Hits the spot with a mildly entertaining show at a moderate price.
Food: 3.5 Stars
The food was above average compared to most restaurants out there and maybe a little below a regular Hibachi restaurant. I started with Steamed Shrimp Shumai which was good on its own, but the sauce that came with it wasn't compatible with the dish in my opinion.
The main course for me was Steak and Shrimp with Fried Rice. The fried rice reminded me of Benihana with good solid flavors, however it was a little oily. The steak was rather bland and tasteless without the 2 dipping sauces provided by Hagane, but I must say they are better than most other Hibachi restaurants. The shrimp however was terrific, a little overcooked (is to be expected of any Hibachi restaurant), but it had a good fresh taste to it and it especially blended well with both the sauces.
Every dish was cooked to where they were supposed to be (except the shrimp which had been mildly overcooked). I had asked for medium rare for my steak and that is exactly what i received.
Drinks: 2 Stars (w/o liquor) 4 Stars (w/liquor)
Unfortunately I went to Hagane while they were renewing their liquor license so I didn't have the chance to try any alcoholic beverages while I was there. The drink menu looked solid enough with decent level prices. However do not ask for a mixed drink like cranberry juice and orange juice because they will charge you double. **They do tell you that you will be charged double, they won't sneak the charge on your bill** The Japanese soda had an interesting taste to it. It reminded me of bubblegum and a weaker version of 7-Up.
For non-alcoholic drinks I highly recommend their Iced-Tea. I don't know whether or not its homemade, but it was delicious and refreshing.
Service: 4.5 Stars
Service was about what you expect from a restaurant. The wait staff was nice, but for some reason I felt that something was off, even though I couldn't put my finger on it (maybe I was just hungry).
Ambiance: 5 Stars
When my group arrived at 8pm the place was deserted, so we wondered if it was worth being there however within 30-45 minutes the place was packed and a line for the Hibachi tables started forming. The restaurant had a nice feel to it, nothing exotic, it did what it needs to do. The Hibachi chefs know the basics of putting on a show, nothing fabulous like Benihana, but you will pay about $10-$20 less here than there. Expect the basics of making high flames, onion volcano's, and some other little tricks that will make you applaud. The chef was also helpful and generous with the portions of food at the table (especially when you sit at the corners).
Overall Rating: 3.5 Stars
I rounded up in my review because I believe it doesn't deserve to be knocked down to a 3. What sold me on this place is the prices. My bill came to $38 with tip and tax with an appetizer, combination platter and 2 drinks. Compared to other Hibachi restaurants this price is lower than average. While the show may not be necessarily as entertaining and extravagant, you get a solid meal at a good price.
Note: I recommend you do with a group no larger than 7 people because that is the max seating for 1 hibachi grill. So that is something to consider when you visit Hagane.
Note 2: A combination platter comes with Miso Soup (above average), Ginger Dressing Salad (average), 2 grilled jumbo shrimp (well above average).
