimed they didn't know much about the car, but I think he was lying. I took his word for it, and brought the car home. My mistake. The car didn't leave my garage in Michigan for 30 days. Why? Because it would not start after I had parked it there. What I found included a broken starter motor that was damaged by a failing flywheel. The oil pan drain was stripped out, and the sway bar was broken. Sway bars are very durable, so how did this one manage to snap? Keep reading to find out. I believe Riverside knew that the car needed major repairs and wanted to get rid of it ASAP. I will also assume some responsibility as I did not conduct a thorough inspection prior to buying. After 30 days of making weekend trips from Minnesota, I finally had the car fixed and on the road. This was only a minor problem compared to what we learned next. Upon arrival in Minnesota, I applied for a MN Title. I received one in 5 weeks that had a big red stamp on it. "Prior Salvage". I called Riverside and asked them what there history report said about the vehicle. The woman on the phone found the record and said there was nothing on the history. I paid for a separate vehicle history and found that before arriving at Riverside, the car was checked into Corey's Auto Salvage in Ingalls, MI. Damage type was listed as "Junk And Salvage". Deposition said "Sold". However, this report did not say when and where the car was damaged. I called Riverside again. I explained to the woman on the phone that my report said Corey's Auto Salvage on it. There was silence before she replied that the report they have listed a "Minor" accident in Florida. I asked for their report and she obliged. Upon reviewing their report, the accident was not minor. It is described as a front end impact that resulted in deployed airbags and the vehicle being towed from the scene. The next item on the report is that the car is being registered in Michigan. The date correlates with its arrival at Corey's. I called Corey's. They could not legally provide too much information, but told me exactly what I needed to hear. They only buy TOTALED vehicles from insurance. With this new information I called Riverside again. Coincidentally, the salesman who sold us the vehicle had called a couple weeks prior to check on how the car was treating us. I thought it was only appropriate that I talked to him. His demeanor quickly changed when I explained what was going on. To put it simply, I told him that I didn't want this to get stupid. They obviously sold me damaged goods. The Bill of Sale and RD-108 should be null and void. Give me my money back. You can have the car back to auction off or whatever you so choose. Needless to say. Riverside decided to act stupid. They claimed that they had no way of knowing and that the sale, although unfortunate, is final. We decided to pursue legal action. I contacted the best lemon law Lawyer in Michigan. She obtained a certified title history (This is a government document that goes into much greater detail about a vehicle history than any online history report). She had some bad news for us. The car had been totaled and was obviously the victim of a title washing scheme. Michigan is apparently too lenient with titling laws, hence you can total a vehicle out of state, and sell it to a Michigan salvage yard. They fix it, and alakazam you have a clean title. Her honest recommendation was to drop the case. The reasons being 1.) that the court costs would be very high. For example our next move would be obtaining a court approved appraisal of the vehicle which could cost $1500+. 2.) Riverside would likely exhaust us financially in court, knowing that they have the upper hand in a state that does little to enforce titling laws. 3.) Legal action would be very time consuming and we could not afford that as professionals working two states away. Lessons learned: Obtain 2-3 vehicle history reports to get a more complete history Don't purchase a vehicle from Riverside

When I inquired with printed-off pricing information, the gentleman stated "that's our normal markup." I let him know I would never be returning. Total bill: $664.09.
