My favorite Chinese food in the Orlando area! Moved from LA about a year and a half ago and originally I was struggling to find Chinese that was similar to what I enjoyed back home. Took some trial and error until I came across this place. This is the kind of spot that you KNOW is gonna be amazing due to the ambiance - kinda grungy (respectfully), photos of the food on an illuminated board, notes written on the wall on paper that has become yellowed with time. My favorite dishes here are the sesame beef, house pan fried noodles, and veggie egg foo young. Oh and the mushu pork is damn good too, especially their plum sauce. Overall, decent experience at Hai San during the week. We ordered take out one night and went in for a pick up. The staff was busy and quick to retrieve our order. The cost was good for what we received. We ordered the general tso chicken combination and the bourbon chicken combination. The general tso was a little on the spicy side, which is how I like it, but the chicken itself was a little hard. The bourbon chicken was delicious and well seasoned. I don't know what it is, but there were like 5 cooks in there and we had to wait almost an hour for our mediocre Chinese food. There were people coming in and out, getting their food before us. I assume they're call ins, but there's nowhere that indicates that it's better to call in an order. How are you going to sell sweet and sour pork, without the sweet and sour sauce?? So my chicken was absolutely dry and just battered with no flavor. The soups were bland and the only thing I can praise is the decent fried rice and portions they give. Unfortunately, I seem to be allergic to the oil used. Every time I consume some of the food, I'd end up with stomach issues. I don't have this issue with other restaurants or the ingredients and seasonings so it alludes me to think it's the cooking oil which I am having a reaction to. In town on business from Dallas, found this place on Yelp. It does not disappoint! I have a $20 meal allowance so took advantage by ordering several things to try. Mixed veggies in spicy garlic Pan fried wontons in spicy sauce Hot & sour soup Pros - everything is yummy with leftover-sized portions. The veggies are super fresh and chunky, cooked well and not mushy. The soup is chock-full of tofu, mushrooms, bean sprouts, green onion, I dunno what else. And the flavor is perfect. The sauce on the fried wontons is very addicting. Wish I'd have gotten an extra side of it. Cons - I ordered to go but wasn't given plastic ware. Thankfully the hotel had some. Steamed rice that came with the veggies is super sweet, tastes like butter and sugar rice. Wish I'd have specified fried rice. I asked for spicy sauce on the veggies and was disappointed in the spice level. So if you like a kick, be sure to tell him. This place stayed busy the entire time I was there - both walk-in orders and phone (probably online too). The guy at the front was friendly and fast, and knew several repeat customers' orders without them having to ask. This as authentic as you can get (orders are communicated to the kitchen in Mandarin(?) ) and bonus, he also knows Spanish because was taking orders in Spanish as well. I absolutely love Asian food and this location doesn't disappoint. Not only is the food always fresh and absolutely delicious, but the servings are huge and reasonably priced. And the fact that its really close to my job is just an added bonus. My favorite things to order are their Beef Lo Mein, Boneless Spare Ribs and their Egg Rolls. A large order of the Lo Mein gives me 4-5 decent sized servings and the boneless spare ribs lunch combo gives me about 3 servings as well. The fact that I can spend less than $10 on food and be able to spread it out over a few days is nice when I'm not in the mood to cook. With the current COVID-19 pandemic the restaurant is doing carryout so you're not able to sit there and eat, but you can call in or walk in to place an order. The food here is delicious! We usually order early in the day but today I went in at 7 PM. There were only two people working and cooking and the food was at its best! I ordered beef with broccoli, Singapore noodles with no meat, the vegetarian soup, and the chefs special tofu. I always ask for their homemade mustard. It's very hot but also very tasty. I love to spread it on my noodles with a duck sauce or make a dip with the mustard and duck sauce for an egg roll. Absolutely my favorite Chinese take out around Orlando! Be ready to eat when you go there as you gets tons of food no matter what you order! The price is definitely right....we pay around $20 for an order of General Chicken & Orange Chicken with Egg Drop Soup or Egg Roll on the side, as well as an order of Spring Rolls!
