I usually go to the Haggen over in Fairhaven so it is nice to know there is one on Meridian street. This is actually more convenient for me as I usually pass by this when driving from TJ to Costco. I finally stopped here to check it out the other day. There is free wifi here too. Yay! I discovered they carry more variety of Beecher's cheese here than the Haggen over in Fairhaven. So double yay! I bought my favorite smoked flagship cheese and the hatch Jack (a spicy cheese with pepper). You can also find toffee and chocolate from Gig Harbor Candy as well as Van Leeuwen ice cream from NYC. Staff is friendly and will ask if you need help in finding stuff. Plenty of parking at the lot out front. read more

I bought a chicken pesto sandwich on a crescent roll from Hagen. The first bite tasted a bit odd. I opened it and found 2 thin slices of chicken and pesto that was mostly mayonnaise. A tried a few more bites and that was enough. As the day continued, my stomach was already feeling off. By evening I was sick. Thanks for the horrible sandwich and the food poisoning. I don't mind paying higher prices for quality food. This place is a glorified Safeway Market, really. It's not the first time I've had an issue with this store. I suggest you fire whoever made the sandwich. How clean is the area where it was made? Are perishables stored properly or sitting out? Teach the next person making sandwiches how to make a proper pesto and put more than 2 see through slices of chicken. I paid $10 for the mistake of buying ready made food at Hagen. I shop here if I only need one or two items. It is close to home and saves me a trip to another supermarket. Their prices are too high for me to do regular grocery shopping here. The store is always spotless and well arranged. The produce is always fresh and excellent. Good deli and bakery. Staff is always friendly, personable and very helpful. My partner and I used to really love this store. It's a pleasure to shop here. Wide aisles, great produce. Easy parking, friendly staff. The Starbucks inside was recently remodeled and is lovely. Nice wine selection. However, recently we've been super shocked at their escalating prices. We get that inflation has taken a toll, but many things are now $2-3 dollars more for the exact same item at Freddie's which is also near us. Pantry essentials we buy like butter, eggs, and half + half are $7 here. I buy kefir 4-5x a month and it's $2.50 more for the same brand I buy at Freddie's. That's significantly more. What's even more disturbing to us, though, is the weird price deception strategies they employ, raising the price of a 4-pack of local Stemma beer to $22.99, for example, and then putting it on "SALE" for $16.99 when last month it was $15.99 all the time. I really question the need for these price tactics which sort of assumes on some level that we (your customers) are essentially stupid and don't know any better. By the restrooms, they have discount shelves where they also Inflate the prices before putting them 50% off, something they didn't used to do. What's happening here? Well, they are eroding our trust, and I don't think we're alone in our thinking. Maybe just be more honest and less tactic-y. Work on lowering the prices of a few essential staples and bring us back! This review is regarding the pharmacy. Arrived at 1315 to pick up a prescription. The cashier said they were about to go on lunch at 1330 and didn't have time to fill it before lunch. Advised to come back at 1445. There were 3 people in the pharmacy at the time. Was only one a pharmacist? Weak sauce! read more

This Haggen is a lovely neighborhood store, where we know all the cashiers and they always make sure to remind us of the coffee sale and the annual cheese sale. We've never had an issue with rude checkers, but being a smaller store, it can get extraordinarily busy at "rush hour" and before holidays. It's a smaller store, so the selection can be smaller than that at Barkley or Sehome. read more

Not shopping here anymore but occasionally hoped to shop here as a nearby quickstop. Hoped to make a quick dash in today and get some refrigerated pesto. Lo and Behold there was not a single tub of refrigerated pesto in the store. This is something I know they always carried (previously had shopped there for last 8 years). A standard stock item. They DID have some in jars that was priced so far over FM prices that I just decided to forgo it. Many many times they are out of stock on standard items. Once they were out of chicken breasts and it was NOT during the pandemic food shortages but far after all that was over. Poor purchasing and stocking. read more

Not some fancy full of its own self-importance flower shop but instead a place that really wants to be sure you take home with you a bouquet that is what you wanted and that reflects well on them and on you. I got two lovely bouquets here this afternoon, and was so pleased with the high-quality customer service, the beautiful flowers, and the overall experience. I know grocery store flower department doesn't sound like a thing you would want to visit, but this is worth coming to. Great service. Love all the cashiers. Nice variety of foods in the prepared foods/deli sections. A lot of local brands. I have to admit, I'm terribly addicted to their baked potato salad in the deli. Oh, my goodness, it's too good!!!! Their broccoli salad is delicious, too. Just a few drawbacks: They don't sell Chef Paul Prudhomme's Magic poultry seasoning. Last time I went, right before Thanksgiving, they didn't have any brazil nuts ... but maybe there's a shortage? I don't know. Seems strange not to have brazil nuts. And they turn the heat way up. I felt like I was in a sauna when I went in there about 10 p.m. last night. And when I mentioned it in front of two cashiers, one guy agreed with me. The other guy, who was wearing a short-sleeve shirt, said he hadn't noticed. So, I don't know. I just thought that was strange. Then again, I spent most of my life in California and South Florida, so I don't really understand how to deal with heaters and other, winter-time etiquette in Washington state ... It's always kept at a nice temperature in the summer. But now, in the winter, I take my jacket off as soon as I walk in there!!! read more

Gouged prices and poor selection. Charge way more for the same products you can find at most other retailers. Essentially a smaller footprint Safeway with worse prices and a local facade. I'm sick of this store. It probably helps their cause that they are the only large grocery retailer in such a large population footprint. Not to mention the only close-by competing viable grocery location (Birchwood former Albertson's) isn't allowed to be used by another retailer for that purpose. On the plus side the parking lot is never crowded and the checkout lines are short, probably cause most folks are wise enough to shop elsewhere. All that being said the employees are very friendly and the deli is solidly mediocre. read more

The liquor control board told me I was right, and they hassled me unnecessarily. If a store shorts you on an alcohol sale, they must refund your money. Just good enough. If I didn't live so close I'd take my shopping elsewhere. Generally expensive vs. the alternatives. Meat is generally good, but significantly more expensive than most everywhere else in town. The deli is really mediocre. I guess if you grew up in the 70's and like mayonnaise, miracle whip, and pasta salads for too much money you'd probably enjoy it. The prepared sandwiches are almost always a let down. Whether inedible hard chewy french bread wrapped around salty disgusting Salami, or soggy ciabatta with dried out mozzarella, they nearly always come up short. Plus they're not exactly cheap. Cold mediocre sandwich for $6 or a sit down lunch special of hot food with sides at any number of restaurants in town? Hot food wins every time. Hissho Sushi... Nightmare. It's about as far from actual sushi as you can get. Don't read the ingredients, it could be shocking. What is Sorbitol doing in sushi? How come you pay twice as much for half the calories? Why is there no rice vinegar? Sushi basics are simple. Hissho Sushi is not simple. It is all that is wrong with centrally distributed corporate food chains. Why would anyone in Bellingham want to eat expensive 'seafood' or rough approximations that come from a 46,000 sq. ft. warehouse in North Carolina? Beats me. read more

I love Haggen, especially their pharmacy. When I was pregnant the pharmacist took the time to go over my medication and how best to take them with other pregnancy symptoms. What is up with Haggen prices? $12.69 for 4 75 watt light bulbs? Are you kidding? They cost $5.99 at a lot of other places and online. And the butter I buy increased .25 from one week to the next and my yogurt--a local brand I like to support went up 1 dollar the same week. What gives? Some of the stuff is pricey....but you get what you pay for in quality, and it is nice to have a broad choice of premium goods; especially local products. read more

If you need to grab a quick item for lunch or a recipe this Haggen will work. It's small and convenient so you can quickly run in and out. Plenty of parking. As for a full shopping trip I would go elsewhere. The prices are pretty high for what's offered. read more

Every employee I encountered at the pharmacy had a flat affect. Don't let that fool you. They make things happen and helped get my prescription changed in a prompt and timely manner. This was the original Haggen's. My parents shopped there in the 60's. We've shopped there since the 70's as we live on that side of town. Once they built the other Bellingham Haggens the Meridian store started to go down hill. Once the Haggen Family sold and new owners took over, it really went down hill. The Deli is very limited and their salad's aren't fresh. The produce isn't any better. Many of the good name brands are gone. Selection is slim. They also don't check the expiration dates. I got salad dressing that was10 months past expiration. Today I was in there and went to but some special burger sauce and all 6 bottles exp. on Oct 11,2014. Today is the 29th. Their meat is hit and miss too. The top may look good but when you get it home, it's brown on the bottom. They had announced they were putting in a Oriental food Bar like the other stores have. They never did And their pharmacy. .........Went there for many,many years. They never remembered my name, and they were poor on following thru. The staff for the most part is rude. I switched to Rite Aid and they knew my name after 3 months and always followed thru. I'm excited for the new Safeway which will be here in December. Good-bye Haggen.
