This pleasant casual pub is in the clubhouse at the Spring Lake Golf Resort and open to the public!…read more Atmosphere- It's a bright and quite large space with lots of golf kitsch on the walls which is no surprise. There is a bar that seats about a dozen. Pro Tip- If you park as directed by the signs you will be confronted by a formidable set of stairs. If that is a challenge for anyone in your party, swing around to the left of the clubhouse and you'll spot a small parking lot which much easier access. Adult Libations- Full bar. I spotted about ten taps with several popular craft brews and there are a few wines. Customer Service- My excellent bartender/server claimed to have worked there for 14 years. If that's true, they hired her at about age 6 or 7! When I told her that she said she loved me! Food- One-page American pub style menu. You've seen it all before. Fried food, sandwiches, burgers and salads. The lunch special was a pulled pork sandwich topped with slaw with fries & baked beans as sides for about $8 so I went with it. As you can see from my picture it was nicely plated. The bun was buttered and toasted very nicely. The fries were crispy and hot, and the baked beans had bits of pork and onion and were very tasty. Now for the sandwich. As soon as I picked it up, I knew I was in trouble. There was a massive amount of tasty pulled pork and I thought there was no way the bun could handle it. I was right and after eating about 1/3 I finished the remainder with a fork. Note to Chef- If you switch to a toasted Kaiser roll that can handle the load, you've got yourself a 5-star sandwich! Despite the misstep with the incredibly messy sandwich, all the food was very good, and I had a nice time. This Golf Resort is off the beaten path but if you are out that way it's a solid choice for a casual lunch or dinner.

It's a little off the beaten path for me and I'm a lazy ass so it took me until this weekend to get there! Arriving- It's in the clubhouse of the North Golf Course in the Highland's Ridge Community. Follow the signs for that clubhouse or let your GPS do the work. If you are familiar with the area, it was formally The Tavern. Ambience- So this is what a lot of folks would call a Country Club restaurant. As I had patronized the old tenants, I was curious how they were going to transform it into an Irish Pub. The answer is they didn't! It looks nothing like and Irish Pub. It's a large space with lots of natural light and traditional furniture. It has lots of outside seating that's covered with ceiling fans and many seats have a nice view! There is a very small bar that seats about six. In short, it looks like a Country Club restaurant. So much for pub ambience! Customer Service- Awesome, maybe seven stars! I had substantial interactions with the manager, bartender, and a server. All were exceptional. Adult Libations- Definitely not a pub style bar. It's a full bar with just a few taps but nothing special. Food- Like the ambience, it's an American menu with a couple of Irish dishes. There's Bangers & Mash and Shepard's Pie. Other than that, they throw in a couple of Irish terms to deceive you but it's really an American menu. There're enough choices to satisfy most folks. See their website. I ordered Irish Brisket Flatbread- Brisket, bacon, caramelized onions, diced tomatoes, BBQ sauce, mozzarella cheese @ $13. It was out in good time and plated very nicely. Plenty of food for the price so good value. The flatbread was nicely crisp. I love caramelized onions and that's the base here. Everything was very fresh. Plenty of brisket. Unfortunately, the onions overpowered the other ingredients, so the flavors were not balanced. It was tasty but needed a little work to be a winner. Conclusion- If you're looking for an Irish Pub, you're in the wrong place. If you're looking for an American menu that has some potential with a great staff and beautiful outside seating, give it a try. As they are new and the staff is awesome combined with the outside seating, I'm going to be a little charitable and say four stars!

- The iconic Slaw Burger survived! -…read more This is the sister location of the Blue Lagoon Saloon down in Sebring. Hence the similar name. The previous owners were famous state-wide for their Slaw Burgers! Folks drove 100 miles to buy them! They literally sold them for decades. The new owners insured it lives on! Arriving- Teeny tiny Frostproof is a straight shot, about 5 miles, off US Route 27. You end up on Main Street where these guys are located. Free street parking and more free parking around the side. Ambience- A beautiful remodel with lots of wood. A long straight bar with comfortable stools with backs. A just the right height, tiled foot railing makes for a comfortable bar experience. Behind the bar is mounted a long line of huge TVs for your viewing pleasure. It's an awesome place to watch a game! See my picture. Of course there are also tables, booths, and even pool tables. TouchTunes & Wi-Fi- I recommend the App for using the juke box. In this part of Florida, you can expect a lot of classic rock and country. You need a password for the Wi-Fi and its typical retail speed. Adult Libations- Full bar plus 12 taps. I enjoyed a Space Dust IPA. It was 8.2% APV, ice cold and delicious. Customer Service- Five stars! I enjoyed a great bartender/server that was friendly and efficient. Food- American bar & casual food. Lots of fried food and a great variety of sandwiches. I went with the iconic Slaw Burger & Fries along with my IPA and it was $18 pre-tip. It came out quickly, piping hot and with unique plating. Juicy and savory with the added snap of the slaw. Add nicely cooked fries and it was a superior lunch. Conclusion- If you are traveling through Highlands County, divert here for a great lunch or dinner. Highly recommended if you're watching a sporting event!

Once you are closing in there is excellent signage. Of course, you're parking at the clubhouse and there is a decent lot. Watch out for golf carts! Atmosphere- This is a golf club restaurant that is open to the public. It's a big, bright, airy place with two large rooms and a beautiful bar. As many of the customers are just off the golf course, it's very casual. It has quite a few TVs for catching a game but it's definitely not a sports bar. Customer Service- Our server was a bit of a mix. She was very new, very nice, but lacking in knowledge. With a little time, I think she'll be great. Food- A combo of unique and classic American fare. You've got your burgers, chicken parm and alfredo dishes. There is a selection of flatbreads that are awesome, and a giant pretzel served with warm beer cheese that is incredible to share! I was on a mission. I had seen an 8 oz. skirt steak with chimichurri on the menu. It's not often I see chimichurri and I was drooling. I paired it with some fries and looked forward to an amazing lunch. It was out in good time. For a lunch plate, it was a very nice presentation. The nicely seared steak was coated with chimichurri with some additional served on the sided. The pickled onions were a nice touch. The fries were beautifully cooked. The steak was fantastic and a perfect medium rare. The chimichurri was bursting with flavor and the fries were exceptional! The meal was an easy five stars, but the service was a bit off. I'm going with four stars and a strong recommendation to get the skirt steak!
