She talked sooooooo much about her experience doing Japanese straight perms and how great she was. She insulted me by talking crap about the quality of my hair for 4 hours. This was not my first time getting this treatment. I have gotten this done many many times when I lived in California. Her application of the product was extremely sloppy. I was skeptical and as I thought the treatment did not take. My hair is exactly the same as it was before I saw her. By the way when I made the appointment she said $400 and made me deposit half. After the treatment was done she asked for $300, totaling the cost to $500. I asked her for an explanation and she said it took her longer to do than she thought. What the heck? I went in about 2 weeks ago to get an eyebrow wax. While I normally also get a bikini wax, I feel I've learned from past mistakes: Make sure the esthetician is GOOD before committing to spending so much money. Kat waxed my brows. It was pretty lame. She basically just traced the outlines of the eyebrows that were already there. If that's all you need, GREAT. Though there's no need to pay $20 for that. I can get a package of Salley Hansen wax strips and cut them into that shape. For $20 I expect more. I expect for my eyebrows to be trimmed, re-shaped (because I have crazy brows like that), and made to last quite well for as long as possible. None of these thing happened. When she was "done" she handed me the mirror and missed quite a few important things, like, y'know, the hairs that grow onto my nose making me have a pseudo-unibrow. I shouldn't have to point those out. Especially not after the esthetician is "done". Then there were some delightful hairs left on the ends of my brows. Also not what I would call "done". When I asked her to wax the top of my brows to give them a clean line, she said that waxing the top would cut off my arch. I understand what she was saying, but she seems to have missed the point. I didn't want her to chop off my arch. I wanted her to rip out the stray hairs at the top that make my eyebrows look thicker and more sloppy than they are/need to be. I got to the car, looked in my mirror, and noticed still more hairs that should've been removed. Because my makeup bag was recently stolen, I don't have tweezers immediately available. I went back to the salon to ask to use their tweezers. Kat was busy with another client. Another lady asked if I wanted her to do it. With the experience that I'd just had, I didn't trust her. I finished plucking my own brows. It was pretty bad. I have no idea what they're like for hair cuts/styling, but I have once again learned not to trust a hair stylist to wax me. From now on, it will only be someone who specialized in skin care/waxing. Please heed this warning and do the same. It's worth it. EDIT: 01.11.11 After reading my review of her services, Kat (owner), was kind enough to send me this sweet email: "Subject: you're just an unhappy hairy little troll Reading your extremely negative reviews makes me sure the problem is YOU - new to the area you say - were you run out of your last homebase? Try a little happiness and light into your life girl. :-(" Clearly, not everyone can take criticism well. But replying with rudeness like that makes me think even less of this woman and her salon. Especially considering that after reading a negative review, she absolutely had opportunity to mend the circumstances by being more customer service oriented. How about something like, "I'm sorry that you had a poor experience. Can we offer you a facial to make up for it?" Or SOMETHING, ANYTHING other than just being snide. There are ways to make right your unhappy customers. Replying with emails such as the one that I received isn't one of them. read more

BREAKING UPDATE: I bit the bullet and got the Japanese Ionic Thermal Reconditioning straightening treatment done today and a brow wax. Not only did I have a blast with Kat (very good energy; very professional yet personable) but . . . . I left and the first text I sent to my boyfriend was: "I am beyond hot. Make that scorching". And it's true. She's efficient, effective, and just . . excellent! Not only does she answer hair-related questions and make style recommendations (if you ask), she makes you look GOOOOOOOD. Regarding brow wax: I told her she needed to put some back into my wax and unless my skin looks like raw meat afterwards, I'm not satisfied. She complied. Now, a hairdresser that gives in to sadistic requests (trust me - I know my brows and I know what works) is what I'm talking about! I have found my new hairdresser/salon. read more

She stood in the window with her arms crossed glaring at me and the second I stopped parking, she walked away. I've had my license for over 10 years. I was visiting Cincinnati from Seattle and needed a spur of the moment touch-up, and Kat cheerfully fit me into her busy schedule. She's also a lot of fun to talk to, and gave me some really great and useful hair tips that I'd never heard about before. Love the look and convenient location of this salon- very chill and spacious. Just started going here when my hair stylist switched locations. I had to follow her- she's amazing. Aubrey has a rare talent- she looks at your hair and automatically knows what to do with it, and it looks good- every time- without fail. She comes up with a fresh, new look every visit and has a knack for edgy cuts and inventive colors. If she worked at a high-end salon she'd be an Artistic Director, but she keeps her pricing accessible. Her cuts are a bargain and worthwhile every time. For anyone considering going to Hair Art Studio, I definitely recommend it and the owner, Kat! I just had the Japanese Straightening done on my hair at Hair Art Studio; Kat, who did my hair, was so professional and inviting and being a freshmen in college, even though I was nervous to get my hair straightened at first, she was extremely flexible with scheduling. Any questions that I had, I could call and she was happy to answer! I am now a sophomore in college, and just had it straightened again, as I have thick hair that now required me to come in again, but once again, I followed all of her helpfully detailed instructions afterward and my hair turned out exactly as I wanted it! My hair is not even close to being able to deal with, and I honestly was apprehensive about how much the hair treatment could even do, but Kat assured me that she would do her best, and she definitely surpassed all of my expectations. I just moved to Cincinnati last month but had been considering a permanent straightening for a year or so. It usually takes me a minimum of 45 min to blow dry and straighten (and re-straighten...) my long hair and I'm way too lazy to do that regularly. Like the previous reviewer, I also bit the bullet and got the BioIonic straightening done by Kat at Hair Art Studio. My hair was in good condition (no color or chemical treatments) so I was told I was a good candidate for the process. The BioIonic straightening process was straightforward; Kat was friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient (it took ~3 hrs) and my hair turned out the straightest and smoothest that it's ever been. It was also much cheaper than I had expected (I read estimates from quite a few salons and the range seemed to be ~$400- 700). I waited to write this review until I had washed my hair and tried to style it myself, rationale being that it always looks better in the salon. I shampooed/ conditioned today and plugged in my flat iron while I blow dried. Turned out I didn't even need the flat iron- it looks identical to what it did in the salon, with no special (i.e. costly) shampoos, creams, or sprays! If you're looking to get a Japanese straightening/ thermal reconditioning treatment, I'd highly recommend Kat. read more

I am really sad to write an unflattering review, so much so that I was all conflicted about posting my thoughts in a public space where customer thoughts reign supreme. I had my haircut here twice and noticed after both cuts that the ends of my hair were so crooked that it looked like I had not had haircut in months. really unpleasant feeling after dropping close to 50 bucks on a trim. I kept trying to justify this by thinking that maybe the damage to my hair (self inflicted) from dying and chemical straightening was causing my ends to be choppy and all outta wack. but after pulling out section after section of my hair and examining it closely while feeling that something is just 'off' about how my hair texture feels I realized that my hairdresser did a really poor job, so much so that I've no idea how to fix the crooked lengths and choppy ends that are pretty much on every part of my head. every strand is a different length, every piece is going in different directions as if the scissor hit it vertically cutting it in the shape of tiny V's versus a clean line horizonally. this will make it difficult to grow out and cut in the future since it's so pulled apart. my hair is very naturally curly so I doubt anyone will be able to tell. But I certainly can and this makes me really sad given the fact that I really *like* my stylist. At the same time I cannot justify that a professional hand with professional scissors would leave my locks in such a state. I think that for the price bracket of this salon and this being my second try it is a shame to be feeling like my hair was handled this way. I do not have easy hair to cut but this is unfair to say the least. It is really damaged from the cut and I would be remiss to come again or make this my regular place. again, wah wah. read more

My 10 year old daughter and I went to Hair Art Studio to get an "up-do" for my sister's wedding. The owner, Kat, answered the phone and did our hair. The price was certainly right ($40 each). The thing that impressed me most, however, was how Kat taught my daughter how to wash/brush/style her hair appropriately. I paid $406, plus tip $80..........that money was my 1 month pay, hard earned, part time job with no health benefits and no paid vacation, not to mention, had no more money in my account and was in the negative with $17. I called the owner, Kat and told her I was unhappy with the procedure. She told me that it is the way she does the Japanese HS. She didn't even offer to re-do my hair the proper way. I have been getting this procedure for my hair done for 8 years now, and not once did they mess up my hair or did it incorrect. I even have pictures I took of my hair afterwards, it looks so bad, what a shame I cannot post these pix here. Word of advice, go online and type: Step by step Instructions for Japanese Hair Straightening. Knowing the proper way and consulting with the real experts will save you a lot of grief and money.
