Emily cut my hair recently and I was very pleased with the cut and the service. I had one of those…read morebad hair days and scheduled an appointment that same afternoon. I came a few minutes early and was seen right away, with no wait. I asked Emily what she thought I should do with my hair and she said she really liked my current cut and suggested a trim, taking off a half-inch. I was pleased with her honest judgement: I had gotten a cut in Montreal a few months back and was very happy with the cut except it was overgrown. She trimmed it quickly yet skillfully, blow dried my coarse wavy hair into a flattering style and then trimmed and textured the ends so the cut lays well. Best of all, my hair looks great even when I don't heat-style it. Dried naturally, the waves are nicely layered and just seem to fall into place--a sign of a good cut. I've tried a lot of places in Elmhurst, but this is the first place where I've gotten a great cut at a reasonable price ($35 with first-time customer discount, not incl. tip). This isn't a cutting-edge, hyped up salon--it's a comfortable, relaxed place, mostly patronized by middle-aged moms like me (as far as I could tell from my weekday afternoon visit). No frills, easy-going, no blasting music, no product-pushing. Just a great cut and great service. I'll be back! Disclosure: I will receive a $20 discount (or 20%, I can't remember) for this review, but I'd give Emily and the salon five stars anyway!

I went to Mylissa's using a YouSwoop coupon for a haircut…read more Location/Ambiance: I have to agree with other reviewers who mentioned that the location, while conveniently located in the Loop, is hard to find and is very atypical for a salon - it's basically just a small office converted into a tiny salon. However, it is clean and well-stocked and didn't feel weird. Hairstyle: My hairstylist - not Mylissa - was really nice and listened to me and was easy to talk to, I liked her a lot. The haircut itself was not the best I've ever had but it wasn't a disaster either - one weird thing was that I asked her to blow dry my hair straight and I have wavy hair but it's not impossible to straighten - as soon as I walked out the door a gust of wind messed it all up again! Summary: SO I wasn't really impressed and probably won't be going back to pay full price.

At no fault of the salon, and for those that want to get a good cut and come here... be forewarned. There are some lots to park and some meters, but the train if you really need to use it, is close by. The building that its' in is older and ...classic is the word that comes to mind (I love old architecture.) Really friendly atmosphere, and the whole staff was social and welcoming. Mylissa her self shampooed and cut my hair, asking me how I liked it cut, and some of her products she was using. My hair looed great and didn't have that look of alot of product in it, even though she used alittle, which was all natural. I would probably ask if I had a choice during the shampoo, I think a hot towel on the face would be a cool addition. But everything else...full marks. I am sure she takes walkins as well as appointments but not sure.

Mary has been my hair stylist for over 10 years; when she opened this business I was happy to follow her there. She always gives me a fantastic haircut (I've had everything from faux hawks, to bobs, to longer and layered), she never touches my bangs without asking (I have trauma from terrible bang trims in the past), and she is honest about what the best options are for my hair. She is also great with fantasy colors; I've had a few colors done by her, mostly pinks, reds, and purples, and they always turn out vibrant and eye catching. My hair always looks silky and feels soft when we're done with my appointment.

She canceled my appointment due to her being ill. Fair enough. After my checking in with her every few weeks to see how she was doing; I quickly got the idea she no longer wanted to cut my hair. The weeks went to a few months. She gave no option to have a different hair stylist to cut my hair. My point is she is a dishonest person. She lacks character. Nobody should treat a person like she did. Stay away from Janine . You may need your hair done for an occasion and she may decide she just doesn't want to cut and style your hair anymore. She lacks integrity
