On my way to the sunflower maze, I realized we hadn't eaten lunch. Shortly thereafter, I located a building that appeared to serve lunch. Here is what I have learned about this building: Built in 1883, it is the second-oldest continuously operating business in the county. Hainesville holds the second-coldest temperature in New Jersey and Sussex County, at -32° F. Like you'll find in small Vermont towns, this is a local place that has a little bit of everything on the shelves and behind the counters. It is truly a general store in the big box era. Like you'll find in small Vermont towns, everyone in this building is wonderful to talk to, including everyone behind the counter (young and old) and anyone who walks in. This is clearly locals serving locals, and it survives on this community spirit. It also survives on the delicious food they serve. I ordered up a custom melt and my companion had one of their menu lunch items. We agreed that the deli is generous with ingredients, the food was delicious, and fresh-cooked. They used to be amazing. For years before and after they bouth the store their bakery products were top shelf and I would buy their muffins a dozen at a time. A year or so ago they shut down the main store and their Deli only is open with limited hours. But still the muffins and bakery items were good. Now we got their blueberry muffins again today, and I don't know if they stopped making their own and outsourced. But their muffins are like every other pasty store bought gross muffin out there. Very disappointing. No reason to keep returning now. read more

Great sandwiches. Pastrami Reuben and a Jersey Sloppy Joe. Big, big sandwiches, very good value for the price. We also grabbed a piece of carrot cake and apple pie -- recommended by a friend and they were both excellent. My only quibble was with the cake - I prefer cream cheese icing, but otherwise the cake itself was outstanding. Chocolate chip cookies were also very good and well priced. I ordered a jersey staple Taylor ham egg and cheese SPK (salt pepper ketchup) what I received was the holly grail of said jersey staple! It was the perfect roll fresh and crips that followed a perfectly cooked egg that the salt and pepper complimented like a glorious symphony! Then four perfectly cooked Taylor Ham slices! Between all that was the American cheese in its place and melted to perfection. The ketchup followed up like the grand finally. Everything was symmetrically placed and made with Love. The most magical breakfast sandwich I have had in my 20 years enjoying this Jersey breakfast. I normally would have taken a picture but it was so incredible i decided to enjoy it all to myself. The staff and owner are such lovely and kind people. We came in to try the "Blue Ribbon" pies and my oh my they are delicious. We travel all the way from Paterson NJ just to get a pie at least once a month. The apple crumb is our favorite but trust me you can't go wrong with any of the pies and also try the signature breakfast sandwich I can't think of the name but you'll know it when you see it. read more

We were staying up in Sandyston and although I had not been up there in a while, I remembered that the Layton General Store made amazing breakfast sandwiches. Not getting cell service, which is usual, but having a menu (that was apparently old- as we found) that said they opened at 7:00 am, we left around 10:00...and upon arriving, we were told, from out the window of the Store, that they didn't open until 11:00...old menu aside, how do you serve breakfast if you first open at 11:00...on a Saturday! So, we left, drove a little north up 206, and we stopped outside of the Hainseville General Store...and it's all that the Layton General Store was and much more. Very well done pork roll egg and cheese sandwiches and equally as good lunch sandwiches too, all served up by very courteous and friendly people. We got the basics because we had to get back to go tubing but everything in the deli case looked good and the store itself was very, old school cool with stuff hanging on the walls. So, if you are up in Layton or Sandyston, and you just want a quick breakfast or grab and go lunch, stop in and hit this place up. NOTE- to the Layton General's defense, the Greek couple who purchased it reportedly serve up some of the best Greek food in the area so they might have just chosen to go that route in lieu of serving breakfast. read more

Hands down best pies I've ever had. I order them every Thanksgiving and when I go for lunch -I buy one of the slices they have for sale. If you read this then you must absolutely stop heck you have to go out of your way and stop at this place. The pies are amazing and weigh 5lbs easily made fresh daily.
